At Miss Koovagam, trans persons seek policy tailor-made for them
VILLUPURAM: Amid the vibrant colours at the Miss Koovagam beauty pageant in the district on Monday, the members of the transgender community voiced a pressing demand for a welfare policy tailor-made for the specific needs of trans women, trans men, and intersex individuals, instead of grouping them under a broader LGBTQIA+ policy.
Transwoman poet and activist Olga Aaron, while addressing the gathering, emphasised the importance of recognising the unique challenges faced by transgender individuals. 'While we share solidarity with the larger LGBTQIA+ community, the issues confronting transgender persons — ranging from healthcare to education to employment to social acceptance — require focused, tailored policy measures,' she said. Aaron urged the state government to acknowledge the distinction by formulating a standalone transgender welfare policy.
The call for policy distinction also contrasts with the recent observation made by the Madras High Court. In February 2025, Justice N Anand Venkatesh, while hearing petitions related to the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community, had noted trans men and trans women fall under the LGBTQIA+ umbrella. He added, 'I think there must be one policy when giving reservation and other benefits, we leave it to the government.'
The demand comes in the wake of discussions in the state Assembly over the introduction of a comprehensive LGBTQIA+ welfare policy. Members of the transgender community, however, argue such a blanket policy risks diluting the urgent and particular concerns they face on a daily basis. Despite the judicial perspective, the transgender community at Koovagam stood firm in their demand.
Trans woman Renuka (30) from Tirunelveli won the Miss Koovagam title at the beauty pageant while Anjana (25) from Kallakurichi and Aashmika (24) from Coimbatore secured the second and third positions respectively.

He cited the appointments of Reena Gupta as chairperson of the Punjab Pollution Control Board, Deepak Chauhan to the Large Scale Industries Board, Prabhvir Brar to Punsup, and Shalin Mitra as OSD to the health minister. "This sends a dangerous message—that Punjabis are not capable of handling their own state's institutions," he said. In a direct attack on Arora, Kalia alleged that the AAP candidate's company misused 43 acres of land allocated at subsidised rates for industrial development by repurposing it for residential and commercial use. All ongoing work will come to halt if AAP loses: Kejriwal to Ludhiana voters
Ludhiana, Jun 11 (PTI) AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday cautioned the people of Ludhiana West Assembly seat against voting for any rival party candidate in the upcoming bypoll, claiming all the ongoing development work will come to a halt. The bypoll will take place on June 19, and the counting will be held on June 23. The Ludhiana West assembly seat fell vacant following the death of AAP MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi in January. Kejriwal, along with Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and AAP's Punjab in-charge Manish Sisodia, were canvassing for party nominee Sanjeev Arora. Addressing a gathering at Sanet here, Kejriwal said, 'If you want work done, only an AAP MLA can ensure it. If you vote for candidates from other parties, all your work will come to a halt." Kejriwal highlighted Arora's efforts in addressing long-pending issues. 'In March, Bhagwant Mann and I visited a village in your constituency, where we learned that registry matters were pending for a long time. I assigned Sanjeev Arora the responsibility, and within two months, over 70 per cent of the registries were done," he said. He assured that the remaining 30 per cent of registries would be completed within a month when Arora is elected. Kejriwal warned against voting for Congress candidate Bharat Bhushan Ashu, saying, 'If you vote for Ashu, all your work will stop. He cannot bring funds. All he does is hurl abuses at Bhagwant Mann day and night." The former Delhi chief minister lauded Arora's humility and accessibility, describing him as a leader who follows the teachings of Guru Sahib and always prioritises the needs of the people. 'Vote for someone you can visit anytime and who will work for you. What will you gain by electing an arrogant person who is unapproachable?" he asked voters. He said if Arora is elected as an MLA, he would be made a Cabinet minister. 'When the results come on June 23, make Arora your MLA, and we will make him a Cabinet Minister in Punjab. Ministers have their own funds and powers, and he will use his position and funds for the development of Ludhiana West," Kejriwal added. Highlighting his government's achievements, CM Mann stated, 'Unlike other governments that start working in their final months, we began delivering from day one." He emphasised the progress made under AAP's leadership, including the recruitment of 54,154 candidates into government jobs, an accomplishment achieved with complete transparency and merit. 'Before us, jobs were given based on recommendations. Now, they are awarded based on qualifications," Mann added. He also lauded Arora's philanthropic efforts, mentioning his role in raising Rs 16 crore for a child struggling with a rare disease in Delhi, and assured the public that with Arora's election, Ludhiana West would witness unparalleled development. Civil society groups call for united oppn ahead of '26 polls
Guwahati: Following the recent appointment of Gaurav Gogoi as Assam PCC president, civil society groups have started pressuring the Congress and other anti-BJP parties to forge opposition alliances for the 2026 election. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Distinguished intellectuals and prominent personalities from Assam, including Hiren Gohain, Harekrishna Deka, Abdul Mannan, Paresh Malakar, and Santanu Barthakur, have called for opposition parties to unite while time remains. Although Gaurav Gogoi emphasised strengthening Congress first, these intellectuals stressed at a Wednesday press conference that creating a unified opposition is paramount before 2026. "Assam will be in danger if opposition unity does not become a reality before the 2026 assembly election," Gohain said. During the press briefing, Gohain highlighted Assam's "unstable situation" and "governmental overreach". He discussed the financial difficulties, rising prices, employment issues, uncertainty, and new taxation burdening citizens. He noted that while protests face restrictions, public resistance continues against "authoritarian governance". Gohain warned that without removing BJP from power, public hardship would intensify. He emphasised that BJP and RSS currently dominate state administration, necessitating civil society's involvement in the 2026 Assembly elections, with opposition unity being crucial. "In such a scenario, what role will civil society play in the 2026 Assembly elections? The first condition is a strong and united opposition against the BJP. A six-member civil society group has been working towards this objective for months, despite challenges. Gohain stressed the importance of uniting civil societies on a single platform supporting democracy, constitutional values, and Assam's interests. He announced plans for a state-level 'Unified Citizen's Convention' in Guwahati on July 5 and 6, aiming to unite social institutions and civil societies. The convention will present a white paper on BJP's decade-long governance and propose alternative solutions through a charter of demands. The convention intends to establish guidelines for civil society's role in the 2026 elections and create an action plan for public campaigning. A preliminary convention for greater Guwahati is scheduled for June 13. RS MP Ajit Kumar Bhuyan confirmed that while political parties are excluded from the June 13 convention, discussions continue regarding their participation in the July 6 open session. "The convention will discuss how civil society and organisations can play a role in the polls and on what programmatic basis. The main goal and purpose of the Unified Citizen's Convention will be to prepare a blueprint for how we can play a significant role in a united and coordinated manner by preparing a joint charter of demands and a programme," Gohain added.
