Has Crystal Palace's European demotion made Eberechi Eze a must-have player?

The Sun31-07-2025
EBERECHI EZE (£5.5m) will forever be a Crystal Palace hero.
The England international scored the winning goal against Manchester City in an FA Cup final to deliver the Eagles their first major trophy.

Dream Team managers have to put emotions and sentimentality aside when choosing their XI but even without intangible romances, Eze is an extremely tempting selection.
For the latest in our SCOUT REPORT series, we're seeking to establish whether the 27-year-old is worthy of his new-found status as one of the game's most expensive players.
At £5.5m, Eze is the joint-fifth most costly midfielder ahead of Gameweek 1 with only Bukayo Saka (£6.5m), Cole Palmer (£6m), Bruno Fernandes (£6m) and Florian Wirtz (£6m) commanding greater price tags.
The first reason for this is that he performed superbly last season.
Eze scored 15 goals and provided 11 assists on his way to 315 points, a tally bettered by just four players in his position.
4
He also ranked seventh for bonus points (46) among all assets, thanks to his impressive stats concerning successful dribbles, fouls won and goals scored from outside the box.
When all was said and done, Eze averaged 7.3 points-per-game in 2024/25.
HIGHEST POINTS-PER GAME AVERAGE AMONG DREAM TEAM MIDFIELDERS LAST SEASON (MINIMUM 5 APPEARANCES):
8 - Bryan Mbeumo
7.9 - Bruno Fernandes
7.7 - Cole Palmer
7.7 - Bukayo Saka
7.3 - Eberechi Eze
6.3 - Dwight McNeil
6.2 - Antoine Semenyo
6 - James Maddison
5.9 - Morgan Rogers
5.9 - Iliman Ndiaye
The second reason for Eze's punchy starting price is that his schedule will be enhanced by European commitments for the first time in his career.
The Selhurst Park faithful are understandably frustrated by their side's demotion from the Europa League to the Conference League because of Uefa's multi-club ownership rules but this harsh turn of events may actually create golden opportunities in the world of Dream Team.
4
Gaffers should be licking their lips at the prospect of Eze (plus Daniel Munoz, Philippe-Jean Mateta, etc) taking on some extremely favourable opponents in Europe's tertiary competition.
Chelsea players provided ample returns on Thursday nights last season on their way to Conference League glory.
Palace's No10 capitalised on his side's FA Cup success last term, taking plenty of points from the additional domestic fixtures from start to finish.
Even when he was on the wrong side of the fixture deficit, Eze was a viable Dream Team midfielder.
Favourable European commitments could make him a must-have asset for much of 2025/26.
4
The elephant in the room is that Eze has long been linked with a move away from Selhurst Park.
Arsenal are said to be keen admirers and should such a transfer materialise it would be interesting to see the impact on his Dream Team ownership, which is currently 10.6%.
A move to the Gunners would mean no favourable Conference League match-ups for Eze but his schedule would still be enhanced by Champions League commitments.
For now, he's a Palace player and seemingly well placed to produce another points-laden campaign.

Kansas City Chiefs heiresses Ava and Gracie Hunt flaunt expensive gameday outfits as NFL preseason kicks off

