It's that time of year again, when the temperature rises and people in the city look for ways to beat the heat. For many, that means reaching for mint, as loads of stores have jumped on the choc mint bandwagon as a way to stay cool during the hottest days of the year.
One brand surprised everyone recently by putting forth its own choc mint treat, because it's Yojiya, a Kyoto-based company that's more commonly associated with skincare, specifically oil blotting paper. With only one store in Tokyo, aside from Haneda Airport, Yojiya is now thrilling fans in the capital with a special pop-up called 'Yojiya Flat'.

The Tokyo pop-up can be found in the 'Calendarium' space on the first floor of the Yurakucho Marui department store.
The highlight of this pop-up event is the cafe space, something you can't get in Tokyo, which serves up choc mint parfaits as a special treat for summer. There are two kinds available — a regular variety and one that's called '50 Times the Minty Coolness! Choco Mint Parfait', which contains about 50 times the usual amount of mint, as a next-level parfait for diehard choc-mint fans looking for a challenge.
We decided to bring a fellow choc-mint enthusiast along on our trip to try the parfait, and when we arrived our jaws dropped to the floor as we found there was a three-hour wait for the cafe.
Yojiya fans in Tokyo were definitely seizing this opportunity to try the treat, and even passers by were drawn to the space, thanks to the advertising, which read '50 times Choco Mint Arrives in Tokyo, Now Only'.
As we discussed returning in three hours, a staff member overheard our conversation and told us, 'If you opt for takeout, we can serve you right away.'
▼ It was hot outside and the treat might melt quickly in the heat, but with the two of us we figured we would manage.

We ordered the '50 Times the Minty Coolness! Choco Mint Parfait' for 1,350 yen (US$9.29) and a cappuccino for 800 yen, seeing as you get a venue-limited 'assemble-it-yourself cutlery set' with a storage case, if you order a parfait and drink together.

Before we got carried away with our freebie, we quickly began taking photos of the treats before they melted in the heat.
▼ Time to find out just how powerful 50 times the mint truly is.
Starting from her ear, we dug in to find the upper portion contained sponge and cream, so the choc-mint flavour wasn't that strong to start with.
Just as we were prepared to be disappointed with the lack of mint, we dug into the next layer, where we hit a chunk of choc-mint ice cream, and delved into a three-centimetre (1.2-inch) thick chocolate zone packed with crunchy chocolate chips.
This is where the true '50 times' power finally revealed itself, with waves of intense minty coolness hitting the taste buds with every crunch.
It was insanely minty, so much so that it felt like swallowing a whole pack of mints. In fact, after digging into all the layers and finishing just shy of half of it, we had to give up, handing it to our choc mint-loving friend, who was more than happy to gobble it all up, even after finishing theirs.

…it was time to try the cappuccino.
Unlike the parfait, which was totally unbalanced, skewing towards minty oblivion, this has just the right amount of coffee and milk, making it a great palate cleanser.
Both items were incredibly high quality, so we left with satisfied grins on our faces, and sweetening the deal even further was the fact that we were able to pick up plenty of free novelties during our visit.

