Tigers vs Rockies 8-6: Detroit extend strong start to MLB season

Express Tribune08-05-2025

The Detroit Tigers extended their strong start to the 2025 season with a commanding victory over the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday night.
Backed by a relentless offence and another sharp outing from Jackson Jobe, the Tigers cruised to a comfortable win in the first game of the series at Coors Field.
The final score underscored Detroit's recent dominance and Colorado's continued woes in a difficult season.
Detroit entered the game riding a 22-13 record and high on confidence, having won four of their previous five games — including a 13-1 blowout over the Angels.
Their offence, averaging 5.1 runs per game and powered by a team OPS of .755, struck early. Spencer Torkelson got the scoring started in the first inning, and Kerry Carpenter — who came into the game hitting .355 over his last 10 appearances — added to the lead with an RBI single.
By the third inning, the Tigers had established a commanding advantage, while the Rockies struggled to generate offence.
Despite a few flashes from Hunter Goodman and Brenton Doyle, Colorado failed to convert opportunities, continuing a season-long trend that sees them ranked last in the league in OPS (.620) and runs per game (3.12).
The game was also significant, as it marked Tigers' head coach A.J. Hinch's 900th managerial victory.
On the mound, rookie Chase Dollander faced a difficult task and couldn't hold back Detroit's hot bats. Though he had shown promise in his last outing against Atlanta, inconsistency returned as he gave up multiple runs early and never recovered.
Jobe, meanwhile, delivered another solid start for Detroit. The right-hander limited Colorado's chances, showcasing the poise that's defined his season so far.
With support from a disciplined defence and a potent offence, the Tigers were in control throughout.
Torkelson later added a solo homer, further cementing the result and lifting his season tally. Detroit's complete performance — at the plate, on the mound, and in the field — left little doubt about their status as a rising force in the league.
As the final innings closed, the Rockies were left searching for solutions to a 6-28 record that has them rooted to the bottom of the standings.
With the series set to continue, Casey Mize is expected to start the next game for Detroit as Colorado looks to salvage a result and find some momentum.

Dodgers vs Mets 7-5: Teoscar Hernandez clutch in 13th-inning RBI double

Teoscar Hernández delivered the decisive blow with an RBI double in the 13th inning as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the New York Mets 7–5 in a chaotic rematch of the 2024 National League Championship Series at a rain-soaked Citi Field. The game began on Friday night and stretched into early Saturday morning, with the Mets staging a dramatic comeback to tie the game 5–5 in the bottom of the ninth, only to fall short in extras. Hernández's double brought home automatic runner Will Smith before he advanced to third and later scored on Andy Pages' sacrifice fly, giving Los Angeles a two-run cushion. Rain halted play for 98 minutes in the third inning, delaying Clayton Kershaw's second start of the season. Despite the interruption, the Dodgers outlasted the Mets in a game that lasted over four hours, excluding the rain stoppage. Luis García secured the win with 2⅓ hitless innings in relief, celebrating on the mound after Tommy Edman's sliding catch sealed the victory at 12:56 a.m. A fireworks display followed, as promised, for the remaining fans among the 40,449 who had braved the late finish. Earlier, the Mets rallied from a 5–2 deficit. Jeff McNeil drove in two runs with a triple, and Tyrone Taylor tied the game with an RBI single in the ninth off Dodgers closer Tanner Scott, who was handed his fourth blown save of the season. The Mets squandered multiple opportunities across five scoreless extra innings, stranding the potential winning run at third base in both the ninth and 11th innings. Dodgers pitchers held firm, cycling through arms before breaking through against Huascar Brazobán, the ninth Mets pitcher of the night. Brett Baty homered for New York, while Pete Alonso was credited with a rare sacrifice fly following an obstruction call at third base. For Los Angeles, Will Smith, Max Muncy, and Andy Pages all contributed RBI singles. The Dodgers improved to 20–5 at Citi Field since 2017, including postseason games, continuing their recent dominance over the Mets. Up Next: Tony Gonsolin (2–0, 4.05 ERA) starts for the Dodgers on Saturday against Mets left-hander David Peterson (2–2, 2.86 ERA).

BCB gets 'green signal' for Pak tour

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has received a nod from the government for the upcoming white-ball tour of Pakistan, international media reported on Thursday. According to a report, the cricket board has been directed to go ahead with the tour, comprising five T20Is, but still awaits the official letter, which is expected to be dispatched soon. "We have got the green signal (from the government) though we are yet to receive the official letter which we are expecting sooner than latter but as far as I know government have taken the decision in principle that they will let us visit Pakistan for the upcoming tour," a BCB official told an international sports website. "After getting the official letter from the government we will start talking with our players as we learnt that some of them are reluctant to travel citing security reason. One thing we can assure is that we won't push anyone." Notably, the BCB had earlier said that it was awaiting the clearance from the government and would then discuss with the players before travelling to Pakistan. The Tigers are currently on a brief tour of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where they will play two T20Is on May 17 and 19. Bangladesh were then supposed to tour Pakistan for a five-match T20I series, originally scheduled to commence on May 25 in Faisalabad, but the suspension of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10 means that the two cricket boards have to make tweaks to the schedule. As a result, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) sent a revised proposed itinerary to the BCB on May 13. According to which, Faisalabad will host the first three T20Is on May 27, 29 and June 1, while the remaining two matches will be played in Lahore on June 3 and 5.

Dodgers vs Diamondbacks 3-5: Yoshinobu Yamamoto has a stinker

Yoshinobu Yamamoto's Cy Young campaign hit its first real speed bump Thursday night as the Arizona Diamondbacks took advantage of the Dodgers' ace in a 5–3 win at Chase Field to open their four-game series. 'We've seemed to bring out the best in them,' Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said earlier in the day — and that's exactly what happened. Coming off his sharpest outing of the year, Yamamoto struggled with command and timing, pitching on five days' rest for the first time this season. Arizona made him pay. Gabriel Moreno launched his first home run of the season — a grand slam in the fourth — after Yamamoto loaded the bases with no outs. Ketel Marte, just back from a hamstring injury, followed with a solo shot in the fifth. In just five innings, Yamamoto allowed six hits and five earned runs, ballooning his ERA from 0.90 to 1.80 and marking his shortest and roughest outing so far. On the other side, Diamondbacks starter Brandon Pfaadt was composed and effective. He held the Dodgers to four hits through six-plus innings, escaping key jams in the first and sixth. The Dodgers only got going in the eighth, scratching out two runs with RBI hits from Max Muncy and Andy Pages, but a sharp double play turned by Marte stopped the rally cold. Shohei Ohtani added a solo home run in the ninth to keep things interesting, but Kevin Ginkel shut the door to seal the win. The Dodgers will look to bounce back Friday after their top arm took an unexpected hit — and the Diamondbacks showed they still have plenty of firepower.
