Humidity coming to the boil for hot-looking Vintage Stakes

Andrew Balding's son of Ulysses excelled from the front when winning the Chesham Stakes and although the form of that race has taken the odd knock since, connections are hopeful they have identified the perfect Group Two spot for the exciting youngster to cement his position near the top of the juvenile ranks.
'I loved the way he did it at Ascot and he was just lolloping along and James (Doyle) felt if someone had come to him he would have picked up and gone again,' said Richard Brown, racing adviser for owners Wathnan Racing.

'The form has taken a few whacks which would make you nervous, but he did it in great style at Ascot and it makes you excited to seeing him go again.
'He's drawn 10 which might be a bit wider than ideal, but hopefully he can get out and get striding.
'I'm sure we'll try to go forward with him, but it's not like he has to make the running and he's a really relaxed horse who has a very big stride and I think he will be fine.'
Also arriving with a 100 per cent record from two starts is Eve Johnson Houghton's Zavateri, who renews July Stakes rivalry with Ed Walker's Do Or Do Not having fought out the finish at Newmarket last month.
Both colts are stepping up in trip here, something Johnson Houghton believes will bring improvement from Zavateri.

'He's been in very good form since Newmarket and won the July Stakes impressively,' said Johnson Houghton.
'I know he's got a 3lb penalty now, but we think that won't be a problem to him and we've always thought he wanted further so this was the obvious next step for him.'
Aidan O'Brien has won this three times in the past, with Highland Reel his most notable graduate, and this time he relies on Dorset, who has caught the eye both in defeat on debut and when returned to the Curragh to open his account next time.
O'Brien said: 'We think he's come forward from the last day and it will be interesting to see.'
Dorset is joined from Ireland in the line-up by Joseph O'Brien's Coventry Stakes fourth Andab, who has not only had the misfortune of bumping into an on-song Gstaad but also Albert Einstein since a clear-cut winner on debut.

David Menuisier's Goodwood Galaxy, Richard Hannon's Gharma Sutra and Hugo Palmer's Laureate Crown have all raced once, won once and step up in grade, with the latter given the chance to emulate subsequent Classic hero Galileo Gold who won this for Palmer 10 year's ago.
Charlie Johnston's Vincenzo Peruggia showed marked improvement when off the mark at the second time of asking, while John and Thady Gosden's Haydock winner Morris Dancer.

Super-sized padel warehouse causes planning row

A planning row has broken out over a super-sized padel centre that locals fear will create a 'tremendous noise'. A warehouse unit surrounded by residential streets in Christchurch in Dorset has been earmarked for the giant venue for one of the fastest-growing sports in the UK. But neighbours claim the centre would cause huge traffic problems and noise pollution for those living in the area. Padel is a cross between tennis and squash which has grown in popularity in recent years, with celebrities including Annabel Croft and Michael McIntyre among its fans. Unlike in tennis, a padel racket is solid with no strings and is thicker – meaning it makes a very loud noise when striking the ball. As a result, padel has also gained a reputation as a particularly noisy and disruptive sport. Some 25 people have objected since the plans were submitted by company Advantage Padel to the local council. The new centre will have nine full-size courts, as well as four singles courts, which would mean up to 44 people could play at the same time. It would be open from 7am to 10pm, seven days a week, which residents say would give 'no respite' to anyone affected by the business. Mark Anderson said: 'Padel tennis is very loud and multiple courts being used all times of day and evening will be very disruptive. I feel that this facility will add a lot of noise in the area.' Julia Gladstone said: 'This facility will result in a huge increase in the volume of traffic entering and exiting a small complex of business units. 'The centre will be open from early morning to late evening and will create a high level of noise which will effect local residents and have a negative impact on their use of the garden for relaxation. 'The increase in both noise and air pollution that will be caused by the introduction of such a large facility cannot be ignored.' Concerns were also raised that the new centre would push out a much smaller padel business just 350 yards away. The PicklePad, the UK's first dedicated pickleball and padel indoor centre, opened in January just around the corner from where Advantage Padel want to put its new centre. Padel has the same scoring system as tennis, but different rules, strokes and techniques. It was invented in Mexico in the 1960s, but soared in popularity during the Covid pandemic as it could be played outside and did not involve physical contact. By 2023 there were more than 25 million active players across 90 countries. In the UK, the Lawn Tennis Association said the number of courts had increased from 50 in 2019 to 350, and it aims to have 1,000 courts by the end of next year.

Jel Pepper among strong British contingent in Ballyhane Stakes

An impressive winner on his Goodwood debut in early June, Paul and Oliver Cole's charge then finished a promising third behind Zavateri in Newmarket's Group Two July Stakes. The winner gave that form a significant boost by following up in the Vintage Stakes at Goodwood on Tuesday and connections of Jel Pepper are expecting a bold showing from their charge in Monday's €200,000 feature in County Kildare. 'Jel Pepper is a good horse who ran very well in the July Stakes and we have missed Goodwood with him to go to Naas,' said Oliver Cole. 'It is great prize money and I believe the ground will be on the easy side of good which will play to his strengths as he likes a bit of a cut in the ground. 'It is quite daunting coming to Ireland because there are so many good horses but these races are fantastic and it is brilliant to have a horse good enough to take part.' Jel Pepper is one of five British-trained contenders along with Richard Fahey's Cosmic Clarets, the George Scott-trained Front Line Fury and Kevin Ryan's pair of Tropical Dreamer and There's A Chance. Scott's contender missed out on a hat-trick when denied by a head at Ascot last time, but the Newmarket handler has plenty of belief in his solid operator ahead of this raiding mission. He said: 'He's a really dependable two-year-old who just turns up runs his race and always seems to be improving. 'I'm really pleased with him and he's taken another step forward since Ascot where he was very much a sitting duck. 'We think we are well drawn but you never quite know and I guess it will depend on where the pace and quality in the race is. I think he will go and run his usual solid race and will be there and thereabouts at the finish. 'He arguably has to come forward again from what he's shown but he's a tough horse and really cool and I'm very fond of him.' The home team is headed by Joseph O'Brien's Prix Robert Papin winner Green Sense.
