Chandigarh: The Congress held a condolence meeting at Sector 35 Congress Bhawan on Thursday to mourn the tragic killing of innocent people in Pahalgam by terrorists.
Rajni Patil
, MP and general secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), led the meet.
The meeting commenced with a two-minute silence to honour the departed souls. It was attended by Vidit Chaudhary, secretary of AICC, Chandigarh unit president HS Lucky, and other senior Congress leaders.
Condemning the killings, Patil said the spectacle of a young newlywed woman grieving uncontrollably beside the dead body of her husband shook all of us inside out. She said that Congressmen, who lost their great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Indira, and Rajiv Gandhi to terror attacks in the past, fully understand the pain and agony of families of those who lost their loved ones in the senseless act. She also said the Congress stands with the govt of India in this hour of crisis and demands the strictest punishment for the handlers of the terrorists.
Expressing grief, Vidit Chaudhary said no one should be allowed to politicise the tragic incident to promote communal politics in the country. He appealed to the people of all religions, castes, and creeds to unite to root out terrorism, which is against all religions and humanity.

Our forces brought Pakistan to its knees in 22 minutes, says PM Modi

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that the Indian armed forces made the "enemy" (Pakistan) fall to its knees in just 22 minutes during Operation Sindoor , adding that 'Made in India' defence equipment played a decisive role which demonstrated India's capabilities and its firm stance against terrorism. "Recently, the world saw what India is capable of. Operation Sindoor has made India's tough policy against terrorism absolutely clear to the world. We have shown that no place is safe for terrorists who shed the blood of Indians," the PM said at an event to mark the centenary celebration of the conversation between social reformer Sree Narayana Guru and Mahatma Gandhi. Modi said his govt had worked on the ideals of the revered spiritual guru who wanted a strong India that was free of any discrimination. "Sree Narayana Guru wanted a strong India. For the empowerment of India, we have to be ahead in every aspect - economic, social and defence. Today, the country is moving on this path. India is rapidly moving towards becoming the world's third largest economy," he added. Reiterating that today's India took steps according to what was right in the national interest, Modi said the country's dependence on foreign nations for military needs was also constantly decreasing. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Few Women Know This Household Item Fades Dark Spots Overnight Undo "We are becoming self-reliant in the defence sector. And we have seen its effect during Operation Sindoor as well. Our forces forced the enemy to surrender in 22 minutes with weapons made in India. I am confident that in the times to come, made in India weapons will be famous all over the world," he said. Modi cited the govt's welfare schemes in housing, drinking water and health insurance, among others, to state that these had empowered deprived and backward sections of society. More IITs, IIMs and AIIMS have been opened in the last 11 years than earlier, he said. In a swipe at previous govts, he said despite decades of independence, millions of citizens were forced to live in extremely difficult circumstances till a decade ago. "Crores of families lacked shelter and lakhs of villages had no access to clean drinking water, while even minor illnesses could not be treated due to lack of healthcare," he said. Poor people and women were deprived of basic human dignity, the PM added.

