"Need To Seize Small Moments During Big Games": Mithali Raj On India Women For ODI World Cup

NDTV2 days ago
Former captain Mithali Raj feels India can end their long-standing trophy drought if they seize key moments and swing the momentum in their favour during big games at the upcoming Women's ODI World Cup. Hosts India will enter next month's World Cup as tournament favourites alongside Australia and England. The Harmanpreet Kaur-led 'Women in Blue' will be chasing their maiden world title, having fallen short twice in the finals in the 50-over format. "I think (India) needs to seize those small moments during the big games," Raj told ICC Digital.
"That's where the balance (is) of the teams which are in contention. They try and use more of those moments and try to shift the momentum to their side and India need to seize those moments," she added.
Raj, who led India to the World Cup finals in 2005 and 2017, feels a title triumph would have a transformative impact on the women's game in the country.
"I think it would be huge. I mean, that is something that all the players, whoever picks up the bat, whoever wants to represent the country would want to win the World Cup because so far India hasn't," she said.
"Yes, we've come close twice, but we haven't got our hands on the Cup. It would be great to win a World Cup at home because that's a very different stage altogether...and giving all of us an opportunity to see that." India's recent white-ball tour of England saw youngsters Kranti Goud and Shree Charani make their mark, with the team clinching both the T20I and ODI series.
Raj was particularly impressed by 22-year-old pace sensation Goud.
"I was quite impressed with Kranti Goud in England with her raw talent," Raj noted.
"She has played WPL (Women's Premier League) but she does not really have that much experience.
"But the grit that she gets as a seamer trying to keep pegging in and getting wickets (is impressive) and she picked up a six-wicket haul (in England) as well so I would love to see her in the World Cup playing at home." The Women's World Cup begins on September 30, with India opening their campaign against co-hosts Sri Lanka.

Short run to single ball rule: BCCI announces key domestic rule changes

Traditionally, when batters intentionally run short to retain strike, particularly in T20 formats, the penalty has included disallowing the run, awarding five penalty runs to the fielding side, and a potential post-match hearing with the referee. The updated rule takes this further. According to the new clause, if a deliberate short run is identified, the captain of the fielding team will choose which of the two batters remains on strike for the following delivery. This rule aims to prevent manipulation of strike and curb unfair advantage. However, if a batter aborts a run mid-way without intent to deceive or gain advantage, the umpires may use discretion and avoid penalization. Detailed Short Run Rule (Clause 18.5.2): Another key update concerns batters retiring mid-innings. As per the revised regulation, if a batter retires for any reason outside of injury or external interruption, he will be immediately deemed 'Retired–out'. Crucially, such a player cannot return to bat, even with the opposing captain's permission. This rule is now applicable across all formats of domestic cricket. Single Ball Rule in 50-Over Games The BCCI has also aligned with the ICC's recent ODI rule tweak to use only one ball after 34 overs. This change, intended to reintroduce reverse swing into the game, will be implemented in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Teams will use two new balls from each end for the first 34 overs. After that, one ball will be chosen for the remaining overs, while the other will be added to the pool of replacement balls.

MS Dhoni, Gautam Gambhir Spotted Together At High-Profile Wedding Ceremony. Picture Is Viral On Internet

Three stalwarts of Indian cricket - MS Dhoni, Gautam Gambhir and Rohit Sharma - have reunited in unprecedented circumstances. In fact, Dhoni and Gambhir were even spotted together, pictured in conversation during the event. Several other current and former Indian cricketers were also present in the event, such as Harbhajan Singh, Irfan Pathan, Parthiv Patel and Tilak Varma. Pictures from the wedding were shared on social media, and the frame featuring Dhoni and Gambhir together has gone viral. Dhoni attended the event alongside his wife Sakshi, and the two were also pictured together at the wedding. Dhoni's only involvement in cricket comes in the form of playing the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Dhoni did not experience a great IPL 2025 campaign, as CSK finished rock-bottom for the first time in its history. Dhoni took over captaincy of the franchise from the injured Ruturaj Gaikwad mid-season. There is still no clarity whether Dhoni will play IPL 2026, with the 44-year-old stressing that it depends on his fitness. Meanwhile, Gambhir has recently completed one year at the helm of Team India, during which he has led the team to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 title. Gambhir will now shift his focus to the Asia Cup 2025, which comes after a 2-2 away Test series draw against England.

Maxwell levels Warners elusive feat after stellar show, goes past Suryakumar in T20I six-hitting list

Cairns [Australia], August 16 (ANI): Australia's seasoned all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, who delivered a Player of the Match performance in the third T20I against South Africa, levelled former opener David Warner's elusive feat and broke India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav's six-hitting record on Saturday. While Maxwell delivered a spectacle with his sheer power-hitting, his magic in the outfield went under the radar. With a stellar piece of fielding, Maxwell completed the priceless catch of Dewald Brevis and went level with his former teammate Warner's record. His eye-catching effort marked his 62nd outfield catch for Australia, the joint-highest for the nation alongside Warner. For his record-shattering catch, Maxwell had to work hard and put in the hard yards to end Brevis' fireworks. The young Proteas batter was tormenting the hosts in their backyard by unleashing a barrage of boundaries. After Brevis dazzled with a rollicking 22-ball fifty, Nathan Ellis took the mantle of bringing his exploits to an end. In the 12th over, Ellis caught him off-guard with a short-length delivery, bereft of pace. He tried to pull the ball away but found a sprinting Maxwell, who pouched the ball with both hands to send Brevis back on 53(26), making the entire process look easy. Maxwell's job wasn't done yet. In pursuit of a 174-run target, Australia were tottering at 122/6, and a Maxwell special became the need of the hour. From ball one, Maxwell looked destined to deliver and flaunted his potential to clear the delivery when Australia desperately needed it. During his stellar outing with the bat, he hammered two maximums and went past India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav in the list of most sixes in T20Is. Maxwell now boasts 148 sixes, two more than Suyrakumar's tally. Overall, he is in the sixth spot behind Rohit Sharma (205), Martin Guptill (173), Muhammad Waseem (168), Jos Buttler (160) and Nicholas Pooran (149). He reduced the equation to run-a-ball before the 18th over, but was forced to watch a catastrophe in the penultimate over. While standing helpless at the non-striker's end, as Corbin Bosch executed a maiden double-wicket over, bringing down the equation to 10 required from six. Maxwell sprinted for a double and then punched the ball away for a four. Lungi Ngidi struck back with back-to-back dot balls, but Maxwell reverse scooped the ball to clear the short third fielder and seal a 2-1 series win for Australia. As the seasoned all-rounder returned unbeaten with 62 from 36, South Africa was overwhelmed by their seventh T20I series defeat in the last 10. Maxwell's run-fest also ensured that Australia maintained its unbeaten streak in men's internationals in Cairns and extended it to eight. (ANI)
