The Hindu4 hours ago
The office of Finance Minister K.N. Balagopal has lodged a complaint with the State Police Chief against a Facebook page for posting allegedly defamatory content about the Minister.
Mr. Balagopal said in a Facebook post that that the admins of the page had posted misleading content related to his hospitalisation in May, 2025 and the medical bill at the Government Medical College Hospitalisation, Thiruvananthapuram.
According to the page, the Minister had claimed a huge sum for just a day's hospitalisation. Mr. Balagopal said he was eligible for seeking medical care in a private hospital, where the bill would have been much higher. Yet, he was being persecuted for depending on the affordable public healthcare system, he said. Mr. Balagopal was hospitalised from May 12 to May 17.

(Image Source: Facebook/Alumni Association, School of Medicine of Loma Linda University) What does it really take to live past 100 — and not just survive, but stay healthy, independent, and active? Dr. John Scharffenberg, a 101-year-old physician and public health expert, may have the answer. With a life spanning wars, pandemics, and evolving health trends, Scharffenberg has distilled his approach to longevity into seven consistent lifestyle habits. His philosophy is grounded not in genetics or fads but in daily, deliberate choices — ones he has followed for decades and now shares with audiences worldwide. He currently lives in California, drives his own car, lectures internationally, and runs a YouTube channel called Viva Longevity, where he shares his secrets for a long healthy life. He has outlived his parents and siblings, none of whom made it to 80, attributing his longevity not to luck but to a lifestyle rooted in discipline, simplicity, and evidence-based practices. Long before public health warnings became common, Scharffenberg decided to stay away from smoking. This early choice, made during an era when tobacco use was widely accepted, has proven to be one of the most crucial. The CDC confirms that smoking is the leading preventable cause of death, affecting nearly every organ in the moderate drinking was once considered heart-friendly, newer research from global health bodies like the WHO challenges that belief. Scharffenberg has never consumed alcohol, citing its links to increased cancer risk and other chronic diseases. His stance is that no amount of alcohol is truly approach to fitness didn't involve gyms or sports. Instead, he maintained physical health through hard, outdoor work — cultivating a large garden filled with strawberries, fruit trees, and grapevines. More ‘suicide' posts over ‘inaction' surface on social media

Bhubaneswar: In the wake of the 20-year-old student setting herself on fire in Balasore after alleged inaction over her sexual harassment complaint, other individuals have begun voicing their grievances on social media platforms. On Friday, a minor girl in Sambalpur district threatened to take her own life, citing police inaction over her sexual harassment complaint against her brother-in-law. The complaint comes at a crucial time, following the govt's directive on Thursday to all departments to vigilantly monitor grievances on Facebook and X. The directive was issued after criticism over the alleged failure of authorities to address the Balasore student's social media complaint on July 1, which led to her self-immolating on the college campus on July 12. "I was abused by my sister's husband from my childhood. Though I filed a complaint at the police station, the inspector in-charge did not register my case. Without inquiring, she said that it was a false accusation. If I die by suicide, my sister's husband and the police will be responsible," her X post stated. She tagged the Sambalpur DIG, SP and other officials, seeking justice. SP (Sambalpur), Mukesh Bhamoo, told TOI: "We have promptly intervened and launched an inquiry to verify her charges." This marks the fourth public complaint on social media recently where individuals threatened suicide over unresolved issues. On July 16, the Balasore girl's family had filed a police complaint, threatening suicide over offensive social media comments about her death. Subsequently, a person posted on X on Wednesday about a man in Kendrapada district who tried to kill himself by consuming poison, allegedly due to police inaction in locating his missing son. Following the Balasore student's death, the X accounts of the home department, DGP and Balasore police have been flooded with public complaints about police inaction over the past two days. The home department has forwarded more than 50 complaints to appropriate authorities within the past two days.