Bengaluru's street vendors protest their eviction, demand dignity and rights

1 2 Bengaluru: More than 500 street vendors gathered at Freedom Park Tuesday, staging a protest against what they called indiscriminate evictions by BBMP. Triggered by a recent statement from deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar, the protest was organised by Karnataka Pragatipara Beedhi Vyaparigala Sangha, affiliated with the All India Central Council of Trade Unions (AICTU), and drew political leaders and civil society groups. Chanting slogans and raising placards with messages such as "Street vendors demand a zero eviction policy" and "Footpath is meant for pedestrians and street vendors," the demonstrators accused BBMP of flouting procedures and ignoring their rights under the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014. Aren't we citizens? My shop is also on the list for removal," said G Nagaraj, 41, a clothing vendor from Jayanagar. The protest was also marked by emotionally charged testimonies from long-time vendors. "I've been with my pushcart in the streets for 30 years; they can't suddenly come and tell me to go away," said Aarai Krishnamoorthy, a vegetable seller from Vijayanagar. While BBMP maintains that it is only acting within the purview of the 2014 Act — which mandates vending only in designated zones — vendors allege the implementation is flawed and unjust. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo "Those identified in the BBMP survey must be given identity cards, and those left out must also be included," said S Babu, president of the union. According to the civic body, a citywide survey in 2025 identified 27,000 vendors, but unions claim the actual number exceeds 70,000. BBMP officials insist the current evictions are confined to the no- vending zones, particularly areas where footpaths are less than 12ft wide. "Though we've identified vending zones and spots, right after the ID cards are ready, we will have Town Vending Committee elections to finalise them. Even with ID cards, vending is not permitted in no-vending zones," BBMP special commissioner (welfare) Suralkar Vikas Kishor said. Vendor unions remain unconvinced, pointing out that ID card distribution is yet to begin and no alternative vending zones have been declared operational. "If you're removing them, what are the alternatives? Because these are very poor people, 90% come from depressed, suppressed, and oppressed classes," said Mavalli Shankar of Dalit Sangarsha Samiti. Some vendors were allegedly excluded from the survey for having multiple carts in the same family — a violation of BBMP's one-vendor-one-licence policy. "Though there's no such clause in the Act about local identity, we used Karnataka ration cards to verify families," said Kishor. Amid mounting tensions, BBMP has promised subsidised vending carts, including electric and manual options, to promote mobile vending. However, only one cart type — for ice cream vending — has passed technical checks so far. During Tuesday's protest, BBMP officials visited the site and invited leaders to meet with the special commissioner in the evening. Following the meeting, protesters said many of their demands were not addressed, and they were merely told that a meeting with the chief commissioner would be scheduled. Protesters have warned they will escalate their agitation if the authorities fail to respond meaningfully in the coming days. "We aren't against development — we want to be part of it," said Sasikala Nagaraj, 51, who has been selling clothes for over three decades. "But for that, we need basic infrastructure: Toilets, clean water, shelter, and dignity. Include us in the city's progress."

Compared to UPA, Modi govt has 83% success rate in zonal councils: Shah

1 2 Varanasi: Union home minister Amit Shah on Tuesday took a jibe at the Congress-led UPA govt by saying that compared to 2004-14 (when UPA was in office), about 83% of the issues discussed in zonal council meetings between 2014-25 have been resolved, which is an encouraging sign. Making this observation while chairing the 25th meeting of the Central Zonal Council in Varanasi which was attended by CM Yogi Adityanath and his counterparts — Pushkar Singh Dhami of Uttarakhand, Mohan Yadav of Madhya Pradesh, and Vishnu Deo Sai of Chhattisgarh, the Union home minister also called upon the memer states to eradicate child malnutrition, reduce the school dropout ratio to zero and strengthen cooperatives. "Between 2004 and 2014, only 11 meetings of the zonal councils and 14 meetings of the standing committees of the zonal councils were held. Compared to it, 28 zonal council meetings and 33 standing committee meetings were held between 2014 and 2025 — marking a twofold increase," said the home minister. Earlier, Shah moved a resolution to commend the strong willpower of PM Narendra Modi and the valour of the Indian armed forces, which was unanimously approved by the CZC. Shah said the member states of the CZC have a crucial role to play in achieving the PM's goal of building a developed India by 2047. He said CZC is the only zonal council where no issue or dispute exists between member states, and this is a significant achievement. A total of 19 issues were discussed in the Tuesday meeting, including matters of national importance. These included the implementation of Fast Track Special Courts for the speedy investigation and prompt disposal of rape cases against women and children, provision of brick-and-mortar banking facilities within the designated radius of every village, and implementation of the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS-112), among other key issues. Guided by Modi's vision to leverage cooperative and competitive federalism for the all-round development of the country, the zonal councils provide a structured mechanism for dialogue and discussion on issues affecting two or more states or the Centre and states, and through this, serve as an important platform to enhance mutual cooperation.
