ExxonMobil, operator of the offshore Guyana Stabroek consortium with partners Chevron and CNOOC, announced the startup of its fourth deepwater project, Yellowtail on Friday. With production capacity of 250,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd), Yellowtail raises total Stabroek capacity to 900,000 bpd faster than anyone had expected just a year ago.
'Yellowtail's ahead-of-schedule startup is a significant milestone for ExxonMobil and the people of Guyana,' said Dan Ammann, president of ExxonMobil Upstream Company, said in a release. 'With Guyanese making up more than 67% of the country's oil-and-gas workforce and over 2,000 local businesses engaged, this project reflects our deepening roots in the country and our shared commitment to long-term, inclusive growth.'
Yellowtail represents the fourth offshore mega-project the consortium has successfully taken to production in just the last five years under budget and ahead of schedule, a record the company says ranks its Guayana deepwater operations as 'the most successful in the world.' The additional 250,000 bpd capacity from Yellowtail sets the overall Stabroek operation on pace to reach capacity of 1.7 million bpd by 2030. Achieving that level of production would rank Guyana, a tiny nation of approximately 800,000 citizens, among the 15 largest oil producing nations in the world.

ExxonMobil, as the project operator under the consortium's joint operating agreement, owns a 45% working interest in the Stabroek operations. CNOOC - the Chinese National Offshore Oil Corporation - owns a 25% share, with Chevron owning the remaining 30%. Chevron holds that share now thanks to its having prevailed in a long-running arbitration case involving an ExxonMobil challenge to its takeover of a stake previously owned by Houston-based independent Hess Corp. Following that decision, Chevron was able to close its deal with Hess on July 21.
Yellowtail's operations are facilitated by the ONE GUYANA floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) vessel built and operated by Netherlands-based SBM Offshore. The vessel is currently under a lease agreement, but ExxonMobil will ultimately acquire ownership of it when the lease period expires. The ONE GUYANA is the largest FPSO in operation offshore Guyana to date, and sports storage capacity of 2 million barrels in addition to its initial 250,000 bpd production capacity.
The world-class development at Stabroek has made Guyana the fastest-growing economy on earth since 2020 as the Guyanese government has taken in $6.2 billion in revenues as of the end of 2024. Exxon's Guyana Annual Report for 2024 notes that the three consortium partners have made cumulative investments in Guyana totaling $55 billion. Obviously, both numbers will continue to rise as the project grows, with Guyana's revenues rising to an estimated $10 billion annually by 2030.
In my first story about Stabroek in 2019, I wrote, 'The 800,000 or so citizens of Guyana are about to experience a very significant change in their standard of living due to the ongoing development of their nation's offshore mineral resources. The crucial challenge for the government there will come in properly managing the new wealth.'
It was obvious then that the consortium was on the precipice of a new oil development which would ultimately transform the Guyanese economy. That transformation is well underway now, with much, much more to come. In reality, it's just getting started.

US oil and gas M&A activity tripled last year, report says

By Nicole Jao NEW YORK (Reuters) -Mergers and acquisitions in the U.S. oil and gas sector tripled last year despite softer commodity prices as energy companies boosted spending to improve efficiency and profits, according to a report released on Tuesday. WHY IT'S IMPORTANT The jump in dealmaking marks a shift in strategy after years of focusing on shareholder returns over growth as commodity prices retreated from their 2022 high. CONTEXT The sector-wide consolidation has been led by a handful of megadeals by large players, including Exxon Mobil, Diamondback Energy and ConocoPhillips. KEY QUOTE Companies flush with cash were focused on driving efficiency through scale, said Bruce On, partner at EY's strategy and energy transactions group. 'It's a relook at process, tools, workforce and everything around your operations,' On said. BY THE NUMBERS Leading energy companies spent $206.6 billion on mergers and acquisitions in 2024, up from $47.9 billion the previous year, according to an Ernst & Young study published on Tuesday. Oil and gas companies cut spending on dividends and share repurchase payments by about 25% last year to $29.2 billion. Money spent on tapping oil and gas also fell slightly, with exploration and development expenditure down 7% year on year at $85.5 billion. Profits fell 10% last year to $74.8 billion, less than half the record level recorded in 2022, primarily owing to soft commodity prices, the report said. Exxon Mobil was the biggest buyer in 2024 with total property acquisition costs of $84.5 billion. The company announced the acquisition of U.S. shale oil producer Pioneer Natural Resources in October 2023 and completed the $60 billion purchase last May.

Woodside reports strong production growth in H1 2025

Australia-based Woodside Energy has reported strong operational and financial results for the first half of 2025 (H1 2025), delivering 548,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day in production and progressing several major projects. The company's half-year net profit after tax (NPAT) stood at $1.31bn, with an underlying NPAT of $1.24bn, a decrease from $1.63bn in the same period the previous year. Operating revenue experienced 10% year-on-year growth, reaching $6.59bn. The board has announced a fully franked interim dividend of $0.53 per share, corresponding to a payout ratio of 80% of the underlying NPAT and an annualised yield of 6.9%. Woodside Energy CEO Meg O'Neill said: 'Strong underlying performance of our assets, our robust financial performance and a focus on disciplined capital management have enabled us to maintain our interim dividend payout ratio at the top end of the payout range. 'The outstanding performance of our high-quality assets over the first half has continued to support safe, reliable operations. This has been complemented by a strong focus on cost management, resulting in a reduction in our unit production costs. We have also taken a disciplined approach to future growth and reduced spend on new energy and exploration as we prioritise delivering sanctioned projects.' Excluding impairment, the company's earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) from the underlying base business was $4.6bn, a 5% rise from the previous year's $4.37bn. The marketing segment contributed $144m to the total EBIT, accounting for roughly 8% of the total. Woodside said this performance demonstrates the efficiency improvements and value creation derived from the trading, marketing and shipping of its products, including third-party volumes. The company also reported net cash from operating activities of $3.33bn and capital expenditure (capex) of $2.55bn, an 8% increase from 2024. Dividends distributed amounted to $1bn, a 23% decrease from the previous year's $1.3bn. In H1 2025, Woodside entered into three long-term liquefied natural gas (LNG) sales and purchase agreements (SPAs). This encompasses two contracts with Uniper to provide one million tonnes per annum (mtpa) from the Louisiana LNG project for a duration of up to 13 years, starting from the date it commences commercial operations, as well as a supply of up to 1mtpa from Woodside's global portfolio until 2039. Additionally, an SPA was signed with China Resources Gas International for the supply of around 600,000 tonnes per annum of LNG over 15 years, starting in 2027. Woodside has also entered into non-binding heads of agreements with both JERA and Petronas. The company said the Scarborough energy project, located 375km off the Pilbara coast of Western Australia, is 86% complete and remains on track for first LNG cargo in H2 2026. The Trion project, a deep-water oil and gas development in the Gulf of Mexico, is 35% complete and remains on track for first oil in 2028. The Beaumont New Ammonia Project in Beaumont, Texas, is 95% complete, with phase one targeting first ammonia production from late 2025. In June of this year, Woodside finalised the sale of a 40% interest in its Louisiana LNG project to Stonepeak, a global investment firm.
