WHSMITH customers have been warned they need to spend their unused gift vouchers before they become worthless.
The struggling retailer is set to disappear from the high street in a matter of weeks as its new owner rebrands it to TGJones.

The stationery giant has been a feature of the British high street since the 1800s but has fallen on hard times in recent years.
Now Sun checkers can reveal bosses at the ailing favourite are already reminding punters to use their unspent gift vouchers in stores while they are still valid up until the end of June next year.
Signs headed "Important Notice on Changes to WHSmith Gift Cards' erected at the firm's Croydon branch in south London state: 'This store, along with all other former high street stores, is now owned and operated by TG Jones.
'This has an impact on how you can use your WHSmith gift card or eGift card.
'You can continue to use your WHSmith gift card or eGift card in this store and in other TGJones, and on www.tgjonesonline.co.uk, up until June 28, 2026, in accordance with the terms and conditions for your WHSmith gift card or eGift card.
'Before and after June 28, 2026, you may continue to use your WHSmith gift card or eGift card in WHSmith stores in travel locations and hospitals (excluding concessions and stores located at motorway service stations, WHSmith Local, London Underground sites or WHSmith franchise stores), in accordance with the terms and conditions for your WHSmith gift card or eGift card.'
Consumer experts have urged shoppers to use their vouchers before it's too late.
Martyn James, Sun Squeeze Team Member and independent consumer champion, said: 'When a company goes bust, then your vouchers, gift cards and even store credit vanish, never to be seen again.
"So, when you hear that a business is in trouble, spend,spend, spend, or lose your credit.
'However, WHSmith didn't go bust, it was purchased by another business.
WHSmith sells 500 UK shops
"Where this happens and the business rebrands, it is usually down to the business on whether it must honour credit vouchers and gift cards.
'This often depends on whether it was a direct takeover (usually honoured) or the sale of a failing business (the new retailer doesn't take on liability).
'In this case, WHSmith customers have less than a year to spend their vouchers, which in fairness, is often how long they last before expiring anyway.
"But, if you have vouchers, get online or in-store and spend them - or risk losing the credit forever.'
WHSmith stores that have closed
A total of 20 WHSmith stores shut this year ahead of the rebrand.
The retailer's Bedford site is set to close on July 5.
The store in the Frenchgate Centre in Doncaster closed on May 31, while the Stockton branch also shut on May 17.
Branches in Halstead and Woolwich shut on April 12, and Halesowen and Diss followed on April 19.
Just a week later, stores in Newport and Haverhill also pulled down the shutters.
Reena Sewraz, Which? retail editor, added: 'Usually if a retailer you have a gift card for goes bust, you may struggle to get your money back.
'In this case, WHSmith has been bought and rebranded as TGJones and existing gift cards and vouchers can be used both online and in store up until June 28, 2026.
'Before and after this date, you can still redeem vouchers at WHSmith travel locations, including airports and hospitals.
'If the gift card or voucher was bought through a third party, check to see if the purchaser can approach them for a refund.
"The purchaser has no right to a refund but the third-party company may choose to refund you as a gesture of goodwill."
Hobbycraft owner Modella Capital agreed a deal to take over the chain's troubled high street arm back in March.
As part of the deal, all 464 remaining high street stores are rebranding to TGJones.
The sale has now officially completed and the WHSmith website has rebranded, while all stores are listed on Google as TGJones.
Some shoppers have already spotted signs going up in stores reading 'Thank you for shopping at TGJones.'
Modella put in planning applications to local councils to change the signage on its stores last month.
History of WHSmith
The rebranding means the WHSmith name will be disappearing from the high street for good.
WHSmith's travel stores will still remain in airports, hospitals, railway stations and motorway service areas as these have not been taken over by Modella.
The first WHSmith store was opened back in 1792 was opened by Henry Walton Smith and his wife Anna.
It was located in Little Grosvenor Street, London and was initially a news vendor.
When Henry and Anna died, the business was taken over by their youngest son William Henry Smith.
He renamed the business WH Smith & Son in 1846.
The business began expanding around this time and opened its first railway news stand at Euston Station in 1848.
It opened its first depots two years later in Birmingham, Manchester, and Liverpool.
