Lulu admits 'it feels scary' as she shares rare admission on mental health
EXCLUSIVE: Iconic singer Lulu spoke on mental health as she launches her own charity and admits that it does feel scary to open up but hopes it will help people
Lulu has urged anyone suffering mental health issues to try to talk to a friend or family member adding: "It feels scary but you've got this".
The acclaimed singer, 76, made the comment after her own charitable fund Lulu's Mental Health Trust launched its first major event, a sponsored walk on Monday(May 19). Lulu decided to set up the fund while writing her memoir, celebrating 60 years since she stormed into the UK charts with her iconic hit Shout and realised the part mental health has played throughout her life, whether her own or her loved ones.
She told the Mirror: "The process of writing my memoir opened my eyes to the role that mental health has played in my life. Whether that's my own mental health, my loved ones, colleagues, whatever. When I was first coming into the industry we didn't talk about it! But it's so important, and I want to give back. People will understand what I mean when they read the book I think… it's coming soon."
Reflecting on her career, she added: "It feels kinda full circle. I've supported lots of charities over the years and still do, but to be able to put this together myself and help make a difference is really touching. We never talked about mental health or mental illnesses when I was growing up, I'm glad it's now something we're aware of.
"It feels important to take a minute to look back at everything I've achieved and take time to think how I can use it to give back to those that need it."
Lulu announced her new charity was being set up in February, coming off the back of her Champagne For Lulu farewell show last year which had to be extended due to demand.
She began her career with the single Shout, performed alongside her band The Luvvers, which reached number seven in the UK singles chart, and went on to have 10 UK top 10 singles and one top 10 album.
For her first charity initiative, Lulu will lead a mammoth walk which will take her from the school where she filmed ' To Sir With Love' in E1 0AQ to the old Decca studio where she recorded ' Shout' in NW6 3AU - passing more places connected to her incredible six-decade long career along the way.
Asked what she hoped people would take away from this campaign, she added: "The message we want to put out about how important it is to nurture and look after your mental health.
"If they take away anything, I'd love for it to be that there is help out there if they need it. If you're struggling please talk to someone. Talk to a friend, a family member, or someone trained in what to do and say. It feels scary, but you've got this."
She added: People have been so generous. I didn't expect so many people to sponsor me and it's only our first initiative! There will be more to come."

Although Love Island makes its highly-anticipated return this evening, fans are in for a shock as one contestant faces an early exit due to a dramatic twist – they'll be leaving moments after their arrival in the villa. It's been disclosed that tonight will see a female contestant leave following the entrance of a bombshell. Toni, a high-end VIP waitress from the glitzy city of Las Vegas, was revealed just yesterday as a new addition to the villa lineup. In disclosing her aspirations, she expressed her desire for "someone that can make me laugh - I'm super outgoing. And someone that's quite active. Maybe one day we could start our own family together." For the latest TV and showbiz gossip sign up to our newsletter Adventurous Toni also shared her excitement for British lads: "It's time to try something new! I have some British friends and they're pretty charming. I think all Americans love a good accent. British men are just more polite, with better manners." However, the bubbly American's entry spells immediate trouble for one of the original stars, as her presence will cause the swift removal of another contestant. The unnamed individual has already been ousted from the tropical setting, with viewers poised to witness the drama unfold during tonight's premiere episode, reports the Mirror. Article continues below "This girl will be sorely missed as was already proving to be a big character. The was absolutely gutted to leave. But the series has twists and turns at every stage and this isn't the usual dumping viewers might expect after a bombshell arrives," a source disclosed to The Sun. "Executive producer Mike Spencer-Hayter has promised drama for the tenth anniversary and this format point will not disappoint." Speaking with The Mirror about what to anticipate in the upcoming series, the show's executive producer revealed his plans. Mike expressed: "If sex happens, we'll show it. The Hideaway will be open 24 hours. We need to keep the show fresh and exciting. After 10 years, the stats speak for themselves. The show will continue to thrive. We the producers need to stay ahead of the curve. The whole 'twists and turns' thing is about making the show fresh. We're going to give it all we've got." Article continues below As she gave a glimpse into the upcoming episodes, new host Maya Jama remarked: "I feel like they forgot last year that you could come in the Hideaway at any time. We did tell them, but they kept forgetting!"

Love Island fans fume 'sick of it' after 'painful' scene that airs every year
Love Island 2025 viewers were quick to call out the contestants on this year's series as it kicked off on ITV2 on Monday night, with some fans calling for a change Not every Love Island fan was thrilled to witness the launch show on Monday night, as one moment got a bad reaction. It's something that happens pretty much every series, and fans raced to X on Monday to share they were "sick of it". Commenting on certain scenes being "painful" and "unnecessary" , some even called on bosses to ban it. The issue they had was the screaming from the girls as they entered the villa. As each female Islander met their new pals, ahead of host Maya Jama 's arrival, a chorus of screams were heard. It got louder and louder and for some fans, they simply could not handle it. Taking to X, fans begged the show to stop the Islanders screeching each year, as many reached for the remote to quieten the volume. One fan posted: "8 minutes in and I'm already sick of the screaming." Another agreed: "God girls stop screaming!!!!" as a third added: "All this screaming on entering the villa is so unnecessary, your not 10." A fourth fan posted: "I can't bare the screaming," as another said: "The start of the season is always PAINFUL bc of all the damn screaming." The comments kept on coming too with one reading: "Never been so grateful for the mute button petition to ban screaming next year." Another said: "I just can't with the screaming!!!" while a third added: "Why are they screaming so much omg." That wasn't the only complaint of launch night, with some fans getting fed up with the same joke being repeated about one star's name. After Shakira entered the villa and introduced herself to some of the Islanders, many of them kept commenting on her famous namesake, singer Shakira. So every time she said her name, at least one Islander asked her if her hips lied, referring to the hit track Hips Don't Lie. One unamused fan said: "I bet she's sick to f**k off hearing 'Hips Don't Lie' cause I know I am." Another commented: "I'm already sick of this hips don't lie thing," as another added: "Take a shot every time Shakira says 'these hips don't lie'." Shakira saw the funny side though, clearly having heard it before. Another fan commented though: "She's had to hear that every time she meets anyone." Love Island 2025 airs every night at 9PM on ITV2 and ITVX. * Follow Mirror Celebs and TV on TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Threads.
