Late own goal and penalty earn Villa 3-1 first-leg win at Brugge
BRUGES, Belgium, March 4 (Reuters) - Aston Villa earned a 3-1 win away to Club Brugge in their Champions League last-16 first leg in Belgium on Tuesday, thanks to an own goal and a penalty kick in the final eight minutes.
Villa were in front in the third minute when Leon Bailey fired a first-time shot into the bottom corner but the hosts were level nine minutes later through Maxim De Cuyper.
The tie appeared to be heading for a draw until Brandon Mechele put the ball into his own net eight minutes from time and with two minutes left Marco Asensio converted from the penalty spot.
The sides will meet again at Villa Park next Wednesday for the second leg, to decide who will face either Liverpool or Paris St Germain in the quarter-finals.

But Branthwaite is understood to be keen to step up to the next level with Spurs able to offer the former Carlisle United man Champions League football. While it remains to be seen if United have plans to revisit a deal for Branthwaite, they are very keen on bringing Mbeumo to Old Trafford after already wrapping up the capture of Matheus Cunha from Wolves. The Brentford star refused to be drawn on his future during an impromptu interview at the Canadian Grand Prix but he did tip his old Bees boss, Frank, to do well at Spurs. "He's done so much for me," Mbeumo told Sky Sports. "He literally trusted me from the start [at Brentford] and he developed the team so well. He developed me as a human and a player so much as well. I can only wish him all the best and I'm sure he's going to do well." He added: "He knows everything; he's really smart and knows what he wants to bring the team, how he wants them to play. Enzo Maresca confirms Chelsea transfer plan after Jadon Sancho exit
Chelsea are planning a big summer of transfers as they look to build on qualifying for the Champions League and a new winger is a big priority - especially after they snubbed the chance to sign Jadon Sancho permanently Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has confirmed the club are looking to sign a new winger after paying £5million to send Jadon Sancho back to Manchester United following his unsuccessful loan spell. Sancho struggled for consistency during the 2024-25 campaign at Stamford Bridge and was criticised by fans and pundits over his mixed displays. He scored a total of five goals - the last of which came in their UEFA Conference League final win over Real Betis - and registered four assists, but his efforts weren't enough to impress Chelsea. Sancho now faces an uncertain future with Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim not planning to include him in his squad for next season. And while Chelsea spent money to back out of a permanent deal for Sancho - who would have cost them £25m - Maresca is still in need of more cover on the flanks to rival Noni Madueke, Pedro Neto and Tyrique George. We said many times, when the transfer window is open, anything can happen - to bring players or to sell players. We will see." Chelsea have already sealed a deal for Ipswich forward Liam Delap, who arrived for around £30m, and the club have been trying to do a deal for Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens. However, the Blues saw a £42m bid for the player rejected by Dortmund last week in a major blow as they were hoping to take him to the United States in time for the Club World Cup.
