Late own goal and penalty earn Villa 3-1 first-leg win at Brugge
BRUGES, Belgium, March 4 (Reuters) - Aston Villa earned a 3-1 win away to Club Brugge in their Champions League last-16 first leg in Belgium on Tuesday, thanks to an own goal and a penalty kick in the final eight minutes.
Villa were in front in the third minute when Leon Bailey fired a first-time shot into the bottom corner but the hosts were level nine minutes later through Maxim De Cuyper.
The tie appeared to be heading for a draw until Brandon Mechele put the ball into his own net eight minutes from time and with two minutes left Marco Asensio converted from the penalty spot.
The sides will meet again at Villa Park next Wednesday for the second leg, to decide who will face either Liverpool or Paris St Germain in the quarter-finals.

Tottenham set sights on ex-Man Utd transfer target after Bryan Mbeumo hijack
Tottenham and Manchester United are both trying to convince Bryan Mbeumo to sign for them this summer and now Spurs are weighing up a move for another star admired by their rivals Tottenham are said to be eyeing up a deal for long-term Manchester United target Jarrad Branthwaite as they continue to map out their plans for the summer transfer window under Thomas Frank. Spurs are anticipating a busy summer after choosing to replace Ange Postecoglou with Frank. And the Dane will be backed in the transfer market after the north London outfit booked their spot in the Champions League with victory in last month's Europa League final. Mirror Football revealed last week how Spurs have already sprung into action to try and rival Manchester United for Brentford talisman, Bryan Mbeumo. And a new report now claims that Tottenham have their sights set on another player admired by United in Branthwaite. The Everton defender, 22, was the subject of a £50million bid from United last summer but is now on Spurs' radar, according to The Mail. It's said that Tottenham could even formalise their interest later this week, although Everton are thought to consider Branthwaite as not for sale this summer. David Moyes is eager to keep the highly-rated centre half as the club ramp up their own preparations for the 2025-26 campaign, where they will officially grace their new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock for the first time. But Branthwaite is understood to be keen to step up to the next level with Spurs able to offer the former Carlisle United man Champions League football. While it remains to be seen if United have plans to revisit a deal for Branthwaite, they are very keen on bringing Mbeumo to Old Trafford after already wrapping up the capture of Matheus Cunha from Wolves. The Brentford star refused to be drawn on his future during an impromptu interview at the Canadian Grand Prix but he did tip his old Bees boss, Frank, to do well at Spurs. "He's done so much for me," Mbeumo told Sky Sports. "He literally trusted me from the start [at Brentford] and he developed the team so well. He developed me as a human and a player so much as well. I can only wish him all the best and I'm sure he's going to do well." He added: "He knows everything; he's really smart and knows what he wants to bring the team, how he wants them to play. He's been fantastic for Brentford." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Enzo Maresca confirms Chelsea transfer plan after Jadon Sancho exit
Chelsea are planning a big summer of transfers as they look to build on qualifying for the Champions League and a new winger is a big priority - especially after they snubbed the chance to sign Jadon Sancho permanently Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has confirmed the club are looking to sign a new winger after paying £5million to send Jadon Sancho back to Manchester United following his unsuccessful loan spell. Sancho struggled for consistency during the 2024-25 campaign at Stamford Bridge and was criticised by fans and pundits over his mixed displays. He scored a total of five goals - the last of which came in their UEFA Conference League final win over Real Betis - and registered four assists, but his efforts weren't enough to impress Chelsea. Sancho now faces an uncertain future with Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim not planning to include him in his squad for next season. And while Chelsea spent money to back out of a permanent deal for Sancho - who would have cost them £25m - Maresca is still in need of more cover on the flanks to rival Noni Madueke, Pedro Neto and Tyrique George. Speaking ahead of Chelsea's Club World Cup opener against LAFC this week, he said: "Jadon is not with us, so for sure that is a position that probably we need to do something. "Also, because as you already know, Misha is not with us. So in this moment we have Noni, Pedro and Ty as proper wingers. "So, for sure, something is going to happen. We said many times, when the transfer window is open, anything can happen - to bring players or to sell players. We will see." Chelsea have already sealed a deal for Ipswich forward Liam Delap, who arrived for around £30m, and the club have been trying to do a deal for Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens. However, the Blues saw a £42m bid for the player rejected by Dortmund last week in a major blow as they were hoping to take him to the United States in time for the Club World Cup. It is unclear whether Chelsea will go back with another bid for Gittens, who has fallen out of favour under new boss Niko Kovac - starting only nine games since he took over at the beginning of February. Chelsea have also failed in a bid to sign AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan. They bid £15m, but the Italian side wanted £21m. On his goalkeeping situation, Maresca said: "The keeper situation is simple, Robert is No.1, Filip is No.2, and we will analyse and judge Penders. Maignan and different players at other clubs - I don't think it is worth talking about them." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Man Utd stars ‘intimidated' by weight of shirt but can still thrive after leaving like McTominay, says former player
FORMER Manchester United star Angel Gomes has admitted the "weight of the shirt" can hold players back at the club. Gomes, 24, came through the ranks at Old Trafford and went on to make ten senior appearances. 4 Angel Gomes has admitted the weight of the Man Utd shirt can impact players Credit: Getty 4 Scott McTominay has enjoyed a new lease of life away from Man Utd Credit: Reuters The midfielder made his debut at just 16-years-old and was tipped to be the next big thing. But he eventually left in 2020 to join Lille after failing to nail down a place in the squad. Like many in recent years, Gomes has impressed away from the club and even earned his first senior England call-up last summer. Asked if players benefit when free from the pressure of playing for Man Utd, Gomes told the BBC: "I think some do. Gomes is set to move to Champions League side Marseille this summer. 'How can you sell him?' Ole Gunnar Solskjaer blasts Man Utd for Scott McTominay's transfer to Napoli And he is not the only one to have come on leaps and bounds since quitting Man Utd. Scott McTominay is worshipped at Napoli after winning the Serie A title and being voted Player of the Year this season. Antony enjoyed a successful loan at Real Betis, scoring nine goals and firing them to the Conference League final. The winger even admitted when reflecting on his tough time at Man Utd: "I didn't feel that desire to play football. "I needed to find myself and be happy again because playing football was always something I loved. "I went through difficult times when I no longer felt that pleasure. I even always told my brother, I told him that I couldn't take it anymore. "They were very hard days for me. Only I know what it was like to be there at home, not having the strength to even play with my son, going days without eating, staying locked in my room." On their new leases of life elsewhere, Rio Ferdinand said to ESPN: "They came into an environment at United which was lacking confidence, under stress, deep scars from things that have gone on before, and a team changing now, again tactically. "It's different at United. The pressure is huge. And these guys have gone to Napoli and they've gone to Betis, no disrespect, but smaller clubs in terms of pressure. "And you're seeing the best version of them. I'm happy for them, it's good."
