Varanasi: Union home minister
Amit Shah
on Tuesday took a jibe at the Congress-led UPA govt by saying that compared to 2004-14 (when UPA was in office), about 83% of the issues discussed in zonal council meetings between 2014-25 have been resolved, which is an encouraging sign.
Making this observation while chairing the 25th meeting of the Central Zonal Council in Varanasi which was attended by CM Yogi Adityanath and his counterparts — Pushkar Singh Dhami of Uttarakhand, Mohan Yadav of Madhya Pradesh, and Vishnu Deo Sai of Chhattisgarh, the Union home minister also called upon the memer states to eradicate child malnutrition, reduce the school dropout ratio to zero and strengthen cooperatives.
"Between 2004 and 2014, only 11 meetings of the zonal councils and 14 meetings of the standing committees of the zonal councils were held. Compared to it, 28 zonal council meetings and 33 standing committee meetings were held between 2014 and 2025 — marking a twofold increase," said the home minister.

He said that enhancing the income of panchayats would make India's three-tier democratic Panchayati Raj system more effective.
Earlier, Shah moved a resolution to commend the strong willpower of PM Narendra Modi and the valour of the Indian armed forces, which was unanimously approved by the CZC. Shah said the member states of the CZC have a crucial role to play in achieving the PM's goal of building a developed India by 2047.
He said CZC is the only zonal council where no issue or dispute exists between member states, and this is a significant achievement.
A total of 19 issues were discussed in the Tuesday meeting, including matters of national importance. These included the implementation of Fast Track Special Courts for the speedy investigation and prompt disposal of rape cases against women and children, provision of brick-and-mortar banking facilities within the designated radius of every village, and implementation of the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS-112), among other key issues.
Guided by Modi's vision to leverage cooperative and competitive federalism for the all-round development of the country, the zonal councils provide a structured mechanism for dialogue and discussion on issues affecting two or more states or the Centre and states, and through this, serve as an important platform to enhance mutual cooperation.

Anti-Emergency movement reaffirmed vitality of preserving India's democracy: PM

New Delhi, June 25 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi today reiterated his commitment to strengthening the principles of Constitution and working together to realise the vision of a Viksit Bharat and said the anti-Emergency movement reaffirmed the vitality of preserving India's democratic framework. In a series of tweets on the occasion marking fifty years since the imposition of the Emergency, the Prime Minister paid tributes to those Indians who defended democracy during ''one of the darkest chapters in the nation's history.'' Recalling the grave assault on constitutional values, he said June 25 is observed as Samvidhan Hatya Diwas — a day when fundamental rights were suspended, press freedom was extinguished, and countless political leaders, social workers, students and ordinary citizens imprisoned. 'No Indian will ever forget the manner in which the spirit of our Constitution was violated, the voice of Parliament muzzled and attempts were made to control the courts. The 42nd Amendment is a prime example of their shenanigans. The poor, marginalised and downtrodden were particularly targeted, including their dignity insulted.'' He called upon all those who remember the days of the Emergency or those whose families suffered during that time to share their experiences on social media to create awareness among the youth of the shameful time from 1975 to 1977. 'Today marks fifty years since one of the darkest chapters in India's democratic history, the imposition of the Emergency. The people of India mark this day as Samvidhan Hatya Diwas. On this day, the values enshrined in the Indian Constitution were set aside, fundamental rights were suspended, press freedom was extinguished and several political leaders, social workers, students and ordinary citizens were jailed. It was as if the Congress Government in power at that time placed democracy under arrest! #SamvidhanHatyaDiwas' 'We salute every person who stood firm in the fight against the Emergency! These were the people from all over India, from all walks of life, from diverse ideologies who worked closely with each other with one aim: to protect India's democratic fabric and to preserve the ideals for which our freedom fighters devoted their lives. It was their collective struggle that ensured that the then Congress Government had to restore democracy and call for fresh elections, which they badly lost. #SamvidhanHatyaDiwas' 'We also reiterate our commitment to strengthening the principles in our Constitution and working together to realise our vision of a Viksit Bharat. May we scale new heights of progress and fulfil the dreams of the poor and downtrodden. #SamvidhanHatyaDiwas' 'When the Emergency was imposed, I was a young RSS Pracharak. The anti-Emergency movement was a learning experience for me. It reaffirmed the vitality of preserving our democratic framework. At the same time, I got to learn so much from people across the political spectrum. I am glad that BlueKraft Digital Foundation has compiled some of those experiences in the form of a book, whose foreword has been penned by HD Deve Gowda, himself a stalwart of the anti-Emergency movement. ''The Emergency Diaries' chronicles my journey during the Emergency years. It brought back many memories from that time. I call upon all those who remember those dark days of the Emergency or those whose families suffered during that time to share their experiences on social media. It will create awareness among the youth of the shameful time from 1975 to 1977. UNI RB GNK 1046

PM Modi Condemns Congress On Emergency's Golden Anniversary

On the 50th anniversary of India's Emergency period, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a blistering critique of the Congress party, declaring that no Indian will ever forget how the spirit of the Constitution was violated during that dark chapter of the nation's democratic journey. Through a series of posts on social media platform X, the Prime Minister characterized the Emergency as one of the most troubling periods in India's democratic evolution, emphasizing his administration's dedication to upholding constitutional values. Today marks fifty years since one of the darkest chapters in India's democratic history, the imposition of the Emergency. The people of India mark this day as Samvidhan Hatya Diwas. On this day, the values enshrined in the Indian Constitution were set aside, fundamental rights… — Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) June 25, 2025 Modi accused the Congress-led government of that era of effectively imprisoning democracy itself, stating that the party had "placed democracy under arrest" during Indira Gandhi's rule from 1975 to 1977. The Prime Minister outlined the systematic dismantling of democratic institutions during the Emergency, highlighting how constitutional principles were abandoned, basic rights were suspended, media freedom was eliminated, and countless political figures, activists, students, and ordinary citizens were imprisoned without due process. Particular criticism was directed at the 42nd Constitutional Amendment enacted during the Emergency, which Modi described as a clear demonstration of Congress's manipulative tactics. This amendment significantly altered India's constitutional framework, though many of its provisions were later repealed by the Janata Party government through subsequent amendments in 1977 and 1978. Modi emphasized that the Emergency's impact was most severely felt by India's most vulnerable populations, including the poor, marginalized communities, and socially disadvantaged groups, whose dignity was systematically undermined during this period. The Prime Minister paid tribute to those who courageously opposed the Emergency, recognizing citizens from diverse backgrounds and political ideologies who united in their commitment to preserving India's democratic foundation and honoring the sacrifices of freedom fighters. He credited this collective resistance with ultimately forcing the Congress government to restore democratic governance and conduct fresh elections, which resulted in a decisive defeat for the ruling party. The Modi administration has officially designated June 25 as "Samvidhan Hatya Diwas" (Constitution Murder Day), institutionalizing the commemoration of this significant date in Indian political history. The Emergency was declared on June 25, 1975, under the justification of addressing "internal disturbances" and remained in effect until March 21, 1977. The subsequent elections saw Indira Gandhi and the Congress party suffer their first major electoral defeat, replaced by the Janata Party coalition, which included the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the precursor to today's BJP. Modi concluded his remarks by reaffirming his government's commitment to strengthening constitutional principles and working collaboratively toward achieving the vision of a developed India (Viksit Bharat), emphasizing continued progress in fulfilling the aspirations of the nation's underprivileged sections.
