A brave Melburnian has overpowered a knife-wielding invader who broke into his elderly father's home in the city's west overnight, leaving the son with serious injuries.
The attacker, who is yet to be formally identified by police, forcibly entered a home on Ridley Street in Albion at about 8.10pm on Sunday evening brandishing a knife.
The 84-year-old man who lived at the property was first alerted to the break-in when he heard his dog barking.
When the elderly homeowner went to investigate the noise he was approached by a man armed with a knife, who told him to hand over his car keys before then punching him in the face when he refused.
The man's 54-year-old son who lives next door overheard the altercation and ran to help his father.
The son was stabbed multiple times before eventually holding him down until police arrived.
Both the resident and the intruder, aged in his 40s, were rushed to Royal Melbourne Hospital.
Police said the son received serious injuries to his back during the violent exchange.
The attacker has serious upper body injuries and is fighting for life.
He remains under police guard.
The elderly resident was treated at the scene for minor upper body injuries and was taken to Sunshine Hospital.
Police confirmed he was in a stable condition.
An investigation into the incident is underway.
CCTV footage obtained from a neighbouring house shows police arriving at the property, with one officer loudly shouting: 'Stop it let him go."
'Let him go? He's a f***ing animal,' another voice says off camera, according to The Herald Sun.
Neighbour Lee Ly, who made the triple zero call, said she heard loud screaming coming from the house, as well as the words "killing me".
'I heard the words 'killing me' and just called Triple-0 straight away,' Mr Ly told the Herald Sun.
The horror attack comes amid a mounting push for the state government to give Victorians more powers to fight against intruders amid a rapid increase in home invasions statewide.
Authorities are urging anyone will information into the incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
