Malaysia's ageing population rises with 12 states now classified as elderly
Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin confirmed that a state is considered ageing when individuals aged 65 and above exceed seven per cent of its total population.
Melaka leads with an ageing rate of 7.3 per cent, followed by Pahang and Kuala Lumpur at 7.1 per cent each.
'Perak remains the state with the highest elderly population at 10.3 per cent,' Mohd Uzir said.
Five states outpaced the national growth rate of 0.5 per cent, including Terengganu (1.2 per cent), Kelantan (one per cent), and Pahang, Selangor, and Melaka (0.6 per cent each).
Malaysia's total population in 2025 is estimated at 34.2 million, a marginal increase from 34.1 million in 2024. The citizen population grew slightly to 30.9 million, while non-citizens saw a sharp decline in growth from 13.6 per cent to -0.5 per cent. The elderly population (65+) rose to eight per cent, while the youth demographic (0-14 years) dropped to 21.6 per cent.
Selangor remains the most populous state (21.6 per cent), followed by Johor (12.3 per cent) and Sabah (11 per cent). Labuan and Putrajaya recorded the lowest population percentages at 0.3 per cent and 0.4 per cent, respectively.
Demographic shifts also show Bumiputera representation rising to 70.5 per cent, while Chinese and Indian populations saw slight declines. The male population (18 million) continues to outnumber females (16.3 million), with Kuala Lumpur having the highest sex ratio (117 males per 100 females).
Population density increased slightly to 104 persons per square kilometre, with Kuala Lumpur being the most densely populated (8,546 persons/sq km) and Sarawak the least (20 persons/sq km). Projections indicate Malaysia's population will peak at 42.38 million by 2059 before declining. - Bernama

Pahang Sultan calls for deeper Syariah enactment reforms

RM72.8 mln approved for Batang Sadong riverbank protection project
Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. – Bernama file photo KUCHING (Aug 4): The federal government has approved RM72.8 million for a riverbank protection project along Batang Sadong at Kampung Hulu and Kampung Hilir in Serian to address ongoing erosion and flooding issues. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the project, to be implemented through the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID), was approved under the Fifth Rolling Plan (RP5) of the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) for 2025. 'The main scope of the project involves the construction of riverbank stabilisation structures to overcome the problem of collapsing riverbanks in the affected areas,' he said in his written answer to Serian MP Dato Sri Richard Riot Jaem in Parliament today. The parliamentary reply was shared to The Borneo Post by Riot's office. Fadillah said survey and detailed design works will be carried out this year, while physical construction is expected to begin in mid-2027. KUALA LUMPUR: A war of words broke out between a government backbencher and an opposition MP after the latter mentioned the May 13 racial riots while criticising the 13th Malaysia Plan on grounds that it lacked initiatives for the Bumiputera community. Awang Hashim (PN-Pendang) questioned the government's emphasis on New Villages, when debating the 13MP, tabled last Thursday. He said while Perikatan Nasional had no issue with funds for New Villages, there was no specific development for the Bumiputera community. 'When we look back at the May 13 incident, one of the elements was economic pressure on the Bumiputeras. That's why the 1MP to 13MP exist, to balance income and the economy among the races. But the 13MP has nothing specific for the Bumiputera community. 'Is the government trying to bring back another May 13 incident?' This prompted RSN Rayer (PH-Jelutong) to cite Standing Order 36(9)(c), which prohibits statements that can provoke hostility or hurt the feelings of any race. 'Pendang is suggesting May 13 can happen again,' Rayer said, urging deputy speaker Alice Lau to make a ruling. Awang denied making any provocative statement, saying such accusations were slanderous. 'I didn't say what you claimed I did. That's why even DAP people don't accept you anymore – you lost the (party's) central executive committee election,' he said. Rayer replied: 'We accept your point about Chinese New Villages, but why repeat that May 13 can happen again?' Defending his comments, Awang said: 'I quoted the point made by the prime minister, that the socio-economic level of New Villages will be strengthened through a development master plan. So, is it racist to mention that? If I say 'Bumiputera', is it racist? If I say 'Chinese', is it racist?' Rayer continued to press for a ruling, but Lau said she 'will let the minister respond', likely alluding to the economy minister.
