John Wick and four other movies to watch if you like Nobody 2

John Wick and four other movies to watch if you like Nobody 2

Combining violence and comedy isn't new, exactly, but it's certainly a genre that has been tried and tested inside Hollywood. Nobody and its sequel, Nobody 2, are two brilliant examples of the way that genre has continued to evolve and change, even as Hollywood has evolved right alongside it.
If you liked Nobody 2, the sequel to Bob Odenkirk's surprising action comedy, then we've got five other movies that are worth checking out. These movies all mix comedy and violence to interesting effect, although some lean heavier into one element or the other.
Novocaine (2025)
Jack Quaid has proven to be a uniquely likable screen presence, and Novocaine is the perfect showcase for what he's so good at. Whereas Nobody is about a regular guy who turns out to have some surprising fighting skills, Novocaine is about a guy with very few fighting skills, but has the advantage of not being able to feel pain. When the girl of his dreams is kidnapped, he decides to use that skill to his advantage to take on the criminals who took her. Light on its feet, wildly violent, and featuring a remarkably game Quaid performance, Novocaine is the kind of movie we should want six of every year.
You can watch Novocaine on Paramount+.
The Instigators (2024)
In part because it was released straight to Apple TV+, The Instigators didn't the recognition it probably deserved. Featuring an all-star cast that is headlined by Matt Damon and Casey Affleck, the film follows two unlikely allies, one a desperate father and the other a thief, who join forces to pull off a heist for money that both of them need. When things go wrong, though, they have to try to avoid capture. While it has a sense of real stakes, The Instigators is mostly light entertainment, the kind of movie that you'll mostly find yourself delighted by as you breeze through it.
You can watch The Instigators on Apple TV+.
Hit Man (2023)
One of the great undersung movies of 2023, Hit Man tells the story of a philosophy professor who moonlights as a fake hit man for the New Orleans Police Department. When he meets a woman who wants a hit man to kill her husband, he begins to form a bond with her that extends well beyond his persona. Anchored by the remarkable chemistry between Glen Powell and Adria Arjona, Hit Man is a lightly philosophical movie that is a heck of a lot of fun. While it has its moments of violence, the movie is mostly a romantic comedy, and a delightful one at that.
You can watch Hit Man on Netflix.
John Wick (2014)
The movie that Nobody is most directly indebted to, the original John Wick tells the story of a retired assassin who finds himself coming out of retirement after his dog is killed. This movie, which launched an entire franchise, is smaller than you might remember, but features some of the most remarkable, and remarkably violent action sequences in recent memory. Just as crucial, though, is Keanu Reeves' central performance, which is both steely and more vulnerable than you might remember.
You can watch John Wick on Hulu.
Spy (2015)
Perhaps the best comedy that Melissa McCarthy ever made, Spy tells the story of a CIA analyst who has spent her entire career behind her desk. When the agent she supports is assassinated, though, she wrangles her way into the field for the very first time, and a wide array of hilarity ensues. Spy is an out-and-out comedy, but it's an exceptionally good one, and maybe the fullest example of her immense comedic talent. Just as great, though, is Jason Statham playing essentially a parody of the characters he normally plays, and a damn good one at that.
You can watch Spy on Hulu.

Box Office: ‘Weapons' Slays ‘Nobody 2' With $25M as Sydney Sweeney's ‘Americana' Bombs at $500K

Bob Odenkirk's modestly budgeted sequel Nobody 2 is having to settle for a third-place finish in its domestic box office debut as Zach Cregger's Weapons continues to fire on all cylinders and stay atop the chart in its sophomore outing, followed by Disney's family comedy Freakier Friday. Nobody 2, about a seemingly average suburban dad who leads a double life as a stealth operative, is on course to open on the lower end of expectations with $9.3 million from 3,260 locations after receiving a B+ CinemaScore from audiences (its audience ranking on Rotten Tomatoes is more promising at 89 percent). Its early global total is $14.2 million. More from The Hollywood Reporter Sydney Sweeney Just Had the Biggest Controversy of Her Career. Now What? Black Bear Names Lionsgate Vet David Spitz Head of U.S. Theatrical Distribution Sharon Stone Has a "Moral Code" When Playing Bad Guys: "Villains Really F*** Up Your Life" The first Nobody opened amid the pandemic to $6.8 million on its way to grossing a pleasing $68 million domestically. The sequel cost a modest $25 million to make before marketing, so no one at Universal is losing sleep, since it is sure to make up ground when hitting premium VOD as early as three weeks from now (the studio has perfected the art of PVOD). From New Line and Warner Bros., Weapons had no trouble staying No. 1 with $25 million from 3,450 locations in its sophomore outing after dropping a scant 43 percent drop. That's a rare feat for a horror film, and cements the film's status as a water-cooler sensation. Overseas, it dropped 33 percent to $18.4 million for an early worldwide total of $148.8 million in yet another win for Warners, which paid $38 million for rights to the project. The female-skewing Freakier Friday, reteaming Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, is likewise grinning in its sophomore outing with an estimated haul $14.5 million from 3,975 cinemas for a worldwide cume of $86.3 million against a budget under $45 million. The body-swap comedy fell 50 percent domestically. Nobody 2 isn't the weekend's only new player, but is by far doing the best of the bunch. Spike Lee's prestige pic Highest 2 Lowest, which reunites him for the first time in 18 years with Denzel Washington, is opening in select theaters before debuting relatively quickly on Apple TV+ in early September. While Apple is making a major push into theatrical — 51: The Movie is one of the summer's biggest blockbusters and is getting a traditional release in cinemas — Highest 2 Lowest doesn't appear to be part of that strategy. A24, which partnered with Apple on Lee's latest movie, isn't even reporting grosses so far, but those with visibility into numbers being reported by some theaters suggest Highest 2 Lowest is doing tepid business for a movie with such a high-profile director and cast, not to mention a splashy world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. The Lionsgate-distributed Americana — starring Sydney Sweeney opposite Paul Walter Hauser and Halsey — is bombing in its nationwide debut in 1,123 theaters. The pic opened to an estimated $500,000 for a sixteenth-place finish. The crime-heist movie, which has been well received by critics, has taken more than two years to arrive on the big screen after first premiering at SXSW in 2023. Lionsgate insists the film is part of a multi-platform strategy, including premium VOD, and that it is no way a disappointment, financial or otherwise. Americana opens in the wake of a media firestorm engulfing Sweeney after American Eagle dropped its 'Sydney Has Great Jeans' campaign July 23. Almost overnight, some TikTok users took offense to a campaign clip that features Sweeney saying, 'Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color. My jeans are blue.' They claimed the comments promote eugenics since Sweeney is white, blond-haired and blue-eyed. While countless users dismissed such theories as nonsense, the debate went viral. Even President Donald Trump weighed in after The Guardian reported that Sweeney registered as a Republican in Florida prior to the 2024 election. More to come. Crafted by Weta Workshop, the towering piece is loaded with intricate sculpting and a meticulous paint finish that captures every bit of its on-screen intimidation. Alongside it, Savage also examines a hero top hat worn in Gangs of New York and an armored helmet created by Terry English for Alien 3 .
