Sunderland children's hub 'relieves pressure' on parents

BBC News3 days ago

Parents living on maternity pay say a centre providing free support and activities for children will relieve the pressure on "struggling mams". The family hub, which offers services including health advice, breastfeeding drop-in sessions and children's play, has opened in Sunderland's Thorney Close. It is the fifth to open in the city, with the staff employed by Together for Children which runs children's services for Sunderland City Council. Danielle Moore, mother of ten-month-old Ozzy, said it was invaluable as many new parents could not afford to meet the costs of entertaining children.
Ms Moore said: "You feel stuck inside seeing the same four walls every single day, it's something different."At other places there are things you have to pay for and sometimes having to entertain your child at these places could become a struggle."
Leah Morrison is receiving maternity pay after giving birth to nine-month-old Niall and said it was important to have somewhere to get support without having to pay. "It's really good to see other mams in the same boat, taking about teething, weaning and everything that goes on with being with a new parent," she said."Maternity wage can dip down quickly so knowing there is something free we can come to every single week is amazing."
Jamie Scott, interim head of family hubs for Together for Children, said it was a "universal offer" and open to "any family in the city, whether parent or carers" of any gender. She said: "[Before this] families would engage with services independently, so they might come to a family centre to engage in activities and then a clinic to see a midwife, whereas now we have everything under one [roof] and we can really support their needs without the need to go to multiple venues."
In January 2025, the Labour government said £22.4m of funding would be made available for the expansion of family hubs across the country. The scheme was initially rolled out under the Conservative government.Follow BBC Sunderland on X, Facebook, Nextdoor and Instagram.

Noble Panacea: quiet luxury's answer to skincare

We think so much about how to protect our skin that the UK skincare industry is now a £3.5 billion machine. But what are successful beauty brands doing to protect and preserve the potent ingredients within that skincare? Besides housing it in swanky bottles and fancy packaging, it seems not very much. That's where Noble Panacea differs. • This article contains affiliate links that can earn us revenue Founded in 2019, the luxury skincare label Noble Panacea was created by the late Sir Fraser Stoddart whose lifetime contribution to chemistry was recognised by many prestigious awards, including a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth in 2006, the Albert Einstein World Award of Science in 2007, and becoming a 2016 Nobel laureate in chemistry. To this day it is one of the only skincare brands whose founder has such extensive accolades. After four decades of research and thousands of experiments unlocking molecular secrets, Stoddart and his team found a way to engineer the molecules within skincare to unleash properties of the active ingredients inside. And so the Organic Super Molecular Vessels (OSMV), Noble Panacea's proprietary system, was born. Behind the fancy name, in reality it is a shell built from biodegradable, renewable carbohydrates and fatty acids. These encapsulate the active ingredients within skincare, protecting them from oxidation and environmental degradation, which can have a negative effect on efficiency. While there is no way of seeing these OSMVs (they are 10,000 times smaller than a skin cell to enable them to deliver ingredients deep into the skin), the clever chemistry allows ingredients to be protected at the individual molecular level. This helps them to preserve their integrity for optimal freshness and to prevent any cross-interaction. The science doesn't stop there. The OSMVs can also be programmed to release ingredients in an ordered sequence and to allow a long-term release through a carefully controlled, staggered, multi-layered method based on the ingredient profile and its skin benefits. 'Similar to pharmaceuticals, skincare has a therapeutic window where a continual and precise dosage is the most potent and effective,' the brand says. 'Too high of an ingredient dosage may turn it into a skin irritant, whereas too low may not be effective.' To put this into perspective, most other skincare products are absorbed immediately after application, without taking into account the skin's therapeutic window, and are therefore less efficient. Noble Panacea products are different as the OSMVs let the skincare work over time — programmed to be in keeping with when your skin is the most receptive to its ingredients. This is particularly significant when it comes to nighttime skincare. Named as being one of the most iconic innovations by Noble Panacea, The Overnight Chronobiology Peel is an intensive, leave-on treatment powered by the brand's OSMV technology. The brand claims it can improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, pores and uneven skin tone through a deep exfoliation. It is one of the few chemical peels on the market calibrated to the skin's natural overnight biorhythm. The overnight peel is designed to release a micro-dose of potent active ingredients in stages throughout the course of eight hours, each designed to target a specific cycle of your sleep. During the first stage (for example, 11pm to 4am), which is the time of cellular renewal, a controlled release of complex AHAs and BHAs are released to help remove dead skin cells and exfoliate the skin. In the second stage (when the peel has been applied for over 5 hours), the skin is in its maximum absorption phase, so the product releases a blend of the herb Gotu Kola for a soothing feel. Unlike other chemical peels, there is no need to follow up with a neutralising agent post application, nor is any downtime necessary the next day. Simply use the resurfacing treatment once a week to see the results. While lots of luxury skincare brands shout about the active ingredients inside their top secret formulations, what sets Noble Panacea apart is just how those ingredients are delivered into your skin. 'We do not believe in myths and hype,' the brand says. Instead it relies on highly efficacious, dermatologist and ophthalmologist approved products, which are optimised by its programmed OSMVs and rooted in molecular chemistry. Wednesday's briefing: Bruno Fernandes says no to Saudi and Fran Kirby retires