WH Smith & Son continued to be passed down by the family before becoming a limited company in 1928, with all shares owned by the third Viscount.
The company became a public limited business in 1948, with staff and members of the public taking shares.
The business expanded hugely between the 1970s and 1990s, and during this time changed its name to simply WHSmith.
The last member of the Smith family left the board in 1996.
Over the years, the brand has sold a variety of products including everything from vinyl records to DVDs and computer games.
But it has always been best known for its wide variety of books, stationery, and sweets.
In more recent years, WHSmith has struggled on the high street – although its travel sales have surged.
The company confirmed in January it would sell off its high street business.
Modella then snapped up WHSmith's high street stores after an auction process.
Shoppers have also started receiving emails from TGJones.
One confused customer wrote on social media: 'I got an email from TG Jones thinking how? Then realised its WHSmith's new name, crazy.'
Another added: 'I keep getting emails from someone called TG Jones and it was apparently a company that has changed its name, it was failing to tell me what company…just had another one and it's WHSmith??? WHAT.'
Other customers have expressed sadness at the loss of the iconic retailer from Britain's high streets.
One wrote: 'New generation will never experience the feeling of going to WHSmith in your Year 6 summer holidays and building a pencil case from scratch and picking all your stationary for Year 7.'
Another sad shopper added: 'I did my school shopping every year at WHSmith since reception, same with my sister too, this is so sad.'
While a third nostalgic punter wrote: 'My parents met working at WHSmith and they've been married 30 years.'

EasyJet warns on profit hit from French air strike, shares slide
July 17 (Reuters) - EasyJet (EZJ.L), opens new tab warned on Thursday that a strike by French air traffic controllers earlier this month and rising fuel costs would hit its annual profit, sending the airline's shares down 8%. The low-cost carrier said it still expects "good profit growth" for the year ending September, but forecast a hit of about 25 million pounds ($33.47 million) from the French strike on July 3 and 4, at the start of Europe's peak travel season, and higher fuel costs. EasyJet reported pretax profit for the third quarter rose by about 50 million pounds to 286 million pounds, in line with expectations. Its shares fell as much 8.1% to 483.3 pence by 0729 GMT and were the top loser on London's blue-chip FTSE 100 index. "We are extremely unhappy with the strike action by the French ATC in early July, which as well as presenting unacceptable challenges for customers and crew also created unexpected and significant costs for all airlines," easyJet CEO Kenton Jarvis said in a statement. Some analysts said they cut forecasts for the year based on Thursday's results. While demand has remained strong for easyJet's budget-friendly flights and holiday packages, travellers overall are taking longer to book tickets amid worsening global macroeconomic sentiment, which the British-based airline said has continued. Jarvis told reporters on a media call that the later booking trend "could have something to do with hot weather" because travellers are waiting to see how heatwaves, which have seen temperatures top 40 degrees Celsius in some parts of Europe, play out. Still, European airlines have continued to report relatively solid results this year, with few signs that travel demand in the summer is substantially lagging last year. Bernstein analyst Alex Irving said the results showed "another reassuringly surprise-free quarter" as easyJet has remained one of the more stable carriers compared to some of its European competitors like Wizz Air (WIZZ.L), opens new tab. Jarvis also told reporters that worsening conflict in the Middle East had had a slight impact on services to destinations like Egypt and Turkey for a few weeks, but that demand has since recovered and the carrier had no plans to change routes as a result of the conflict. The Home Office 's top civil servant received a £455,000 pay package including a £20,000 bonus as small boat arrivals spiralled. On top of his £200,000 annual salary Sir Matthew Rycroft received a £50,000 'exit payment' – of which £30,000 was tax-free – when he stepped down as permanent secretary at the end of March. The Home Office's annual accounts – which set out sums in £5,000 brackets – showed the mandarin received a performance-related bonus payment of £20,000 to £25,000. It was significantly higher than his £5,000 to £10,000 bonus the previous year. From the start of the financial year covered by the report to the date of Sir Matthew's departure on March 28, official figures show 38,023 small boat migrants reached Britain. It was a rise of 26 per cent on the 30,288 who arrived in the equivalent period in 2023-24. Sir Matthew also received £179,000 in pension benefits for the year. It brought his total remuneration package to £455,000 to £460,000. Sir Matthew, now 57, announced in February to staff he was leaving the Home Office 'for pastures new'. 'Bonuses are based on performance levels attained and are made as part of the appraisal process,' it said. In November 2023 MPs were left exasperated at the lack of detail Sir Matthew was able to provide about the cost of the Rwanda asylum scheme, which was then in development. Following a series of exchanges where Sir Matthew and his second-in-command Simon Ridley were unable to answer questions, committee chairman Dame Diana Johnson asked: 'Do we have any figures about anything?' Dame Diana is now a Home Office minister, and overlapped at the department with Sir Matthew from last July's election until his departure. The figures came as migrants were seen sprinting across a French beach to reach a dinghy. In scenes reminiscent of the opening sequence of Oscar-winning 1981 movie Chariots of Fire, the migrants ran through surf on the beach at Gravelines, near Calais, this morning. Several hundred migrants are thought to have reached Britain today. Since Labour came to power 45,746 have arrived, not including today's unconfirmed number.

