Kamada hits double as Japan thrash Indonesia

The Sun11-06-2025
Crystal Palace forward Daichi Kamada scored twice as Japan rounded off their successful World Cup qualifying campaign with a 6-0 thrashing of Patrick Kluivert's Indonesia in Osaka on Tuesday.
Kamada, an FA Cup winner with Palace in England this season, struck twice in the first half as already qualified Japan finished the campaign as Group C winners, scoring 30 goals in their 10 matches.
Takefusa Kubo, Ryoya Morishita, Shuto Machino and substitute Mao Hosoya were also on target against Indonesia, who finished fourth in the group.
Kluivert's side, who were backed by a large travelling support in Japan, advance to a further round with five other teams to decide two more Asian qualifiers for next year's tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Japan lost their unbeaten qualifying record in a 1-0 defeat away to Australia last week, with coach Hajime Moriyasu fielding an experimental line-up with qualification already in the bag.
He started with two more debutants against Indonesia, handing first caps to defender Junnosuke Suzuki and winger Shunsuke Mito.
Kamada opened the scoring in the 15th minute, heading home from a Mito cross.
The Palace forward turned provider for his team's second, combining with Kubo before the Real Sociedad man fired past Indonesia goalkeeper Emil Audero.
Indonesia lost defender Kevin Diks to injury midway through the first half and his replacement Yakob Sayuri lasted only 15 minutes before he also had to go off after a clash of heads.
Kamada scored Japan's third on the stroke of half-time, waltzing through the Indonesia defence before tucking the ball over Audero.
Morishita volleyed home at the back post in the 55th minute for his first international goal.
Machino and Hosoya also got on the scoresheet as Japan continued to squeeze Indonesia until the final whistle.

Soccer-Chelsea need central defender after Colwill injury, says Maresca

(Reuters) -Chelsea are weighing up their options to address a defensive gap after centre back Levi Colwill suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, manager Enzo Maresca said ahead of their opening Premier League match against Crystal Palace on Sunday. Colwill picked up the injury in training and has undergone successful surgery, with the 22-year-old England international expected to miss much of the new season. It typically takes some six to nine months for a player to recover from an ACL injury and return to action, leaving Chelsea without a key figure in their backline. "He is okay but aware that he has to be a long time out," Maresca told reporters on Friday. "It's a big loss for us. He was so important for us last season. We are able to create chances and attack in the right way if we are able to build in the right way. Levi was a huge part of that. "The club know exactly what I am thinking. I think we need a central defender, but we are also looking for an internal solution." Chelsea are looking to build on last season's success after finishing fourth in the Premier League and winning the Club World Cup by beating European champions Paris St Germain in July. With the close-season transfer window closing on September 1 for Premier League clubs, Maresca was not ruling out further incomings at Stamford Bridge. The West London club have been active in the transfer market, signing Joao Pedro, Jamie Gittens, Jorrel Hato, Liam Delap, Estevao Willian, among others. "We have a fantastic squad. We are happy with the squad we have, no doubt. When the transfer window is open, anything can happen," the Italian, who will enter his second season at Chelsea, said. "We are a better team compared to one year ago because we worked together every day for one season." Maresca was wary of Palace, who stunned Manchester City to win the FA Cup in May and reigning Premier League champions Liverpool in the FA Community Shield earlier this month. "Very difficult. They beat in two finals probably the two best teams in England over the last 10 or 15 years," he said. (Reporting by Pearl Josephine Nazare in Bengaluru; editing by Pritha Sarkar)

Coman close to a move to Al-Nassr but no change on Woltemade transfer, says Bayern

FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - Club World Cup - Group C - Bayern Munich v Auckland City - TQL Stadium, Cincinnati, Ohio, U.S. - June 15, 2025 Bayern Munich's Kingsley Coman celebrates scoring their fourth goal REUTERS/Kai Pfaffenbach/File Photo MUNICH, Germany -Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman is close to joining Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr, with talks in the final stages, the German champions said on Friday ahead of Saturday's German SuperCup atVfB Stuttgart. They said, however, there was no development in the ongoing transfer saga of Stuttgart forward Nick Woltemade. The 29-year-old Coman, a 2022 World Cup finalist with France, has been at Bayern for a decade, havingwon a slew of domestic and international titles, including the Champions League and the Club World Cup. "There are still final talks pending,so it is not a done deal just yet," Bayern sports director Christoph Freund told a press conference. "But should it go ahead, then he was here 10 years, he won many titles, and was a super person." For coach Vincent Kompany, Coman's imminent departure may be emotional, coming shortly after club talisman Thomas Mueller's move to the Major League Soccer (MLS) side Vancouver Whitecaps after 25 years at Bayern, but his team was focused on the season start. "I think that King showed over the years at Bayern what player he was. When such a successful player leaves the club, it is always emotional," Kompany said. "I think for me it is important to look ahead, show respect for Kingsley Coman and for what he achievedfor the club. But my feeling is the lads who are here are the priority, and they have to work towards success." There was no change, however, in the status of 23-year-old Germany international Woltemade with Stuttgart having rejected the latest Bayern bid for the talented forward, who wants to join the German champions. "There has been so much talk about it, about deadlines, figures and so on," Freund said. "We have never commented on the matter. Thereis nothing new. Tomorrow he is playing for Stuttgartwhere he is under contract and it does not make sense to restart any speculation." The Bundesliga season starts next Friday with Bayern hosting RB Leipzig. Zii Jia shows he is fit ahead of world meet in Paris

PETALING JAYA: Lee Zii Jia is back. The independent men's singles shuttler looks set for the World Championships in Paris from Aug 25-31. In a video posted on his social media, the former Asian champion, dressed in pink, was seen unleashing several jumping smashes, signalling that his right ankle is on the mend. Zii Jia picked up a serious injury during the World Tour Finals last December. His attempted comeback at the Orleans Masters and All-England in March only aggravated the problem, forcing him to apply for a protected ranking from the Badminton World Federation (BWF). The Paris outing will be his first competition in five months. The former world No. 2 will begin his campaign against South Korea's Jeon Hyeok-jin in the first round. Malaysia's challenge in the men's singles will also feature Leong Jun Hao, who takes on Switzerland's Tobias Kuenzi in his opener.
