Varanasi: Improved connectivity in the city during eight-year regime of Chief Minister
Yogi Adityanath
has now started yielding positive results, especially in tourism sector. Tourist footfall crossed 8.94-crore mark in 2023 and exceeded 11 crores in 2024.
A massive rise of number was evident in arrival of foreigners too.
Deputy director (tourism) Rajendra Kumar Rawat said number of domestic and foreign tourists visiting Varanasi was 8,94,73,626 in 2023, which increased to over 11,00,97,743 in 2024, an increase of approximately 18.73% in number of domestic and foreign tourists and 18.68% increase in domestic tourists. Compared to 2023, there was an increase of 20,516,082 Indian tourists in 2024, while the number of foreign tourists increased by 108,035.
People associated with tourism sector feel projection of the city as 'Brand Banaras' made such an impact on the international tourism map in past eight years that tourists from around the world were increasingly drawn to Kashi. Yogi govt rapidly transformed Kashi's appearance, restoring its ancient glory. Kashi became modern while retaining its historical significance. As Kashi changed its image, world was drawn to Banaras.
Industry people said development works required to boost tourism in Kashi weren't seen before the Yogi era. There has been significant improvement in Kashi's law and order, connectivity (road, rail, air) and basic facilities. They added that after changing atmosphere in the state, inauguration of the Kashi Vishwanath Dham corridor with added facilities by Prime Minister Narendra Modi did wonders. Renovation of ghats, cleanliness and modern amenities attracted tourists, leading to continuous record increase in number of tourists in Kashi.
Influx of tourists to Varanasi had been increasing steadily over past few years. Along with setting a record in tourist numbers, there is positive impact on tourism industry and Kashi's economy. In 2024, number of Indian and foreign tourists increased by 2,06,24,117 compared to 2023, with a 34.85% increase in foreign tourists, said Rawat.

Mukesh Ambani plans big, new move involves Laapataa Ladies, Article 370 and..., aims to become...

Mukesh Ambani (File) Mukesh Ambani, Asia's richest man, owns highly-successful businesses ranging from oil, green energy, telecom to retail, media and entertainment. But now the billionaire tycoon has set his sights on something arguably more ambitious; carve a unique niche for Indian entertainment content in Hollywood via his Jio Studios– the country's largest content studio. Mukesh Ambani plans Hollywood takeover Last year, three films produced by Jio Studios– Laapataa Ladies, Article 370, and Shaitaan– were ranked on the top 10 global charts of Netflix, proof that Indian content now resonates beyond the diaspora audience across continents. Laapataa Ladies, which secured an Oscar nomination, was watched in more than 43 countries. However, Mukesh Ambani-owned Jio Studios has bigger ambitions; it aims to emerge as a prominent international studio in the next five years, and rub shoulders with Hollywood powerhouses like Paramount, Walt Disney, Peacock, Lionsgate, and MGM. 'Today, we are nowhere near Hollywood or even Korea. Somebody needs to take control and start. I want to use the Reliance heft to take Indian stories to the world,' Jyoti Deshpande, President (Media and Content Business), Reliance Industries, was quoted as saying by Fortune India. Deshpande revealed that the studios' ambitious expansion plan involves a 'combination of organic and inorganic collaborations', and one of the key goals to separate India rights and overseas rights, then hire a sales agent in key markets, in North America, Europe, and Australia. 'Currently, a digital platform takes away global rights, which limits international distribution country by country. We will then try to work that film from a Berlin or a Cannes, get a sales agent, and sell North America, Germany, France, and other parts of Europe—around 100-135 countries,' Deshpande told Fortune India. Jio Studios to build franchises Jio Studios will then try to give the movie a theatre release, and also later air it on local streaming services and TV channels in those markets. 'If I do this with a set of films, then our stories will start opening up into those markets.' Deshpande agrees that an expansion of this scale involves significant risk, but asserts that Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries is up to the challenge. 'Today, we are talking about India to the world. How can you make it happen by doing business the way we are currently doing? One will have to take significant risks, invest in the right stories that can travel, and take on international partners. I will be looking at co-producing some films internationally as well as inviting some international co-producers into my slate.' Additionally, Jyoti Deshpande wants to build global franchises of Jio Studios' titles and make them a part of pop culture, akin to what Hollywood does with its popular franchises like Star Wars, Harry Potter, The Matrix, Lord of The Rings, to name a few. 'We are already building franchises around Stree, Thama, Bhediya, and Munjya. We are also doing Mahaavatar, which is the story of Parasuram. This will be a big budget behemoth, and it will introduce characters,' Deshpande states.

