Japanese Mountaineer Dies Of Hypothermia On Peru's Tallest Mountain Peak

NDTV27-06-2025
A mountaineer from Japan died and another was rescued during a trek on Peru's tallest mountain, authorities said Thursday.
Chiaki Inada, 40, and Saki Terada, 36, became trapped Monday due to fog and bad weather on the mountain called Huascaran at an elevation of more than 21,000 feet (6,400 meters).
They were located by rescuers thanks to a GPS signal sent via a device in their possession, but not before Inada died from hypothermia, authorities said.
"We have rescued the Japanese citizen who was alive in order to deliver medical attention. Tomorrow we will transfer the body" of the second climber, General Antonio Loreno, the head of the police for the Ancash region, told TV Peru.
The pair arrived from Japan two weeks earlier and climbed the mountain without a guide.
Standing over 22,000 feet (6,700 meters) tall, Huascaran in the Cordillera Blanca mountain range draws climbers from around the world.
On Sunday, the bodies of three climbers who had been missing for more than 20 days in the same region were found after they were buried by an avalanche, authorities said.
And last July, the body of US mountaineer William Stampfl, who disappeared during an avalanche in 2002 while climbing Huascaran, was found mummified.

Bomb threat targets U.S. Embassy in Seoul during South Korean Liberation Day celebrations

On Korea's Liberation Day, August 15, the US Embassy in Seoul notified the Seoul Metropolitan Police of a possible bomb threat. Authorities confirmed that the Embassy received an email about 5 a.m. KST alleging that "a highly-explosive bomb has been installed in a public facility frequented by numerous visitors." The alert spurred immediate cooperation between the Embassy and local law enforcement to analyze the situation and protect the public. Police investigations indicate that the email was sent under the name of Japanese lawyer Takahiro Karasawa. This name has appeared repeatedly in recent fake bomb threats across South Korea. Reports suggest that in 2023, members of an online political community exploited the name, associating it with a fictitious cult leader and issuing hoax terror threats to public institutions. A spokesperson for the Seoul police said according to AllKpop, "We are examining this case in connection with previous threats that used the same name and similar phrasing." So far, no explosives have been found in any of the targeted public facilities. Recent string of threats The August 15 incident follows a series of similar warnings in recent weeks. Over the past weekend, the KSPO Dome in Seoul received a bomb threat just hours before K-pop group The Boyz were scheduled to perform the final show of their 'The Blaze' world tour. Around 2,000 concertgoers were evacuated, but no explosive devices were discovered. The Boyz concert was reportedly delayed due to a bomb threat. Earlier in August, authorities received alerts at the Seoul Foreign Resident Center on August 7 and at Gwangju's Shinsegye Department Store on August 11. Both incidents were also confirmed as false alarms, with no explosives found. Authorities urge caution While no immediate danger has been detected, police continue to investigate the series of hoax threats and their possible connections. Officials are urging citizens to remain alert, especially during public events or national holidays, and are closely monitoring high-traffic venues for safety. The repeated misuse of a single alias underscores the growing challenge of online-fueled hoaxes and false alarms. Law enforcement continues to work to identify those responsible while keeping the public informed and safe. To stay updated on the stories that are going viral, follow Indiatimes Trending.

J-pop idol Kenshin Kamimura found guilty of indecent assault in Hong Kong

Judge finds Kenshin Kamimura guilty of indecent assault Court imposes HK$15,000 fine after defence argues for financial penalty Kamimura had pleaded not guilty, and did not testify in court Victim said Kamimura repeatedly touched her thigh, asked her to go to toilet with him HONG KONG, August 13 (Reuters) - J-pop star Kenshin Kamimura was found guilty by a Hong Kong court on Wednesday of the indecent assault in March of a woman who served as his interpreter during a fan event. Kamimura, 26, was previously a member of the six-member boy group One N' Only. He pleaded not guilty in April and chose not to testify during the trial in July. Magistrate Peter Yu said that Kamimura's behaviour showed obvious disrespect towards women, noting that his touches suggested a sexual undertone. "Such behaviour should be condemned," Yu said, fining him HK$15,000 ($1,923) after his lawyer in mitigation urged a financial penalty rather than jail. On hearing the sentence, Kamimura hugged his court translator, while a handful of fans wept in the public gallery. Dozens more waited outside after the hearing ended as Kamimura left court without saying anything. The victim, identified only as X, testified in July that Kamimura and actor Junsei Motojima hired her as an interpreter to translate during a fan meeting in Hong Kong on March 1. The group then attended a celebratory dinner at a restaurant in the city's Mong Kok district. She told the court Kamimura moved to sit beside her during a toasting session and started repeatedly brushing and patting her thigh before suggesting they visit the bathroom together. He asked both in Chinese and Japanese if she knew what he meant, she added. X said she declined, telling him, "If you want to go, you can go by yourself." She said she then moved away to get some tea, but Kamimura blocked her path and again asked her to go outside. She told the court she refused. After X returned to her seat, Kamimura also came back and sat beside her. He apologised and said, "Forget what just happened," she recalled in her testimony. The singer also asked her about her relationship status and whether she planned to marry her boyfriend, she said. Kamimura then brushed her inner thigh again with the back of his right hand, X told the court. She shrank away, but he repeated the action about two to three times. Kamimura's lawyer said in mitigation that his client did not intend to coerce or threaten and that alcohol might have affected his judgment. The magistrate said that Kamimura had paid a huge price for the incident, saying he was immediately fired by his company and forced to leave the band.
