Suneel Darshan opens up on Karisma Kapoor's 'abrupt' marriage to Sunjay Kapur, saying she didn't fit into Delhi culture and became a 'trophy' for the family.
Filmmaker Suneel Darshan, who has worked closely with Karisma Kapoor, has opened up about her marriage to businessman Sunjay Kapur, calling it 'abrupt." Speaking to journalist Vickey Lalwani on his YouTube channel, Darshan reflected on Karisma's personal life, her bond with Sunjay's family, and how her life changed after the wedding.
When asked if he reached out to Karisma after Sunjay Kapur's recent passing, Darshan responded with warmth and empathy. 'We've exchanged this thing… I've known the issue too deeply. Right from the first day, I've known exactly," he said, recalling how Karisma was best friends with Sunjay Kapur's sister since childhood. 'Some things just need to be buried," he added, hinting at Karisma's tumultuous married life.
The Abrupt End of Karisma Kapoor-Abhishek Bachchan, and Sudden Marriage
Darshan described both Karisma's breakup with Abhishek Bachchan and her wedding to Sanjay Kapur as sudden. 'I thought it was an abrupt decision… something had to do with the stars — not film stars — the stars," he said. He also suggested that the marriage may have followed the emotional aftermath of her broken engagement. 'One didn't know what it was… she was never seen as a couple with Sanjay before. Some things are destined to happen."
Karisma Wanted to Be a Homemaker, Not a Socialite
Darshan recalled how Karisma had envisioned a homely life post-marriage. 'She wanted to be a domesticated wife… She wasn't the kind who wanted to go play golf on a Saturday. She wanted to spend time at home," he shared. He described Karisma as someone grounded despite her stardom. She was 'a nice girl, a very nice girl like that… it's very sad."
'She Became a Trophy for the Family'
Darshan didn't mince words when asked if Karisma had become a 'trophy wife' for Sanjay's family. 'I think that was where the problem came. That's what I heard," he said. 'She was placed into a world which was not hers. Delhi has its own culture and she wasn't fitting into it."
Despite her fame, Darshan said Karisma was never pretentious and came from a legacy rooted in simplicity, being Raj Kapoor's granddaughter and a former No.1 heroine. But in her new life, 'she was in this palatial house with endless cars… and it just wasn't her world."
Karisma Kapoor's ex-husband, Sunjay Kapur, passed away in June 2025. His death was attributed to a heart attack, possibly triggered by a bee sting during a polo match in the UK. Sunjay Kapur and Karisma Kapoor were married from 2003 to 2016. They have two kids together.

Suniel Shetty's daughter rebuked him for commenting about C-sections and getting into trouble: ‘Papa, why did you talk?'

Suniel Shetty recently faced trolling after a few politically incorrect statements of his went viral on social media. He had lauded his daughter Athiya Shetty for giving birth naturally and avoiding C-section surgery. He had also insinuated that a 'husband should build the career and the wife should take care of kids.' Now, in a recent interaction, Suniel admitted that Athiya keeps a close eye on his statements and often rebukes him for saying something inappropriate. Speaking to Zoom, Suniel admitted, 'I avoid controversial questions during promotional activities. I'm the kind of person who sometimes wants to answer, and then I mess up. And then I have Athiya at home saying, 'Papa, why did you talk? Just say no comment!' She keeps reminding me not to say anything that could get us into trouble the next day. She tracks all my interviews, and honestly, that's the only person I fear. The best thing for a man to have is a baby girl in his life.' In an earlier interaction with News18, Suniel had lauded Athiya's strength for giving birth to her and KL Rahul's daughter Evaarah Vipula Rahul. He said, 'In a world where everybody wants the comfort of having a caesarean baby, she chose not to do that and had a natural delivery. I remember how every nurse and paediatrician in the hospital said that it's unbelievable how she went through the whole process. That hit me as a father. I was like, 'Wow, she's ready!' Athiya was very, very strong to do that.' In another controversial statement, Suniel said that men and women should stick to their traditional roles. He told Pinkvilla, 'Marriage after a while becomes a compromise where you have to understand each other. Then a child comes into the picture, and the wife needs to understand that if the husband is building his career, she will need to take care of the child. Of course, the husband will also be involved. But these days, there is just too much pressure in everything.' Suniel's statements landed him in trouble, with trolls calling him 'misogynist.' On the work front, Suniel will next be seen in Welcome to the Jungle, alongside Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal, Sanjay Dutt, Arshad Warsi, Raveena Tandon, Lara Dutta, and others. His other highly-anticipated film, Hera Pheri 3, is back on track after a temporary fallout between Paresh Rawal and Akshay Kumar.

