Driver on mushrooms goes ‘pedal to the metal' in wreck that kills 2, OR officials say
A driver accused of causing a fatal wreck while high on psychedelic mushrooms and 'going pedal to the metal' was convicted of manslaughter in Oregon, officials said.
Fullington William Frazer III, now 23, sped up to almost 60 mph as he neared an intersection in Milwaukie on Dec. 30, 2023, the Clackamas County District Attorney's Office said in an April 1 news release. Frazer ran a red light and hit two cars, including a Subaru driven by 37-year-old Fleetwood Mars Mozee, prosecutors said.
Mozee was killed, and so was Frazer's passenger and roommate, Mitchell Scott Barr, officials said. Barr, 24, was thrown from Frazer's car, according to prosecutors.
A Clackamas County jury found Frazer guilty of two counts of first-degree manslaughter, plus reckless driving, driving under the influence of intoxicants, and two counts each of fourth-degree assault and recklessly endangering another person, prosecutors said.
McClatchy News reached out to his attorneys April 2 and was awaiting a response.
In court, Deputy District Attorney Chelsea Jones said a state trooper described the wreck as 'one of the most destructive' he'd seen, per the news release.
Frazer 'was going pedal to the metal,' Jones is quoted as saying.
After the wreck, 'Frazer exhibited bizarre behavior,' including saying 'I just want the love' when asked if he was in need of medical assistance, prosecutors said.
'No remorse'
At the hospital, he didn't remember that Barr had been in his car, and when he was informed that two people were killed, 'he asked, 'Are they okay?'' per the release.
In jail days later, Frazer 'appeared to show no remorse and laughed when talking about his deceased roommate,' according to prosecutors.
Frazer was driving Barr to the grocery store when the wreck happened, prosecutors said.
Psilocybin mushrooms were found in Frazer's system, according to prosecutors.
Two other people also were hurt in the wreck, prosecutors said.
Victims mourned
Barr, who trained as a firefighter, 'was fearless, never without a sense of adventure,' an online obituary said. He loved Tarzan as a boy and Batman as an adult, the obituary said, noting that 'he would even wash dishes in a Batman cape and answer his phone with a Batman voice.'
Barr 'felt at peace with the lost' and helped people work toward recovery, the obituary said.
He 'was loving and protective of his' siblings and 'was a brother to anyone who needed one,' according to the obituary, which said his loved ones 'will miss him more than words can say.'
Mozee worked as a veterans services specialist in Multnomah County, prosecutors said.
A native of Alberta, Canada, Mozee 'was particularly impactful in assisting LGBTQIA+ veterans and survivors of military sexual assault and trauma in receiving needed support' while working in Oregon, according to an online tribute. Mozee was described in the tribute as 'a community builder' with a 'warm and welcoming presence' that 'will be deeply missed.'
Frazer is scheduled to be sentenced in May, prosecutors said.
Milwaukie is about a 10-mile drive south from Portland.

‘Disturbing': NYC lawmakers seek investigation into NYPD-ICE collaboration
Editor's note: The video above aired in a previous newscast. NEW YORK (PIX11) – New York City Council members are urging the Department of Investigations (DOI) to investigate whether the NYPD is sharing information with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Speaker Adrienne Adams, Council Member Gale Brewer, and Commissioner Jocelyn E. Strauber have requested the DOI investigate the NYPD's alleged collaboration with federal authorities. They are concerned that civil immigration enforcement may violate local laws. More Local News 'In recent days, we've witnessed masked agents of the Trump administration detain people following the law targeting our neighbors,' Speaker Adams said in a video posted to her X account. 'This is not about public safety; it makes us less safe. Reports that NYPD collaboration and information shared with federal agencies are being used in civil immigration proceedings are disturbing.' Adams also pointed out that sharing information with ICE for immigration enforcement violates New York City law since New York is a sanctuary city: a sanctuary city limits or declines to cooperate with the federal government's immigration law enforcement. In a press conference on Monday, NYPD Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the force does not engage in civil immigration enforcement. In an email to PIX11 News, a spokesperson for the NYPD issued the following statement: 'The NYPD does not engage in civil immigration enforcement, period. As it has for many years, the NYPD works with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies on criminal investigations, including work on federal criminal task forces. That work is critical to getting dangerous individuals out of our communities, protecting our city from terrorism, and keeping our families safe.' Since January, the department has been under fire for working with ICE agents to 'go after criminals.' In May, the NYPD gave federal immigration authorities an internal record about a Palestinian woman arrested at a protest, now used by the Trump administration as evidence to deport her, according to court documents obtained by The Associated Press. Rex Heuermann ‘most likely' is the alleged Gilgo Beach killer, daughter says
Editor's note: The video above aired in a previous newscast. LONG ISLAND (PIX11) – The daughter of Rex Heuermann announced through her lawyer on Tuesday afternoon that her father, 'most likely,' is the alleged Gilgo Beach killer. Heuermann's daughter, Victoria, states that after reviewing the information and having it explained to her, she was able to process it and form her own opinion that her father is most likely the Gilgo Beach serial killer. More Crime News Bob Macedino, the family's lawyer, also noted that Asa (Heuermann's wife), on the other hand, believes that Rex, the father of her children and her ex-husband of 27 years, is incapable of committing these horrific acts. Rex Heuermann, 61, an architect from Massapequa Park, is accused of killing multiple people in the Gilgo Beach serial killings. Heuermann grew up on Long Island and has lived in Massapequa Park his entire life, according to News 12 Long Island. Heuermann is married and has two children. The family home is situated across a bay from where the remains were discovered. Heuermann is charged with killing multiple people whose remains were found on Long Island. He has pleaded not guilty to all the charges. Heuermann is believed to have used a burner phone to contact his victims, according to court documents. He used Tinder under an alias, according to court documents. Documents also said an email account associated with one of the burner phones associated with Heuermann was used to search for sex workers, torture-related pornography, and other illicit forms of pornography. Although Heuermann has been charged with the murders of seven women dating back to the 1990s, he has not yet been found guilty and is currently still on trial on Long Island. Kids left alone in hot car that reached 104 degrees, GA cops say. Man charged
Two children were left alone in a sweltering car outside an Atlanta shopping mall, and now a man is charged, Georgia police said. The man was arrested on two counts of second-degree child cruelty in the June 4 incident at Cumberland Mall, authorities wrote in a criminal warrant obtained by McClatchy News. Attorney information for the man wasn't immediately available. Officers were called to the parking lot just before 1 p.m. after a witness spotted the youngsters in a car by themselves and called 911, WSB-TV reported, citing the Cobb County Sheriff's Office. Authorities said the kids were in the car with no air conditioning for at least 41 minutes. Temperatures in Atlanta reached 80 degrees that day, according to AccuWeather, and authorities said the car's internal temperature hit triple digits. 'An infrared thermometer displayed the temperature of 104 degrees where said victim was sitting in,' according to the affidavit. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advised that cracking a window isn't enough to stay cool in the warmer months, as 'temperatures inside the car can rise almost 20 degrees Fahrenheit within the first 10 minutes.' Authorities didn't give an update on the children's conditions or say if or how they're related to the man who was arrested. McClatchy News reached out to the Cobb County Sheriff's Office for more information June 10 and was awaiting a response. The man was taken to the Cobb County Adult Detention Center and released June 6 after posting an $11,220 bond, online records show.