This country hits jackpot as gold deposit worth Rs 6,678,000,000,000 discovered in…., it is world's.... Gold, often referred to as the yellow metal, is one of the most expensive and valuable metals in the world. China has made a groundbreaking discovery that could reshape its economic future. A massive gold deposit worth over £63 billion has been found beneath an existing mine. According to Beijing officials, the underground reserve is estimated to contain around 1,100 tonnes of gold, buried as deep as 9,800 feet below the surface, reported NavBharat Times Hindi. Furthermore, the report stated that the experts believe this could be the largest known deposit of any precious metal ever found. In addition, the quality of the yellow metal is expected to be exceptionally high. Valued at over £63 billion, this find is being hailed as a game-changer not just for China, but potentially for global gold markets as well. According to the current exchange rate (approximately £1 = Rs 106), £63 billion is equivalent to around Rs 6,678,000,000,000 — that is, Rs 6.68 lakh crore in Indian rupees. A team of Chinese geologists has reportedly discovered over 40 gold veins beneath the Wangu Gold Field in Pingjiang County, Hunan Province, containing around 330 tons of gold ore at a depth of approximately 6,600 feet. Advanced 3D geological modeling indicates that the deposit could stretch as deep as 9,800 feet, potentially holding up to 1,100 tons of gold. If these estimates are accurate, the total value of the reserve could reach an astounding $83 billion. The discovery contains 138 grams of gold per metric ton of ore, which is extremely rare and indicates very high-quality gold. As per NavBharat Times Hindi, Chen Rulin from the Geological Bureau of Hunan Province stated that this additional gold reserve was found in the drilled rock cores. He added that if the estimate of 1,100 tons holds true, it would become the largest gold mine in the world. At present, the record for the world's largest gold mine belongs to the South Deep mine in South Africa, which contains 1,025 tons of gold. Mines in Indonesia, Russia, New Guinea, and Chile are among the top five gold mines globally. The Carlin Trend and Cortez gold mines in Nevada rank sixth and tenth in the world, respectively. If China's new gold reserve is confirmed, it could give a significant boost to the country's economy. So far, the world has seen about 233,000 tons of gold mined in various forms, with two-thirds of it extracted since 1950. China has emerged as a major player in gold mining, and experts believe the country still holds many undiscovered gold deposits, the report mentioned. Today, China leads the global gold market, with its mining industry accounting for roughly 10% of the world's total gold production. China currently ranks sixth in the world for gold reserves, with about 2,264 tons of gold. In recent years, the country has been steadily increasing its reserves, and with the recent discovery of new deposits, China's gold holdings are expected to grow even more soon. At present, the United States holds the largest gold reserve globally. Meanwhile, India stands in ninth place in the world in terms of gold reserves.

GIFT Nifty sets all-time high monthly turnover of $102.35 billion in May 2025

GIFT Nifty, the leading derivative contract on the NSE International Exchange (NSE IX) at GIFT City, reached a record monthly turnover of $102.35 billion ( ₹ 8.75 lakh crore) in May 2025, setting a new benchmark for the platform. This figure exceeded the prior monthly peak of $100.93 billion achieved in April 2025. This exceeds its earlier peak of $100.93 billion, which was recorded in April 2025. Since beginning full-scale operations on July 3, 2023, GIFT Nifty has achieved a total turnover of $1.93 trillion, covering over 43.28 million contracts as of May 2025. 'We are glad to witness the success of GIFT Nifty and express our sincere gratitude to all the participants for their overwhelming support and making GIFT Nifty a successful contract,' NSE IX said in a statement. Indian retail investors are still unable to access GIFT Nifty through the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS). Under this scheme, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) prohibits using the annual $250,000 limit for leveraged trading, such as futures and options. However, Indian brokerages and their subsidiaries are allowed to onboard non-resident clients and wealthy Indian family offices. In addition to trading on their own behalf, they are permitted to execute trades for these clients. Established on June 5, 2017, NSE IX is a multi-asset international exchange located in GIFT City, functioning under the oversight of the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA). It dominates the market within GIFT IFSC with a market share exceeding 99%, offering a wide variety of instruments such as Indian single stock and index derivatives, currency derivatives, depository receipts, and global equities. The platform also supports the listing of various financial instruments, including equity shares, SPACs, REITs, InvITs, and ESG-linked debt instruments, all in accordance with IFSCA regulations. Both NSE IX and GIFT Nifty have received major regulatory approvals, including a Part 30 exemption from the CFTC and Class Relief from the SEC, enabling U.S.-based investors to trade derivative products on the platform.
