Mukhtar Ansari's MLA son Abbas sentenced to two-year jail in hate speech case
Uttar Pradesh MLA Abbas Ansari, son of gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, was sentenced to two years' imprisonment in a 2022 hate speech case by a special MP-MLA court on Saturday. In the wake of his conviction and sentencing, the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) MLA from the Mau Sadar seat could face disqualification from the Assembly. Also Read | Supreme Court grants interim bail to U.P. MLA Abbas Ansari According to the prosecution, during the last Assembly elections, Abbas Ansari, who was contesting as an SBSP candidate from the Mau Sadar seat, had threatened the Mau administration during a public meeting at Paharpur ground on March 3, 2022, saying he will "settle scores and teach them a lesson" after the elections. Defence lawyer Daroga Singh told PTI videos that Ansari was booked under Indian Penal Code sections 189 (threat to cause harm to public servant), 153-A (promoting enmity between different groups on the basis of religion, caste, place of birth, residence and language and spoiling the harmony), 171F (undue influence in election) and 506 (criminal intimidation). Mr. Singh said that after hearing both sides, special MP/MLA court Judge K P Singh convicted Abbas Ansari on Saturday and sentenced him to two years each under sections 189 and 153-A, one year under section 506 and six months imprisonment under section 171-F. All the sentences will run simultaneously. Ansari has also been fined Rs 2,000. He said that this order of the special court will now be challenged in the sessions court. At present, Abbas Ansari has got temporary bail. Mr. Singh said that Abbas's partner, Mansoor Ansari, has also been sentenced to six months' imprisonment for conspiring. However, the court acquitted Abbas Ansari's younger brother Umar Ansari in the same case. Under the Representation of the People Act, there is a provision to terminate the membership of the legislative house if the court sentences a member to two years or more. Abbas Ansari became MLA for the first time in the year 2022 by winning the election from the Mau Sadar assembly seat on an SBSP ticket under the Samajwadi Party-led alliance. SBSP is currently an ally of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party-led coalition government, and the party president is a cabinet Minister in the State. Before that, Abbas Ansari's father, politician Mukhtar Ansari, represented the Mau Sadar Assembly seat for a long time. Mukhtar Ansari, who was incarcerated in Banda district jail, died of a cardiac arrest at a hospital in Uttar Pradesh in March 2024. A five-time MLA from Mau Sadar seat, he was behind bars in UP and Punjab since 2005. He had over 60 criminal cases pending against him. He was sentenced in eight cases since September 2022 by different courts in Uttar Pradesh.

LOP Dr Charandas Mahant urges Chhattisgarh CM, speaker to install BR Ambedkar's statue at new Assembly complex in Nava Raipur
RAIPUR: With the Chhattisgarh govt advancing its plan to relocate the Vidhan Sabha to a new, state-of-the-art complex in Nava Raipur, Leader of Opposition Dr Charandas Mahant has written to chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai and Assembly Speaker Dr Raman Singh, urging the installation of a statue of Bharat Ratna Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar at the new Assembly complex. Dr Mahant stated that the architect of the Constitution, Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar, shaped the Constitution with clarity, foresight, and a spirit of social justice. He added that this serves as an ideal for any democratic nation and it is everyone's duty to follow it. Dr Mahant mentioned that during his tenure as Chhattisgarh Assembly Speaker, he announced the installation of Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar's statue in the proposed new Assembly complex. He noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave his in-principle consent to attend the inauguration ceremony of the newly constructed Chhattisgarh Assembly in November 2025. Dr Mahant believes this would be an opportune time to unveil the statue of Baba Saheb Ambedkar, which would be a great honour for the Scheduled Caste community in Chhattisgarh and India. This would also serve the broader public interest in remembering the great leader's contributions. The new Assembly complex, situated in Sector-19 of Nava Raipur, spans approximately 51 acres. It is designed to include the main Assembly building, MLA rest houses, residential quarters for officers and employees, and an auditorium with a seating capacity of 500. The complex will be powered by solar energy, incorporate rainwater harvesting systems, and feature extensive plantations of native tree species such as Mahua, Kusum, Sal, and Sagon. The new Assembly complex is expected to be fully operational by September 2025. The relocation of the Vidhan Sabha marks a pivotal step in the development of Nava Raipur in Chhattisgarh's new capital. The city is envisioned as a modern, smart, and sustainable urban centre, integrating administrative functions with cultural heritage. The new Assembly complex is set to become a symbol of democratic values and the state's commitment to sustainable development.

Not joining UDF, will not contest in Nilambur bypoll: P V Anvar
The TMC state convener, at a press conference here, said that he was not going to the UDF at this stage and none of its leaders should call him anymore. Anvar's declaration comes a day after the UDF said that if the TMC leader withdraws his recent remarks against its candidate, Aryadan Shoukath, he will be included in the front's fold. Malappuram(Kerala), May 31 (PTI) Trinamool Congress (TMC) state convener P V Anvar on Saturday said he was not interested in being part of the Congress-led UDF alliance any more, but he will not contest in the upcoming Nilambur assembly bypoll either as he does not have the money needed for it. Putting the ball firmly in Anvar's court, the UDF on Friday had said that no one in the front was pleased with the TMC leader's criticism of Shoukath and it was 'unanimously' decided that he should withdraw those remarks. Anvar, after Shoukath's candidacy was announced, claimed that public opinion in the Assembly constituency was not in his favour. He had also accused Shoukath of trying to secure CPI(M) candidacy for this constituency two months ago. UDF convener Adoor Prakash had said that he informed Anvar about the front's decision over the phone and also urged him to work in cooperation with them on all matters in the coming days. 'I fully believe that he will take an appropriate decision in favour of what we decided. It is with that belief we are moving forward,' he had said. The UDF's decision is in line with a recent remark of Leader of Opposition in the Assembly V D Satheesan who had said that Anvar has to decide whether he wants to cooperate with the front's election campaign in Nilambur and after that it will express its opinion on including him in the fold. On Friday, Satheesan had again said that Anvar had spoken against the UDF candidate and therefore, he now has to clarify whether he supports Shoukath or not. 'Let him do that and after that we will indicate our stand (on including him in the UDF),' he had said. During his press conference on Saturday morning, Anvar said that while Satheesan has no personal enmity or differences with him, some hidden forces, who wanted to destroy the TMC leader, were behind the opposition leader. 'These hidden forces want to stop me due to my outspoken nature and I believe they are the ones behind Satheesan, but I need to confirm that. They want UDF to win without my support,' he claimed. He further said that he has been 'strung along by the UDF' for the last five months without any announcement of including him as an associate member even though many of the front leaders and workers are in favour of his inclusion. Anvar said that he had wanted a candidate in Nilambur from among the farming community of the hilly region as they were currently facing the brunt of animal attacks, but no political party has done so. He said that even the CPI(M)-led LDF fielded a candidate — M Swaraj — who while hailing from Nilambur has not done anything for the people of the constituency. The TMC leader said he cannot contest in the bypoll even if he wants to as he does not have the funds needed for it. He claimed that he has been financially destroyed by the BJP and the Left because I fought for the people. 'I will continue to fight for the people and against 'Pinarayism'. There will be no change in that,' he asserted. PTI HMP HMP ADB This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. ThePrint holds no responsibility for its content.
