Man arrested on suspicion of murder after woman's body found in Birmingham
A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the death of a woman at a house in the Winson Green area of Birmingham.
West Midlands Police launched a murder investigation after officers were called to a property in Markby Road shortly before 1am on Monday 23 June.
In a statement, the force said the body of Irene Mbugua, 46, was found at the scene.
Tests later revealed she died following serious head and face injuries.
Irene's family have released a tribute to her via police: "It's so sad that you got snatched from us in such a cruel manner.
"We are so lost without you and we pray for Grace to face each day mum, your beautiful smile and hearty laughter will be missed.
"Please just remind us on how to join the dots because we don't have a map yet. Rest easy, you remain in our hearts forever."
West Midlands Police said the family are being supported by specialist officers.
Markby Road is a residential area, made up of terraced houses, around two miles (3.3km) northwest of Birmingham city centre.

The force has confirmed a man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.
A statement added that detectives are not looking for anyone else.

A Memphis police officer shot and killed a man who allegedly stabbed someone at a gas station, the Memphis Police Department confirmed June 23. Early on June 23, an officer responded to a call at a gas station at 4260 Winchester Rd., where a man had been stabbed. The officer found a man armed with 'an edged weapon on scene,' a statement from MPD said. 'As the officer attempted to arrest the suspect, the man attempted to stab the officer,' the statement said. 'The officer discharged his weapon, striking the subject. The officer immediately rendered aid and requested assistance from the Memphis Fire Department.' Kim Wheeler, a Tennessee Bureau of Investigation public affairs officer, said during a press conference that the man was initially standing outside the building before retreating inside. When the officer followed the man inside, the individual "refused to surrender," and advanced on the officer with a screw driver. The officer was struck by the screw driver in his protective vest, and the officer fired his weapon in response. The man was taken to the hospital and later died. Wheeler said the investigation is ongoing and could not comment on the relationship between the suspect and the other man inside the gas station who was stabbed. The other man who was stabbed was released from the hospital after being treated for non-critical injuries. This is a developing story and will be updated. Retired Crestwood police officer charged with second DUI to appear in court
A retired Crestwood police officer recently charged with his second DUI is set to appear in court Monday morning. Former police commander Christopher Spencer, 49, was arrested by Midlothian police at the end of March after allegedly being involved in two incidents less than an hour apart. Midlothian police said he was first involved in a hit-and-run crash on March 31, just before 2:30 p.m., in the parking lot of a White Castle on South Cicero Avenue, where he entered and hit a stop sign on the way in. Police said that about two minutes later, Spencer was seen hitting the back of a car in the drive-through, bumping into it an additional seven more times before driving onto the curb and leaving the scene. Then, about 40 minutes later, he crashed his car into a home's garage in the 15100 block of South Kostner Avenue, police said. Midlothian police said they were confused when they caught up to Spencer at the second crash site. He appeared impaired and refused a breathalyzer. A video also showed him claiming a bottle of Blackberry Crown Royal in the car was not his. CBS News Chicago obtained personnel files for Crestwood police officer Christopher Spencer, who resigned from his department. The files showed issues involving the mistreatment of women and a state fraud investigation, as well as the two drunken driving incidents.

The conviction of Ryland Headley, 92, for the murder of Louisa Dunne in 1967 is thought to be the longest-running cold case to be solved by police. Ryland Headley, then aged 34, forced entry into the home of 75-year-old Louisa Dunne in Bristol in June 1967 before attacking her. The mother-of-two's body was found by neighbours inside her terraced home on Britannia Road in the Easton area of the city on the morning of June 28. Here are other cold cases that resulted in a conviction: Murder of Louisa Dunne – 58 years Mrs Dunne, 75, was raped and murdered in 1967 after being attacked in her home in Bristol. Ryland Headley, now aged 92, was convicted for rape and murder following a trial at Bristol Crown Court in 2025. Murder of Yolande Waddington – 46 years The 17-year-old nanny was killed by David Burgess in a Berkshire village in 1966. A year later, he murdered two children. In 2012, he was given a further life sentence for Yolande's murder. Roland Long rape case – 42 years Long was jailed in 2022 for 12 years for raping a woman in the Cardiff area. Manslaughter and rape of Janet Commins – 41 years In 1976, 15-year-old Janet Commins was found dead in Flint, North Wales. A man was wrongly jailed for killing her. Former soldier Stephen Hough was later caught from DNA recovered from the scene. He was jailed for manslaughter in 2017. David Lomax rape case – 40 years The former police officer raped a woman in 1978 in Leeds after she was unable to pay a fine. He was convicted of rape and misconduct in public office in 2018 and jailed.