Kansas City Chiefs heiresses Ava and Gracie Hunt are ready for another season of football as they showed off their expensive gameday outfits during the start of the NFL 2025 preseason. The two are known for their enviable wardrobes, which consist of designer labels like Louis Vuitton, Christian Louboutin and Chanel. On Saturday, the Chiefs faced off in a preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals, which they lost by three points, the final score coming in at 20-17. But even with the loss, the Hunt ladies, whose dad is Chiefs owner Clark Hunt, were excited to get things moving again as they took to their respective Instagram pages to share some snaps from the day. Gracie, 26, started off her carousel by posting a photo of herself standing on the football field. She rocked a red knit set by designer Retrofête, which featured a $198 skirt with white scalloped detailing and gold buttons, along with a matching $198 halter top. Gracie topped off the gameday look with a pair of nude, Rockstud pumps from Valentino, which retail for $1,150. The influencer also included a few snaps with her family taken on the field, including mom Tavia Hunt, who was also decked out in Chiefs red for the game. 'CHIEFS FOOTBALL IS BACK!' Gracie wrote in the caption of her Instagram post. 'Grateful for a new season, the chance to chase dreams, and the beautiful game that brings us all together. Matthew 25:21. What game are you most excited about this season?' her message continued. Gracie's little sister, Ava, 20, who is a sophomore at Southern Methodist University in Texas, also shared snaps from the day on Instagram. She posed on the field wearing what appeared to be a $395 white leather mini dress by designer Alice + Olivia, which she paired with brown wedges. Ava shared similar family photos as her sister, and also included a video of the team warming up on the field. 'Football season is back! How we feelin' Chiefs Kingdom,' she typed in the caption. Last year, the team made it to the Super Bowl for the third year in a row, but ultimately lost to the Philadelphia Eagles. They took home the Lombardi trophy in 2024 and 2023. Gracie sported a pair of Valentino heels over $1,000 and a knit red halter top by designer Retrofête The team's star tight end is Travis Kelce, who is dating superstar Taylor Swift. Ava and Gracie come from a prominent family that is worth an estimated $20.5 billion, according to Forbes, and enjoy quite the opulent lifestyle that would give many A-listers a run for their money. Last year, Ava showcased some of the many pluses to her dad owning the Kansas City team - getting to mingle with pop sensation Taylor. Ava posted a picture that showed her and the Cruel Summer songstress posing together at the Chiefs game against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. The blonde beauties, both decked out in Chiefs gear, pressed their heads together as they smiled up at the camera. Taylor draped her arm lovingly over Ava's shoulder and clutched onto an enormous purple gift in her other hand, which contained a note that said, 'To: Taylor. From: The Hunt Family.' The sweet snap quickly went viral and only launched Ava even further into social media stardom.

Manchester United fan group postpones protest against Sir Jim Ratcliffe

A Manchester United supporters' group has postponed a demonstration against the club's ownership planned for the day of their opening game of the Premier League season. The 1958 had organised a protest march to Old Trafford on August 17, ahead of United's clash with Arsenal, with banners referring to minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. The 1958 has overseen numerous demonstrations in recent years, principally aimed at unpopular majority shareholders the Glazers, but frustration has now spread to Ratcliffe. The billionaire British businessman, who owns a 28.94 per cent stake in United, has instigated wide – often unpopular – changes since taking over day-to-day operational control from the Glazers in February 2024. 'Jim Ratcliffe chose to get into bed with the Glazers and, in our opinion, is helping keep them in charge,' said a group representative, who added Ratcliffe was 'no saviour' and 'like a (red) devil in disguise,' last week. However, after conducting a survey, the group has acknowledged opinion is split and the time is not right for a protest. A statement read: 'With a fanbase as diverse and passionate as ours, finding the right balance isn't always easy. We've had to consider momentum, timing, fan appetite, broader consequences of protest activity whilst assessing how current and future decisions may impact us as fans. 'Given the current sentiment within the fanbase and particularly in light of these recent survey results, it's clear there is no unified view on the direction of the club under Ratcliffe. 'That split is real, and we believe it would be irresponsible to risk creating a situation that could result in any 'red on red' conflict inside or outside the stadium.' The group say almost 63 per cent of the near 26,000 respondents to their survey said Ratcliffe and his Ineos company should be held to account for their decisions so far by means of a protest. However, 68 per cent also believed they should be given more time.

Guinea name Duarte as new national coach

CONAKRY, Aug 11 (Reuters) - Well-travelled Portuguese coach Paulo Duarte has been named as Guinea's new coach, less than a month before their next round of World Cup qualifiers. Duarte, 56, has twice previously coached Burkina Faso and taken charge of Gabon and Togo, while also coaching at clubs in Portugal, France, Tunisia, Angola and Saudi Arabia. Guinea's football federation gave no contract details when they made the announcement on Monday, but said they would be looking for Duarte to 'restructure their national team'. Guinea trail leaders Algeria by eight points in their World Cup qualifying group with four games remaining, leaving them with only a slim chance of qualification. They play Somalia away on September 5 and then Algeria at home on September 8 in their next two qualifiers although a stadium ban means Guinea have moved their home game to Casablanca, Morocco.