England's hopes of Women's Nations League glory were dashed by world champions Spain in their Group A3 decider while Euro 2022 winner Fran Kirby announced she was retiring from international football. Caoimhin Kelleher completed his move from Liverpool to Brentford in the hunt for regular first-team action. Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes has confirmed he turned down a money-spinning move to Saudi Arabia because he wants to 'stay at the highest level'. The 30-year-old midfielder has been the subject of speculation linking him with a £100million switch to Al Hilal, with the Saudi Pro League side reportedly prepared to pay him £700,000 per week, but he rejected the opportunity after speaking to head coach Ruben Amorim and his family. Fernandes said: 'I simply want to stay at the highest level, playing in the big competitions, because I still feel capable of that. 'I want to continue to be happy and do what I love most. I'm still very passionate about this sport. It's my way of seeing football and I'm happy with my decision.' England missed out on a place in the Women's Nations League finals after Claudia Pina's brace earned Spain a 2-1 comeback win in Barcelona. Alessia Russo put England ahead on her 50th international appearance. But substitute Pina spearheaded the comeback for the world champions, finding an equaliser only moments after being brought on before adding a second 10 minutes later. Defeat meant England finished second in Group A3, while top-of-the-table Spain secured their spot in October's semi-finals. England midfielder Fran Kirby has announced her retirement from international football on the eve of the Euro 2025 finals. The 31-year-old, a veteran of the Lionesses' victorious European Championship campaign in 2022, has brought an end to her international career after 77 caps and 19 goals. Brighton's Kirby wrote on social media: 'After being in the England team since I was 21, it's time to close that chapter of my life. 'I didn't ever want this day to come, but I cannot tell you how proud I am it happened. It's been the biggest honour to represent my country, one that I had only dreamt about as a young girl.' Brentford completed the signing of Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher from Liverpool in an £18million deal having seen Mark Flekken join Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen. Kelleher made 20 appearances last season – largely in two spells when Alisson Becker was injured – and collected a Premier League winners' medal to go with his two Carabao Cup successes, but wanted more first-team football. The 26-year-old told the club's official website: 'I felt for my own career that the time was right for me to go, to be a number one and to play every week.' 🏆 #NationsLeague Finals Matchweek! 🙌🤩🎉 — UEFA Nations League DE (@EURO2024DE) June 2, 2025 Germany and Portugal go head-to-head in the first Nations League semi-final with either Spain or France awaiting the winners. Meanwhile the early transfer window rumbles on, with Tottenham's Son Heung-min the latest player said to be attracting interest from Saudi Arabia, Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo linked with a move to Manchester United, Cesc Fabregas reportedly in line for the vacant Inter Milan job and AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan a rumoured target for Chelsea.

Jessie J announces shock breast cancer diagnosis: 'Your girl needs a hug'

Jessie J left her fans shocked and heartbroken Tuesday by announcing that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer. The 37-year-old English songstress emphasized that the illness had been caught 'early,' saying: 'Cancer sucks in any form but I'm holding onto the word early.' In an Instagram video, she revealed that she discovered she was ill before the release of her hit new single No Secrets, which dropped on April 25. No Secrets was Jessie's comeback song after a roughly four-year hiatus, during which she welcomed her son Sky, two, with basketball star Chanan Colman. 'I have been in and out of tests throughout this whole period,' she explained, adding that she had not been adequately 'processing it 'cause I'm working so hard.' Although she was conflicted about going public with the news, she ultimately decided to do so because she is a 'sharer' and wanted to disclose the development to 'my fans and the people that care about me,' she explained. As she battles breast cancer, Jessie has continued to energetically promote No Secrets, the lead single for her upcoming sixth studio album. Last month she soldiered through an appearance at the BAFTA Television Awards in London, making her grand return to the stage to sing The Award Goes To.
