Saudi: Fashion Commission launches research into sustainable recycling of Ihram clothing
RIYADH — The Fashion Commission has released a research paper titled "Recycling Ihram Clothing: Environmental Sustainability in Hajj and Umrah," which focuses on the Sustainable Ihram Initiative launched by the commission in February 2025 and its potential to radically change textile recycling management both within Saudi Arabia and abroad.
This initiative represents Saudi Arabia's first steps in the field of recycled fashion, as it combines and preserves the religious aspect, aspects of cultural heritage, and environmental responsibility.
It also seeks to transform discarded ihram clothing into sustainable clothing for the guests of God, embodying a commitment to rational resource management while preserving and emphasizing the great spiritual significance of this sacred ritual.
Burak Çakmak, CEO of the Fashion Commission, explained that the Sustainable Ihram Initiative is a vivid embodiment of the power of cooperation and concerted efforts between local and international partners, and their unwavering commitment to advancing the circular economy and developing the fashion industry in Saudi Arabia.
Mustafa Bukhari, CEO of Tadweem, the Fashion Commission's partner in the Sustainable Ihram Project, pointed out that recycling and reusing ihram garments goes beyond being mere clothing for worship; it represents an authentic expression that blends the depth of faith with the principles of responsible environmental stewardship. By aligning the values of faith with sustainability practices, it establishes a legacy based on the optimal use of resources, while preserving the profound spiritual essence of the Hajj and Umrah rituals.
The research paper analyzes the deep cultural symbolism of Ihram garments, their status, and their importance to pilgrims and Umrah performers visiting the Holy House of God.
It also examines the promising potential for expanding Ihram garment recycling projects, assessing their effective impact in reducing the growing volume of textile waste, and reviewing strategies to promote and encourage the use of recycled Ihram garments. It also raises awareness of the importance of this initiative among pilgrims, highlighting the pivotal role of technology and innovation in developing recycling processes to produce high-quality, sustainable recycled textiles and products.

Saudi: Kidana completes first phase of tent project in Mina

The full project is scheduled for completion by next year's Hajj season, with an expected capacity of up to 20,000 pilgrims. The double-storey tent initiative is set to significantly enhance the quality of accommodation services in the holy sites, enriching the pilgrim experience by providing a safe and organized residential environment that supports their well-being and meets diverse needs. It will also create an optimal setting for performing rituals with ease and peace, contributing to greater pilgrim satisfaction and promoting sustainable, efficient land use, it added.

2 Saudi expats arrested for fraudulent Hajj advertisements, fake service offers
Saudi authorities have arrested two expatriates for publishing fraudulent Hajj advertisements and offering fake services, including the sale of forged sacrificial vouchers, intended to deceive pilgrims, the Hajj and Umrah Prosecution announced. According to a statement posted by Makkah Region on X, authorities discovered both cash and forged vouchers in the suspects' possession. The individuals have been taken into custody and referred to the appropriate court, where they face potential penalties including imprisonment, fines, and the confiscation of illicit gains, in accordance with the law. The Public Prosecution emphasised its ongoing commitment to tracking down anyone who attempts to exploit pilgrims or violate their rights. It also urged the public to follow official regulations and Hajj guidelines, and to remain cautious of deceptive advertisements. This incident comes shortly after a similar case earlier in May, when an Indonesian resident was arrested for posting fraudulent Hajj ads online and engaging in related scams, according to a report from the Saudi Press Agency.

Hajj 2025: Saudi boosts Makkah hospitality with over 300,000 licensed rooms
The number of licensed rooms in hospitality facilities in the city of Makkah has exceeded 300,000 rooms, Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Tourism announced on Sunday. This increase marks a 41 per cent growth during the first quarter of 2025, compared to the same period in 2024, reflecting the growing demand and the Ministry's ongoing efforts to enhance tourism infrastructure ahead of the Hajj season. As part of its preparations, the Ministry conducted more than 1,160 inspection and monitoring tours across hospitality facilities in Makkah. These inspections were aimed at ensuring the readiness of hotels and other accommodations to welcome pilgrims during the upcoming pilgrimage season. This growth in licensed capacity is closely tied to the Ministry's broader initiatives to elevate service quality, especially in anticipation of this year's Hajj. It can be noted that starting January 1 of this year, all hospitality establishments such as travel and tourism service providers in the Kingdom were ordered to remove any unlicensed or unauthorised facilities from their listings. This directive applies to both local and international booking platforms. The Ministry has also urged all hospitality operators to ensure they have obtained or renewed their licences before resuming business activities. Non-compliance with these regulations will result in severe penalties, including fines of up to 1 million riyals, potential closures of the establishments, or both. In some cases, violators could also face damage in reputation through "public shaming".