UK and Germany sign ‘Friendship Treaty' on migration and defence
Another week and another European leader in London as Keir Starmer 's charm offensive continues to gather pace. The British Prime Minister and German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz , today signed a 'Friendship Treaty' at the Victoria and Albert Museum, the location chosen for its symbolic reference to a loving, and politically useful, royal marriage between the United Kingdom and Germany . It was all smiles from the German Chancellor as he put his name to a 23-page document that diplomats have spent months negotiating. 'This is a historic day for German-British relations. It's also a great honour for me personally to be here today in this museum, which bears two names that are closely linked to British and German history,' said Merz. After years of difficult relations since Britain left the EU, Starmer has been wooing European leaders and has promised to turn the page. According to sources in Berlin, Merz bonded with Keir Starmer in his first week as Chancellor back in May when the two leaders, along with French President, Emmanuel Macron, took the long train journey to Kyiv and back again. But beyond the warmer words, for Merz, like Macron, it is current threats like migration pressures and fears about Russia that are driving continental powers back towards collaboration with Brexit Britain. Last week Macron and Starmer agreed to trial a migrant exchange programme. Under the 'one in, one out' agreement, a number of migrants already in the UK – reportedly as low as 50 per week – will be sent back to France. In exchange, the UK will accept an equal number of migrants directly from France. It is hoped migrants will be put off trying to cross the Channel if they risk being sent back. Although there is some scepticism that the scheme will achieve that aim. Downing Street says today's agreement with Germany will likewise 'help smash smuggling gangs' which fuel the migrant problem. 'This is a historic day for German-British relations.' – Friedrich Merz According to the UK government, Germany has committed to a change in the law by the end of this year which would allow authorities there to prosecute smugglers using warehouses in Germany to store inflatables intended for the transport of migrants across the English Channel. That's a loophole that has exasperated authorities in other European countries, including the UK, trying to go after the gangs. In one example, quoted in court documents during a case against a major smuggling gang, crates containing motors, around one hundred lifejackets and other equipment were delivered to the wrong address in a city in western Germany. Local German police noted down serial numbers and then helpfully ensured that the packages were handed over to the smugglers. Just five days later, a boat with an outboard motor matching one of those serial numbers landed in Britain, with 29 migrants on board. The Home Office says the change in the law will give German authorities 'the tools they need to investigate and take action against warehouses and storage facilities used by migrant smugglers to conceal dangerous small boats intended for illegal crossings to the UK. 'This will bolster efforts to prosecute those involved in smuggling and support the dismantling of the criminal networks driving unacceptable and unlawful journeys through Europe.' The decision to work together on a problem like migration is a strategic choice and one that is threaded through the 'Friendship Treaty'. Even that name – Friendship Treaty – has been carefully chosen to evoke new relations. 'This is a partnership with a purpose,' said Prime Minister Starmer. 'I think it illustrates what our work on the international stage is all about, building the foundations of stability across our continent to make us safer, boost our economy and deliver change across for our people. It's about delivering results, and that's what we're working towards. 'In a dangerous world, we do this together', he added.
