Why Kamal Hassan's kiss unsettled fans

Economic Times6 days ago
Agencies There's a moment in Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam and starring Kamal Haasan, that has sparked not admiration but alarm, at least on social media. Kamal strides onscreen with his signature swagger, lean frame, and that unmissable, gravelly voice that has weathered both time and trend. And lit the match. The 70-year-old legend, playing a gun-slinging rebel, locks lips with a much younger heroine playing his wife. And he has a concubine in the story, claimed with all the quiet entitlement of a man who knows he's still the alpha in the room.
The internet did what it does best: served up memes, mockery and moralising. At the centre of it all lies the question no one can stop asking: what is it about old men and their eternal onscreen virility? To his credit, Kamal leans into the absurdity. In a cheeky nod to cinematic history, his character whispers to Trisha, 'Madam, I am your only Adam', a throwback to Amitabh Bachchan's infamous flirtation with Aishwarya Rai in Bunty Aur Babli (2005). Point made. But the line also invites an uncomfortable chuckle. Is geriatric testosterone believable? Aspirational? Or just absurd?
To understand the optics of Thug Life, it helps to zoom out. The age gap between heroes and heroines is not new-neither in Indian cinema nor in Hollywood. Sean Connery kissed Catherine Zeta-Jones in Entrapment at 68. Harrison Ford, Clint Eastwood, Liam Neeson and Tom Cruise have all romanced much younger women while dodging bullets, bombs and biological reality. In India, the older-hero-younger-heroine trope is practically a genre. Rajinikanth (73) was paired with Nayanthara (39) in Darbar. Chiranjeevi, Nagarjuna, even the ageless Shah Rukh Khan-name a senior male star and you'll find him romancing someone two to three decades younger.
So why is Kamal's kiss or his concubine in Thug Life triggering? It's not really about the kiss. It's about male mythology. In South Indian cinema, especially, the hero is more than a character. He's a force-a heady mix of power, invincibility and simmering sexuality. Age? Just a minor inconvenience. Testosterone? An eternal supply. On screen, our heroes remain lithe, lascivious and legacy-lubricated. The older male lead isn't portrayed as someone fighting against age but as someone untouched by it. Welcome to Hormonal Replacement Theatre. But here's where Thug Life gets interesting. Kamal doesn't mask the years. The film acknowledges his age, the scars, the complex power dynamics of keeping a concubine. It attempts to both flaunt and interrogate male privilege. And yet, it walks a tightrope- trying to be woke while indulging in the very fantasy it critiques. The niggle is real.So again, why does Kamal get trolled?Perhaps because Kamal, unlike many of his peers, doesn't hide behind stylised heroism. He has, throughout his career, chosen complexity over comfort: playing a grandfather in his 30s (Nayakan), a wrinkled freedom fighter with prosthetics (Indian), a dwarf in Apoorva Sahodarargal, an aged failed classical artist in Sagara Sangamam. In Thug Life, he owns his aging virility, complete with kiss, concubine and charisma. It's not fantasy-it's provocation. And maybe that's why it stings. When George Clooney kisses on screen, it's 'seasoned charm'. When Kamal does it, it's 'creepy'. What's being policed isn't just age-but race, region and who's allowed to age with desire. The real dissonance, though, lies in the arc. We're happy to suspend disbelief for flying cars and bullet-ridden heroes who walk away from explosions. But one kiss between a vintage rebel and a young heroine? Suddenly, we're clutching pearls.Meanwhile, the leading ladies remain stubbornly youthful. The double standard is glaring. While male stars age like whisky, women are discarded like soda gone flat. Actresses over 40 struggle to get leading romantic roles, let alone action ones. It's not just sexist, it's systemic. We equate masculinity with eternal potency and femininity with a ticking clock. As Kamal kisses and quips his way through Thug Life, the audience will watch some in admiration, some in mockery, but all in curiosity. Maybe what we need isn't less testosterone on screen, but a little more honesty about what it costs to keep the myth alive. (Disclaimer: The opinions expressed in this column are that of the writer. Vikrant Massey And Vidhu Vinod Chopra Revisit The Struggles Of 12th Fail In Zero Se Restart