'Family legacy must not be lost': Sunjay Kapur's mother Rani Kapur amid ₹30,000 cr Sona Comstar dispute

Rani Kapur, mother of late businessman Sunjay Kapur, has broken her silence in a rare and emotional statement, calling for answers and urging that her family's legacy not be forgotten. Her remarks come amid an escalating dispute over control of the late industrialist's ₹ 30,000 crore business empire, a story that has drawn attention not only from the corporate world but also from Bollywood watchers. Sunjay Kapur, who was once married to actress Karisma Kapoor, was a well-known figure both in business and social circles. He passed away suddenly, and his mother says the circumstances around his death remain unclear. 'I still don't know what happened to my son,' Rani Kapur said in a statement to ANI. 'I may be old and frail now, but my memory of being with my husband when Sona [Comstar] was set up is strong.' The late industrialist served as chairman of the Gurugram-based auto components giant, Sona Comstar. Following his death, tensions have emerged within the Kapur family, with Rani Kapur alleging that certain family members have attempted to seize control of the company, a move she says goes against her husband's vision for their legacy. 'This company was built with care, sacrifice, and love,' she said. 'I am here to remind the world that our family legacy must not be lost.' The family feud has spilt into the public domain, shaking investor confidence. Shares of Sona Comstar have seen a decline, reflecting the growing concern around internal instability. In response, the company has issued an official statement distancing itself from Rani Kapur's claims. 'She is neither a shareholder, director, nor officer of the Company,' Sona Comstar said. 'As such, she has no locus standi on any matter related to the Company. Any insinuation that she was coerced into signing documents or that her consent is required for Company affairs is completely baseless and legally untenable.' Rani Kapur, citing her age and health, has stated she will not make any further public comments and that her legal team will handle all necessary matters.

Saiyaara Title Track Copied From One Direction's Night Changes? Tanishk Bagchi Says, 'Didn't Steal'

Tanishk Bagchi reacts to claims that Saiyaara sounds like a One Direction song. While Saiyaara continues to ride high on music charts around the world, its sudden success has come with a side of controversy. The emotional track, composed by Tanishk Bagchi, has not only grabbed the No. 4 spot on Spotify's Top Global chart but also recently topped the Viral Top 50 list – making it one of the most talked-about songs right now. But as the praise pours in, so do whispers of similarity. Listeners online have pointed out parts of the tune that, they say, resemble One Direction's Night Changes and Jubin Nautiyal's Humnava Mere. Tanishk, however, isn't too bothered by the comparisons. 'Whatever I do, people will have something to say because they don't have [anything better to do]. They keep on looking for opportunities to put me down. But ultimately, the song will go wherever it's destined to, and that's what's happening with Saiyaara too," he said in a chat with India Today. He addressed the criticism directly, explaining that musical overlaps don't mean something was copied. 'As for the comparisons, if you look at the melody, the chords are the same. The A minor scale has just about 3-4 chords but every melody has a different soul. That doesn't mean that anything was stolen. Even if you can do that, it's really difficult to make it a hit." Doubling down on his stance, Bagchi added, 'All said and done, we didn't steal anything. The similarities are fine, it can happen, but it's not like we did it on purpose. Idhar se utha ke udhar nahi kiya (we didn't pick and add anything). We worked on the emotion of the song, and that worked. That's the magic of the track 'Saiyaara'." In an exclusive chat with News18 Showsha, Tanishk said he looks forward to composing an international track soon that helps him get his rightful share of royalties. 'Jaise international artists ko milta hai, humein nahi milta unless you own the publishing rights. The rights of the title track of Saiyaara isn't with me. It's with the music label. I'll only get so much money. I try to not bother myself because it is what it is. But when I make an international song in the future, I know that I'll earn in billions. I'm waiting for that moment," he said. First Published: July 29, 2025, 09:49 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive.
