Arkansas Teenage Girl Mauled to Death as She Tried to Help 'Starving' Pack of Dogs Neglected by Their Owners
Makayla Fortner, 15, was killed in an enclosed area at a home in the community of Alexander, as she tried to care for around 30 starving dogs on Wednesday, June 11.
Fortner Had Been Trying to Help the Pack of Dogs After Learning About Their State of Neglect, was Trying to Find Them Permanent Homes
The teen and her mother, Stephanie Wilkie, was attempting to rescue the dogs after noticing their deteriorating condition, left to die by their owners. Fortner was also working to find them permanent homes, officials said.
Deputies from the Saline County Sheriff's Office said they were alerted to the attack around 12:15 p.m. Wednesday and arrived to find the teen already dead. With the assistance of Benton Animal Services, deputies seized multiple dogs from the property.
Dogs were a Mix of Pitbulls, Pitbull Crossbreeds, and Hounds; 14 of Them Euthanized in the Wake of the Attack
The dogs were a mix of pit bulls, pit bull crossbreeds, and hounds, Benton Animal Services spokesperson Matt Thibault told the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. Officials told the newspaper that 14 dogs were euthanized in the wake of the incident. Investigators said they are looking into how the "sudden and tragic" attack unfolded.
For months, neighbors had complained about how out of control the problem with the pack of dogs had become — with many reporting to Saline County officials that they would sometimes run loose throughout the area.
However, county officials had told upset residents on multiple occasions that there was nothing they could do. The Saline County Sheriff's Office is now investigating the incident with the assistance of Benton animal control.
Fortner Remembered as 'The Kindest Soul'
Fortner, a high schooler at Bryant Public Schools, is remembered as a "beautiful, bright girl with the kindest soul," a GoFundMe set up for the 15-year-old revealed.
"Her smile could light up a room, and her laughter was the kind that made others feel instantly at ease," the fundraising page reads."She is deeply loved by her family, friends, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing her."

Who is Brandon Keith Mitchell? Convicted Sex Offender's Viral Gay Surrogacy Video Sparks Concerns About Pennsylvania's Adoption Laws
A viral video of a gay couple celebrating their surrogacy journey has sparked outrage after it emerged that one of the men is a convicted sex offender who obtained custody of a newborn baby by taking advantage of a legal loophole that bypasses adoption restrictions. Brandon Keith Mitchell, who appears in the widely shared video with his husband Logan Riley and their infant son, is a Tier 1 sex offender in Pennsylvania who was convicted in 2016 for the sexual exploitation of a minor whilst working as a high school chemistry teacher. The Viral Surrogacy Celebration Video The couple's video, originally posted to showcase their "surrogacy journey," gained widespread attention after being reposted on 27 July by Irish activist Derek Blighe on X, amassing more than a million views on the platform. Less than 24 hours of the video going viral, investigative reporting by Reduxx confirmed that Mitchell is a registered sex offender. The revelation sparked outrage in the comments section, with viewers expressing their disbelief over how a convicted sex offender was allowed to adopt a child. "How does this even happen? the adoption agency doesn't have google?" wrote one user, while another commented, "He's a sex offender and he can't be near a child." "Someone rescue that child," opined a third user. Mitchell was Convicted Over Sexual Misconduct with a 16-Year-Old Male Student at a School Where He was Employed as a Teacher According to records from the Chester County District Attorney's Office and Downingtown Police Department, Mitchell was arrested on 3 February 2016 after a months-long investigation into his conduct with a 16-year-old male student at Downingtown West High School. The investigation revealed that Mitchell, then 30, had exchanged over 12,000 text messages with the victim between May 2013 and December 2014. Police found that Mitchell had solicited nude photographs from the student, sent approximately 20 nude photographs of himself, and told the victim he wanted to watch him engage in sexual acts. "Police also recovered hundreds of other sexually explicit videos of the child on Mitchell's laptop computer," according to court documents. Mitchell was charged with multiple felonies including possession of child pornography, sexual abuse of children, endangering the welfare of children, and corruption of minors. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to up to 23 months of incarceration, though court records show he was granted parole just two months after conviction. Mitchell Hid His Criminal History Following his conviction, Mitchell was required to surrender his teaching licence and prohibited from unsupervised contact with minors. He subsequently obtained employment as a chemist at Eurofins BioPharma Product Testing in Lancaster, where he has worked for nine years. In 2021, Mitchell married Logan Riley, a second-grade teacher from Maryland. The couple launched a GoFundMe in 2023 to raise money for surrogacy, with Mitchell advertising the fundraiser on his LinkedIn profile. The fundraising page, which raised just over $2,000) of their $50,000) goal, made no mention of Mitchell's criminal history or sex offender status. "My name is Logan and I am a 2nd grade teacher," the GoFundMe description read. "My fiancé's name is Brandon and he works in a pharmaceutical laboratory... He values family and friends and he is excited to start our new family." How did Mitchell Manage to Bypass the Adoption Laws? Pennsylvania State Police confirmed to Reduxx that whilst the state's adoption laws prohibit sex offenders from adopting or fostering children, gestational surrogacy arrangements circumvent these protections through pre-birth parentage orders. Pennsylvania is considered a "surrogate-friendly" state where intended parents can obtain pre-birth orders during the surrogate's second trimester, declaring them as legal parents and placing their names on the birth certificate without undergoing the screening required for adoption. "The state does not automatically forbid individuals convicted of sex crimes from having children, gaining custody, or exercising parental rights," Pennsylvania State Police confirmed. It remains unclear whether the surrogate was informed of Mitchell's sex offender status before agreeing to the arrangement.