Vidhu Vinod Chopra's Zero Se Restart, a powerful behind-the-scenes documentary on the making of 12th Fail, is now streaming globally on Prime Video. In a rare and riveting behind-the-scenes revelation, Prime Video has announced the global premiere of Zero Se Restart—a documentary that intimately captures the making of filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra's critically acclaimed film 12th Fail. Now streaming in India and across 200+ countries and territories, the 85-minute documentary offers a raw, emotional, and surprisingly entertaining look at the creative chaos, persistence, and passion that went into shaping one of Indian cinema's most inspiring stories. Edited and directed by Jaskunwar Singh Kohli and produced under the Vinod Chopra Films banner, Zero Se Restart is more than a behind-the-scenes featurette—it's a full-fledged emotional journey into the heart of storytelling. Filmed over three years and distilled from over 18,000 minutes of footage, the documentary follows Chopra and his crew through every step of making 12th Fail—from script rewrites and unpredictable shoots to the moments of doubt, clarity, and sheer creative grit. 'Zero Se Restart may initially seem like a behind-the-scenes documentary—and it certainly is. But when viewed, I hope a more powerful story emerges," said Chopra. 'I had little idea how to film 12th Fail when I started—and yet, here it is. A celebration of courage embedded in all artistic processes. Zero Se Restart is a perfect example that grit, grace and growth all come when you allow yourself to restart." Kohli, who spent three formative years working alongside Chopra, adds, 'For any aspiring filmmakers out there, Zero Se Restart is a treat! It's a one-stop destination to learn from the hilarious and brilliant VVC himself. This wasn't a scripted or planned project—we just pulled out the most powerful 85 minutes from 18,850 minutes of footage. That's only 0.0045% of it!" Also featured in the documentary is actor Vikrant Massey, who played the lead in 12th Fail and reflects on the intensity of the experience: 'Zero Se Restart brought back the fear, the fire, and the faith. We shot in unpredictable locations, chasing moments with no safety net. Watching Mr. Chopra lead a young crew—armed with endless rewrites and no takers for the story at first—was truly inspiring. I'm grateful to Prime Video for taking this journey to audiences across the world." At its core, Zero Se Restart is not just about making a film. It's about perseverance, vulnerability, and starting from scratch with nothing but a dream and a vision. Whether you're a filmmaker, a cinephile, or someone seeking a dose of creative courage, this documentary delivers a potent reminder: that greatness often begins at zero. In this article, we will learn a little more about her love story, everything from their first meet to a grand wedding. Where did Priyamani and Mustafa Raj first meet? Well, flashback to one of the IPL matches in Bengaluru where Priyamani was present since she was the brand ambassador of one of the playing teams. She crossed paths with Mustafa Raj during an official meeting, who was in fact the event manager for the tournament that evening. While their first meet was more formal, sparks began to fly gradually when the two happened to cross paths again in Kerala, this time in a more casual setting. They were introduced, chatted, and over time became quite close friends. Priyamani and Mustafa stayed connected for four more years after this, during which romantic feelings developed and they fell head over heels in love with one another. Mustafa Raj proposed to Priyamani on national television Unlike other couples who prefer to keep their relationship under wraps, things were totally opposite for Priyamani and Mustafa. The duo continued to make joint appearances, leaving everyone buzzing with gossip about their growing closeness. In the meantime, some fans even began unearthing the viral pictures of the two from the IPL days, fuelling more buzz around a possible marriage between them soon enough. And so it did. Mustafa Raj ended up making one of his most epic moves in their relationship when he proposed to Priyamani on national television. Priyamani and Mustafa Raj's happy union was met with a small roadblock when the latter's ex-wife Ayesha claimed that she was still married to him, and thus the actress' wedding was invalid. Ayesha went on to claim that she and Mustafa were never divorced and that she was still his legal wife. However, the latter soon enough put out a statement countering the accusations. Mustafa mentioned that he had been living separately since 2010 and that his divorce from his first wife was formalised in 2013 itself.
