This week has been a rough one for the Cincinnati Bengals publicly.
Bengals executive vice president Katie Blackburn had comments about the upcoming stadium lease in downtown being blown out of proportion, prompting a response from big names in the county.
Before all that, though, Blackburn's comments about the Trey Hendrickson saga earned the ire of many fans -- before the star defensive end took to a public interview himself to respond.
Given the state of things right now between the Bengals and Hendrickson, it doesn't seem likely that a contract extension of any sort will happen soon.
In the meantime, Bengals fans themselves have had plenty to say on the topic as the standoff between the team and Hendrickson got public and messy in a hurry:
Katie Blackburn single-handedly shut down trade talks on Trey Hendrickson.
Then the backhand comments about Trey's worth on the team, which more than likely seal and deal that Trey WILL NOT get a deal. Bold strategy, Katie. 🤦‍♂️😒 #RuleTheJungle pic.twitter.com/NU2PHkapKG — $Ritchie$ (@WhoDeyRitchie) April 3, 2025
Trey Hendrickson and Andrew Whitworth have basically just given the exact same interview about dealing with the Blackburns when you turn 30. — SteveGantzrrrr (@StevenGantzer) April 2, 2025

Dude is all class playing at a high level yet we still can't get it figured out. Maddening is the word that comes to mind. Let's get it resolved ASAP. — Crypto dude 21 (@Cryptodude211) April 2, 2025
Hendrickson is an elite edge rusher trying to cash in for likely the last time in his career and, from all reports, has been an absolutely tremendous teammate and leader.
And the Bengals defense is non-functional without him.
As fans, this is not enjoyable to watch play out. — Gridiron Grading (@GridironGrading) April 2, 2025

Shemar Stewart, Bengals are still at impasse

The Bengals and their 2025 first-round pick, defensive end Shemar Stewart, continue to be at odds over a fairly technical and esoteric portion of his contract. Stewart's agent, Zac Hiller, appeared on SiriusXM NFL Radio to discuss the situation. 'Obviously my job, and all agents' job, is to protect the players,' Hiller said. 'Simply put, Shamar would, of course, love for his contract to be as protective as the rest of his Bengals teammates in the past. And, simply put, the way the contract currently reads is not as protective.' The issue relates to the team's effort to change the language that would void future guarantees. They're trying to foist more team-friendly terms on Stewart unilaterally, without making a corresponding concession. 'Contracts are based on precedent,' Hiller said. 'So, when Shamar has never asked for anything more or less protective than any of his teammates, it's a simple fix. It's just say, 'Hey, this is the precedent. Let's keep the precedent.'' There's no indication that the Bengals are willing to offer Stewart anything to balance out the change in precedent. 'If you want to make changes to your precedent, it should be a negotiation,' Hiller said. 'It should be give and take. It shouldn't just be, 'Hey, we're changing this and sign it or go scratch.'' Although Stewart is taking a stand, he wants to get the situation resolved. 'All he wants to do is be a Cincinnati Bengal,' Hiller said. 'This guy was so excited to get drafted by Cincinnati. All he wants to do is be a Bengal. All he wanted to do was be on the field and show the Cincinnati fans the incredible specimen, person, football player that this team was lucky to draft where they drafted. And he's not been allowed to do that.' This isn't the year for the Bengals to become stubborn about changing contract language that previously was acceptable. They need Stewart to be ready to go — especially if defensive end Trey Hendrickson doesn't show up for training camp as part of a cash-based contract squabble. But if the team and Hendrickson strike a deal as to money, there's an interesting question that will eventually be addressed. Will the Bengals use their prior language regarding voids of guarantees? Or will they insist on the same language they're trying to force Stewart to accept?

Bengals 'Low-Balling' Trey Hendrickson at $28 Million as Trade Rumors Swirl

Bengals 'Low-Balling' Trey Hendrickson at $28 Million as Trade Rumors Swirl originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Another day, another Trey Hendrickson trade rumor. Also ... another day, another hint that the Cincinnati Bengals are insisting on sitting on their hands when it comes to their superstar edge rusher. Advertisement Hendrickson remains embroiled in a nasty contract dispute as he is seeking a pricey extension. How much? We'll get to that in a moment. More immediately, we know for a fact that every media outlet in 31 NFL cities has tried to engineer a way to move him from the "cheap'' Bengals to their fair berg. The latest? The Chicago Bears are being suggested as a landing spot, with Chicago's Pete Martuneac pushing for the move. "He may be on the wrong side of 30, but Hendrickson is coming off back-to-back seasons of 17 or more sacks. That kind of production can't be ignored and would provide a mammoth shot in the arm for Chicago's pass rush unit," he wrote. Advertisement But the writer added, "This could be a potentially difficult trade to pull off since Hendrickson is looking for a big payday and Chicago is light on salary cap space.'' Oh. Yeah, if a prospective new team isn't going to pay Hendrickson, who insists he refuses to play on his present $21 million deal? He's probably not getting traded to that prospective new team. Hendrickson, who has essentially labeled the Bengals as liars, has apparently recently visited with the front office. ESPN's Adam Schefter said, "I think there is a disagreement over value and I think most important, there's a disagreement on length here. Length of deal, I think that's also an issue here. The Bengals would like a shorter deal, Hendrickson would like a longer deal. And they can't even find common ground on the length of the deal right now.' Advertisement So, Schefter thinks the two sides can't agree on value and can't agree on length? That's like ... everything. Meanwhile, the last Bengals number reported regarding an offer to Hendrickson would pay him about $28 million annually. Two things there: One, if the team acknowledges that the four-time Pro Bowler deserves a raise, that's a low-ball number. And two, that "latest report'' is a month old ... Suggesting that Cincy isn't budging. The superstar edge guys now get in excess of $30 million APY. That's got to be the ground floor here. Hendrickson will turn 31 in December, so even as a 17-sacks-per-year guy, this doesn't have to be a tremendously long contract. Advertisement But what does have to happen in the coming weeks is movement on a realistic offer or a realistic trading of Hendrickson. Bengals Players Confirm Embarrassing Grades From NFLPA Survey

Bengals Players Confirm Embarrassing Grades From NFLPA Survey originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The NFL Players Association gave the Cincinnati Bengals the lowest grade in the league when it comes to its treatment of families. A new story by ESPN is amplifying an explaining the criticisms. Advertisement Players talked to ESPN under the condition of anonymity, And the story deducts that the Bengals' operation is "(bleep) show for the family dynamic." Ouch. "They have that tent out there, but it's a (bleep) show and it's cold and it's not inside," one player said about the postgame meeting area for families at the stadium. The Bengals did indeed only provide an outdoor tent for post-game family gatherings in 2023, but last year - and moving forward - the meeting area was moved inside Paycor Stadium. Another player cited the team forcing families to wait in long public lines without players being there to protect and guide them. Advertisement "Just different things where they can make it more convenient for our families, especially when the husband's not there," the unnamed player told ESPN. "We're worried about them. I think it would be easier for us if we had certain things for families ... we don't have to worry about it." The player complaints seem justified, coming off the embarrassing "F-minus" grade the NFLPA slapped on the Bengals in February's annual survey. Cincinnati ranked 24th overall on the report card.
