‘A big player' – Distant Storm brewing in Acomb Stakes

The Godolphin team went to €1.9million to secure the colt's services at the Arqana breeze-up sale in May and he gave them an immediate return on their investment when making a successful start to his career, albeit narrowly, at Newmarket's July Festival.
That form could hardly have worked out better, with not only the runner-up Constitution River and the third Catullus winning since, but also the fifth, sixth, seventh, ninth and 10th home.

Couple that with the fact Distant Storm is bred in the purple as a son of Night Of Thunder out of Date With Destiny, who was the sole foal produced by the brilliant George Washington, and it is no surprise Appleby is expecting a bold showing from his charge on the Knavesmire.
'I'm very pleased with the way he has come out of Newmarket, he ran as we expected and has always shown himself up as a nice horse,' the Moulton Paddocks handler told Tattersalls.
'The Acomb was a race we had in mind once he broke his maiden. The way he's done since his maiden means we're going with confidence that he will be a big player.
'He's a horse that's developing all the time and hopefully looks as though he has got a bright future.'
The biggest threat to Distant Storm appears to be the Aidan O'Brien-trained Italy, who landed cramped odds on his Leopardstown introduction before finishing second to Appleby's Saba Desert in the Group Two Superlative Stakes on the July course.
O'Brien said: 'He ran well at Newmarket. The race was a bit messy but he ran well, he was still green.
'We think and hope he should have come on a bit and we're expecting a nice run.'
Other contenders include Andrew Balding's Newbury winner Gewan and David Menuisier's Goodwood Galaxy, who won on his debut at Salisbury before placing a highly creditable fourth in Goodwood's Vintage Stakes.
'He ran a good race at Goodwood and it makes sense to run here,' said Menuisier.
'I think he'll be better over a mile, but there's no ideal mile race coming up right now so it makes sense to go for the Acomb and then we'll probably step him up in trip.
'He was slowly away at Goodwood and without that he could have finished even closer, but that is all in the past now and we're looking to the future.'

He has not been seen since, which may be a negative, but was due to run at Glorious Goodwood – only to miss out owing to testing ground – so has been ready for a little while. In any case, the York victory came on his seasonal reappearance, so the three-year-old Mehmas gelding is fully effective when fresh. This race is 89 yards over the bare 5f, which may not be ideal for him, as speed is his asset, but the flat course on quick going is what he wants. Selection: The Man 1pt win @ SP with Tote Bet £10 and get £50 in bonuses for new Tote customers 2.25, York – Acomb Stakes (Group 3, 7f; ITV1 and Racing TV) Aidan O'Brien won this last year with The Lion In Winter, while Charlie Appleby's subsequent 2,000 Guineas winner Ruling Court came in third. Both trainers are back for more and Appleby's DISTANT STORM is preferred to O'Brien's Italy. The selection, sired by Night Of Thunder, was bought from the same breeze-up sale as Ruling Court, costing €1.9m (compared with €2.3m for his stablemate). Also like Ruling Court last year, Distant Storm comes into this race off a debut win. Our pick only narrowly landed a maiden at Newmarket last month, but that was a race won the previous season by this year's top miler Field Of Gold – and the form is working out exceptionally well. The second, third, fifth, sixth, seventh, ninth (Oceans Four) and 10th have won since. Already have a Tote account? Check out more free bets from the UK's best betting sites, reviewed by our experts 3.00, York – Great Voltigeur (Group 2, 1m 4f; ITV1 and Racing TV) O'Brien has trained the previous two winners of this contest and has four runners of the seven this time, headed by dual Derby hero LAMBOURN, who is the pick even with a 7lb penalty. He had the run of the race in front when winning at Epsom and was not impressive when successful in a weak Irish Derby at the Curragh. But this big, galloping course will suit him, perhaps even more so than Epsom (and also Chester, where he trialled for the Derby). Los Angeles won this last year, albeit only just, having finished third at Epsom and laboured to victory in the Irish Derby. 3.35, York – Juddmonte International (1m 2½f; ITV1 and Racing TV) While there is only a small field, this is a belting edition of the Juddmonte International. Birr Castle has been supplemented – for £85,000 – to help ensure a good pace for the same owner's Ombudsman, who was most recently just denied by DELACROIX in a messy running of the Eclipse at Sandown. Our selection has been winning his races with a wicked change of pace off slow gallops, whereas Ombudsman won the Prince of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot from off a fast pace, running on really well. So maybe it's now advantage the latter contender for the Gosdens – he could simply be the stronger stayer. However, O'Brien's Delacroix is an extremely talented colt, and even if this race is run to try to blunt his late acceleration, he is fancied to simply prove the superior horse. There is also Danon Decile, who won last year's Japanese Derby and this season's Sheema Classic in Dubai. They are 1m 4f races, but he quickened off a slow pace in the latter race. See The Stars filly Sea The Fire is another contender judged on her runaway success over course and distance in the Group 2 Middleton in May. She is 2-2 at York, having won the Group 3 Strensall at this meeting last year, and her dam Arabian Queen was a 50/1 winner of this race in 2015. 4.10, York – Heritage Handicap (2m ½f; ITV1 and Racing TV) Another See The Stars progeny, ALIGN THE STARS can be excused a serious defeat at Goodwood last time, as that was over 2m 4½f and on testing ground. Getting back on quick going over this shorter trip should suit him, and he was a good second in a 1m 4f handicap here in May last year. While this season's form is patchy, he ran well – possibly even better than it looked – at Royal Ascot in June. 4.45, York – Fillies' Heritage Handicap (5f; Racing TV) RUBY'S PROFIT is rapid and this will be the first time she has had a pure speed test for a while. The ground had turned slow when she was third at Epsom on Derby Day. Ascot was too stiff a track for her later in June and the ground turned testing when she was third at Goodwood on her latest start. There could be a career best in our nap, just as long as her recent busy spell has not taken too much out of her. 5.20, York – Nursery Handicap (Class 2, 6f; Racing TV) This is a strong contest – there are 20-odd runners and four of them hold Group-race entries – but maybe it is worth giving another chance to OLD IS GOLD. The Mehmas colt came up short when selected on these pages on his previous two starts, but he is a strong traveller who went well for a long way when third (one place behind Shaman Champion) on rain-softened ground at Goodwood most recently. This race will be more of a speed test, which will suit him, and Andrew Balding's runner is one of those who has a Group entry, in the Mill Reef on September 20 at Newbury. Wednesday's UK and Irish racing Flat York (1.50-5.20, Racing TV) Carlisle (2.05-4.55, Racing TV) Kempton (5.15-8.50, Racing TV) Jumps Worcester (4.50-8.00, Sky Sports Racing) Sligo (5.05-8.08, Racing TV) Free-to-view coverage ITV4 – 1.30-4.30pm: Live from the Ebor Festival at York Ron Wood 2025 horse racing profit/loss Star ratings explained ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - confident selection ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - strong fancy ⭐⭐⭐ - fair claims ⭐⭐ - tentative choice ⭐ - minimum confidence If you want to find more odds and offers, take a look at our list of the best betting sites and free bets Check out our list of the best casino bonuses in the UK