Our Japanese-language writer Takuya Inaba has been enjoying the American TV show Adam Eats the 80's (2022), in which the host devours anything hot in the 1980s with a heaping side dose of nostalgia. In particular, the episode where he eats a Cinnabon cinnamon roll piqued Takuya's interest. He could almost sense the overly sweet sugar shock of the roll through his TV screen. He decided the only way to quench his curiosity was to visit Cinnabon and try one of the famous pastries for the first time. ▼ Founded in Washington State in 1985, Cinnabon is commonly found at shopping malls across the U.S., where its presence is revealed by the heavenly wafting scent of cinnamon on the air. Luckily for Takuya, Cinnabon exists in a number of locations throughout Japan, often paired with Seattle's Best Coffee. He promptly headed to the nearest Futako-Tamagawa Rise Shopping Center location in Setagaya Ward, Tokyo. His excitement intensified when he entered the store and saw rows of showy cinnamon rolls. It was as if his American '80s food dream were coming true right before his eyes. Takuya started off with the Cinnabon Classic for 540 yen (US$3.69). It was a thing of beauty, with the cream cheese frosting flowing over the sides of the pastry. It wasn't until he held it in his hand that he realized just how enormous it was. He continued to watch in amazement as the frosting dripped dangerously lower. His fingers couldn't hold it for long, though, because it was still piping hot. With premonitions of a scalded tongue, he decided the safest way to consume his prize was to cut it open to allow some steam to escape. The inside was unexpectedly pretty, with layers of the roll clearly visible in a spiraling pattern. Takuya finally took a bite and was spellbound by its delicious sweetness. If he had to describe the taste in words, he would go with 'THE American' (verbatim). Curiously, there wasn't a heavy aftertaste, and the dough was plenty springy and soft. He also appreciated the fact that the cinnamon flavor wasn't too strong, but added just the right balance of spice to stimulate his appetite. Despite its size, Takuya still had plenty of room, so he next decided to spring for a convenient cup version called Roll on the Go (480 yen). This one featured a cinnamon roll pre-cut into bite-sized pieces in a paper cup. He appreciated the fact that his fingers didn't have to get sticky while eating this one. Even that addition didn't leave Takuya fully satiated, so he peeked at the menu to see what kinds of special flavors there were. First, the Caramel Pecanbon (600 yen regular/420 yen mini size) was a done deal. It looked so pretty with its flowing caramel frosting and pecan nut topping. Once he took a bite, he could only laugh because it felt like every cell in his body had been jolted awake from the sheer sweetness of it all. People could probably get addicted to this exact taste. Second, the Red Cherrybon (620 yen regular size/450 yen mini size) as his last order was a no-brainer. He thought it looked somewhat seductive with its drizzling of deep crimson cherry sauce. It also turned out to be his personal favorite, with the sour cherry flavor causing him to lose all remaining sense of sanity until he had devoured the whole thing. Luckily, coffee paired very well with all of the sweetness and helped settle his stomach at the end of this gastronomic adventure. We haven't gotten word yet if Takuya's still recovering from his Cinnabon-induced food coma, but whenever he wakes up, he can probably raise his blood sugar again through Lawson's current double-sized food offerings. An elegant and hefty cheeseburger bento awaits at the 'Japanese Costco' Lopia

It's so classy, you'll want to eat it with a knife and fork. There's a supermarket in Japan nicknamed the 'Japanese Costco' because much like its namesake, it sells very large quantities of food at bulk-discount prices. Its real name is Lopia, and our writer Ikuna Kamezawa often enjoys going there even though many of the things for sale are way too big for her to ever eat on her own. But this time, a certain cheeseburger bento caught her eye. It was large, but not too large, and only cost 1,078 yen (US$7.40), so she decided to take the meaty plunge. It was so big that she could barely fit it into her shopping bag and things only got worse as it started to rain while she walked home. She had to carry it very carefully too, for reasons we'll see in a moment. After getting home, she unveiled her Manpuku Burger Double Cheese and confirmed its size at about 25 centimeters (10 inches) in length. Popping the lid off we can see that the very fancy arrangement was why Ikuna had to carry it so carefully, and the sheer volume of it all was the reason it was priced a little more than a Big Mac combo. She felt kind of bad disturbing the elegant layout of her bento, but she had to take stock of what was inside before eating it. There was a double cheeseburger with two patties and two slices of cheese, some seasoned fries, and two breaded chicken filets. That photo might not do the size justice so she took some shots alongside a pack of matches for scale. Sure, a matchbox might not be the most universally understood comparison, but she was just so excited to eat this thing. ▼ Fries ▼ Chicken Filets ▼ Double Cheese Burger Ikuna turned her attention back to the cheeseburger and tried to reassemble it in a normal way. That's when she noticed something was off with the proportions of the bun and patties. She thought this must be some chic designer cheeseburger arrangement she'd never seen before. That might give the illusion Lopia is being chintzy with the meat, but rest assured they were good-sized beef patties. For a more understandable comparison, Ikuna placed a Yamazaki Bakery convenience store cheeseburger next to it. This store-bought burger selling for about 99 yen is slightly smaller than a McDonald's cheeseburger and the Lopia burger blows it out of the water. ▼ Lopia's burger ▼ Yamazaki's burger There were definitely some structural integrity issues with it though, so our writer opted to eat the whole thing with a knife and fork. A fancy burger like this deserves fancy eating utensils anyway. The hamburger patty wasn't juicy at all, but it was very dense and meaty. This texture might turn some burger aficionados off, but she felt kids would really go for it. There was also a sweet ketchup on it, but really the flavor of the beef stood out so much that she barely even remembers eating the cheese and bun. While it might not be for everyone, the taste of this burger bento was right up Ikuna's alley. Her only complaint — if you could call it that — was that it was too much for her to eat in one sitting. But for the price she paid, that's the kind of problem you'd want to have. In conclusion, she definitely recommends the Manpuku Burger Double Cheese for big eaters. Lopia can be a little random with their offerings, especially in the bento section, but Fridays are known as 'Fry Days' there which is when they usually go all out in that department so your best chance is to find it then.
