MBDK to poll passengers on Smart Selangor bus route

KLANG Royal City Council (MBDK) will study the Smart Selangor bus route that currently plies Persiaran Raja Muda Musa to see if there is a need for two additional stops in the Taman Gembira area.
'The council's Planning Department will initiate a poll of passengers to see if there is demand to serve SK Taman Gembira and Telok Gadong KTM Komuter station,' said Klang mayor Datuk Abd Hamid Hussain, referring to the places located along Jalan Hilir 2, Klang.
'We will analyse the existing route for better efficiency and convenience.
'The poll will also help us understand travel times to optimise service frequency.
'If there are parents who want the bus to serve the school area, we will have to adjust the route and stops,' he said after a Hari Raya Aidilfitri event at MBDK's headquarters.
Abd Hamid said having the two additional stops would add six more minutes to the route.
On April 21, StarMetro highlighted the call for MBDK to review the bus route to include Jalan Hilir, which covers an estimated 750m to the Telok Gadong KTM Komuter station.
SK Taman Gembira is a short distance from the train station, along Jalan Hilir 2.
Abd Hamid said such feedback gives the council an avenue to improve its free bus service.
'This can also lead to increased ridership,' he said.
'A more attractive public transport experience will help schoolchildren get to school on time and more commuters using the rail service for better first- and-last mile connectivity,' he said.
Abd Hamid said he agreed that close collaboration with Smart Selangor Delivery Unit (SSDU) on data sharing would help better understand commuter needs and enable seamless ridership.
The SSDU is involved in planning, coordinating and monitoring the the Smart Selangor bus service to ensure its effectiveness.

Control pollution to keep Sungai Klang clean, local councils told
Sungai Klang passes through five local authorities. — Filepic LOCAL councils that border or have parts of Sungai Klang passing through their jurisdictions must prioritise pollution control to preserve the river's ecological health, an exco member says. Selangor local government and tourism committee chairman Datuk Ng Suee Lim urged all local authorities with waterways feeding into Sungai Klang to tackle sources of pollution, including industrial waste within their boundaries. 'We can achieve a clean Sungai Klang if all local councils implement effective pollution control measures. 'It must be done to protect aquatic life, safeguard water resources and ensure long-term sustainability of the ecosystem,' Ng said at a press conference after launching the 'Love Sungai Klang' mini convention at Bukit Raja Hall in Klang. He said it was necessary for Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ), Subang Jaya City Council, (MSBJ), Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) and Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) to address sources of pollution. Ng says concerted effort needed from all local councils. 'Most of the floating rubbish end up downstream through Klang Royal City Council's (MBDK) borders. 'We cannot leave it to MBDK alone to deal with river pollution, a concerted effort is needed.' The 120km Sungai Klang flows from Hulu Gombak to the Straits of Malacca near Port Klang. Within MBDK's administrative area, the river passes five housing areas and 11 villages. Klang mayor Datuk Abd Hamid Hussain said 'Love Sungai Klang' was a community-based programme aimed at involving riverside residents in the clean-up. 'We have involved all communities living along Sungai Klang, even school students,' SMK Methodist ACS Klang teacher Geetha Arunasalam, who attended the event with four students, said it helped to create awareness among the younger generation. SK (1) Simpang Lima teacher Kavita Subramaniam, who brought four pupils, said recycling was a priority.

555 inmates released on licence ahead of Aidiladha under Ihsan Madani programme
KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 555 inmates nationwide were released today under the Ihsan Madani Licensed Prissoner Release Programme (PBSL) in conjunction with the upcoming Aidiladha celebration. In a statement yesterday, the Malaysian Prisons Department said that the initiative aims to provide eligible inmates with the opportunity to reunite with their families and reintegrate into society, in line with national rehabilitation and social reintegration efforts. Johor recorded the highest number of releases with 83 inmates, followed by Sabah (82), Sarawak (68), Terengganu (67), Pahang (54), Selangor (51), Penang (45), Kedah (28), Perak and Negeri Sembilan (25 each), Perlis (15) and Kelantan (12). "The programme is carried out in conjunction with national festive celebrations to support the rehabilitation process and encourage the successful reintegration of eligible prospects into society," the department said. Including previous releases granted during Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Kaamatan and Gawai, a total of 1,934 inmates have benefited from PBSL so far this year. Between 2020 and 2024, a total of 57,779 inmates were released under the scheme, with 2024 marking the highest annual figure at 20,578, followed by 2023 (15,180), 2022 (8,412), 2021 (3,517) and 2020 (1,938). PBSL is available to inmates serving prison sentences of under three years, as well as to vulnerable groups and pregnant women serving terms of less than four years. To qualify, inmates must have completed rehabilitation programmes, demonstrated good behaviour and secured a suitable guarantor. – BERNAMA