Farm worker dies after US immigration raid in California

CAMARILLO, United States - A farm worker has died after being injured during a raid by US immigration agents on a legal cannabis farm in California, his family said on July 12. Raids on agricultural sites on July 10 resulted in the arrests of 200 undocumented migrants , as part of US President Donald Trump's wide-ranging anti-immigration crackdown, and clashes between law enforcement officials and protesters. The farm worker's family had started a page on the fundraising platform Gofundme to help support his relatives in Mexico. On July 12, the page posted an update to say he had 'passed away.' Mr Trump campaigned for the presidency on a harsh anti-immigration platform, likening undocumented migrants to 'animals' and 'monsters', and since taking office he has delivered on promises to conduct a massive deportation drive. On July 11, he called demonstrators involved in attacks on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents 'slimeballs' and said they should be arrested. The chaotic raid on the cannabis plantation in Ventura County, about 90km from Los Angeles, saw the worker who later died being chased by ICE agents, his family said. 'My uncle Jaime was just a hard-working, innocent farmer,' said a post on the Gofundme page. 'He was chased by ICE agents, and we were told he fell 30ft (9m).' Top stories Swipe. Select. Ms Tricia McLaughlin, a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spokeswoman, said he was never in custody. 'Although he was not being pursued by law enforcement, this individual climbed up to the roof of a green house and fell 30 feet,' Ms McLaughlin said. '(Customs and Border Patrol) immediately called a medevac to the scene to get him care as quickly as possible.' DHS said 200 undocumented migrants were arrested during raids on marijuana growing sites in Carpinteria and Camarillo on July 10 and 10 children were rescued 'from potential exploitation, forced labour, and human trafficking'. Glass House Brands, which owns the farms, said in a statement that it has 'never knowingly violated applicable hiring practices and does not and has never employed minors'. DHS said more than 500 'rioters' had attempted to disrupt the operation and four US citizens are facing charges for assaulting or resisting officers. Tear gas was used against the protesters, some of whom were seen in television footage throwing projectiles at law enforcement vehicles. The department said immigration agency vehicles were damaged and a US$50,000 (S$64,000) reward was being offered for the arrest of an individual who allegedly fired a gun at law enforcement officers. American dream 'no longer' In a post on his Truth Social platform, Mr Trump said he had watched footage of 'thugs' throwing rocks and bricks at ICE vehicles, causing 'tremendous damage'. Mr Trump said he was authorising law enforcement officers who are 'on the receiving end of thrown rocks, bricks, or any other form of assault, to stop their car, and arrest these SLIMEBALLS, using whatever means is necessary to do so'. 'I am giving Total Authorization for ICE to protect itself, just like they protect the Public,' he said. Mr Trump has been involved in a showdown over immigration enforcement with Democratic-ruled California for weeks. The Republican president sent thousands of National Guard troops to Los Angeles in June to quell protests against round-ups of undocumented migrants by federal agents. California Governor Gavin Newsom has said the troops were not necessary to address the mostly peaceful protests, but his legal efforts to have them removed have failed so far. The cannabis farm in Camarillo was calm during a visit by an AFP reporter on July 11, as workers waited in line to collect their belongings and pay cheques. 'We've been here since six this morning asking questions but they're not giving us any information,' said Mr Saul Munoz, a 43-year-old Colombian whose son was detained on July 10. 'I just want to know how he's doing,' Mr Munoz said. 'Bring him back to me and if it's time for us to leave, we'll leave. 'The truth is the American dream is no longer really the American dream.' AFP
