IIE-Vega student takes top spot at Absa Design Hackathon

Khanyisile Sokhela, a third-year student at Independent Institute of Education (IIE)-Vega Bordeaux, was named the winner of this year's Absa Design Hackathon after she impressed a panel of Absa judges with her digital solution aimed at helping the bank attract one million new customers.

Sokhela, an IIE Bachelor of Experience Design, will be competing with other tertiary institutions for a 2026 internship at Absa. Now in its fifth year, the Absa Design Hackathon was originally launched during the Covid-19 lockdown as a virtual event. In recent years, it has become more intentional about targeting tertiary institutions.
For Absa, the hackathon serves as both a recruitment tool for their design team and a pipeline to funnel top talent into their graduate programme and broader hiring process. The bank is also working with institutions such as the Tshwane University of Technology, Greenside Design Centre and the University of Johannesburg.
Sokhela received a backpack filled with Absa merchandise, including noise-cancelling headphones and a speaker. This was her second year participating in the hackathon – she also placed in the top five in 2024.
This year, she created a youth-focused education campaign called 'We Grow Together,' aimed at boosting financial confidence among 20 to 30-year-olds. The campaign offered a culturally relevant and interactive digital experience to teach financial literacy. It included a TikTok-led content strategy, a Gen Z-focused microsite and features for communal saving.
'As new adults, financial freedom is scary, but my campaign shows them that with Absa's help, it's something they can embrace,' she said.
Her microsite included infographics on big purchases like buying a car or a house, and a dedicated section for content creators on how to manage irregular incomes. TikTok was chosen as the campaign's partner because it's familiar to Gen Z users.
Reflecting on the experience, Sokhela encouraged other students to get involved. 'It's a form of networking – showing yourself, your work and your potential.'

'My motivation has always been to create meaningful experiences that connect people to places, cultures, and stories that are often overlooked,' Matole shares, reflecting on his journey that began ten years ago. Growing up in Khayelitsha, he witnessed the beauty and depth of local culture, recognising the need to embrace rather than lament his community's narrative. Through his various projects, Matole has not only opened doors for visitors but has also provided vital opportunities for local communities. He fondly recalls his pride in launching initiatives such as the ABCD Concept and the 'Class in the Cloud' programme, which takes disadvantaged school children on adventures to Table Mountain, one of the world's seven wonders. In a time of crisis, he orchestrated a collaboration with local tailors to produce reusable cloth masks, offering both protection and economic relief for families affected by the pandemic. 'It was about using what we had to take care of each other,' he notes, highlighting the power of community action. Recently, Matole has turned his focus toward empowering the youth through the Youth Travel & Tech Summit, a project that unites young people from various townships to explore opportunities in tourism and technology. Image: Supplied 'Seeing young people inspired to dream bigger is the best reward,' Matole asserts, emphasising the importance of mentorship and skill-building. Taking creative risks has defined Matole's journey. He challenges the mainstream narrative of township tourism by offering immersive experiences that foster direct community interaction. 'We created walking and running tours that allow tourists to experience township life authentically. The result is a much richer engagement for both visitors and residents,' he reflects. These bold moves have not only set him apart from competitors but have also reaffirmed the significance of community-led tourism. However, the journey hasn't always been comfortable. Matole candidly admits that many perceive him as a naturally confident public speaker due to his leading roles. 'The truth is, I often push myself out of my comfort zone,' he states. But it's this very discomfort that fuels his drive to advocate for his community and continue building connections within it. Living in Cape Town, Matole thrives amidst the city's dynamic blend of cultures and natural beauty. 'There's nowhere else where you can wake up to the ocean, walk through vibrant townships, hike a mountain, and end the day enjoying music and good food together,' he enthuses. For visitors, he advises bringing an open mind, as the essence of Cape Town lies in the stories and connections waiting to be discovered beyond the tourist hotspots. On destinations Matole has dreamt of exploring, Mozambique is at the top for its lively culture and stunning coastlines, while he also expressed a desire to visit Lesotho to experience its rich heritage. 'The best holidays aren't about fancy resorts; they're about places that remind you how wonderfully diverse our world is,' he reflects. Looking towards 2025, Matole envisions expanding the Youth Travel & Tech Summit and launching new community-led experiences. Strengthening partnerships with local and international organisations is a key goal, ensuring a wider distribution of resources and training for local communities. 'At the heart of all this is the same mission: telling our stories, creating opportunities, and showcasing the power of our communities,' he explains. He encourages aspiring travel industry professionals to embrace their journeys authentically. 'Start where you are, with what you have. Don't be afraid to take risks and ask for help - focus on the people and the stories.' Matole's journey has revealed that meaningful connections and genuine experiences are the foundation of impactful travel. Amidst his many roles, Matole recalls one of the most bizarre moments of his career: organising a silent disco on a township street amidst load shedding. 'It turned into one of the most unforgettable nights,' he recalls, reminding us that sometimes the most unexpected ideas create magical connections between people. For Matole, life is governed by his mantra: 'Start with what you have, where you are, and do what you can.' This ethos has shaped his approach to creating impactful experiences and nurturing his community through tourism.

Volkswagen opens pre-orders for Tiguan Allspace-replacing Tayron

Tayron will provide seating for five or seven, although for the moment, only Volkswagen's smallest petrol engine has been allocated. Revealed on local soil at its annual product Indaba in February, Volkswagen has officially opened pre-ordering of the new Tayron ahead of its market launch at the end of this month. Wolfsburg's seven-seat replacement for the Tiguan Allspace, the Tayron introduces a name offered in China since 2018 for a market specific variant of the Tiguan to South Africa and indeed Europe for the first time, Produced at Volkswagen's home plant instead of being importing from the Changchun facility, the Tayron rides on the same MQB platform as the Tiguan, but with dimensional increases of 230 mm in overall length, six millimetres in width and 29 mm in height. Longer by 115 mm on the wheelbase front as well, the Tayron's measurements therefore amount to 4 770 mm long, 1 849 mm wide, 1 660 mm tall and 2 791 mm long in the case of the former. The upshot is more boot space despite the additional seats. Compared to the Tiguan, which has between 652 and 1 650-litres of packing capacity, utility in the Tayron ranges from 345-litres, to 885-litres with the second-row folded row. With the middle row also lowered, space maxes out at 2 090-litres. Still to be officially priced, Volkswagen has, however, confirmed specification, as well as three trim grades; base, Life and R-Line. The only variant to have five-seats, the base Tayron's spec sheet comprises 18-inch Bologna alloy wheels, LED headlights, the 12.9-inch infotainment system, Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Spot Monitoring, Park Assist, Lane Keep Assist, Front Assist and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. Stepping up to the Life, which adds the seven-seat layout, nets tri-zone climate control, illuminated front and rear Volkswagen badges, ambient lighting, the 12.3-inch Digital Cockpit instrument cluster, Auto High Beam Assist, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Automatic Emergency Braking, a reverse camera and Exit Warning Assist. Completing the range, the R-Line comes equipped with the R bumpers and door sills, 19-inch Coventry alloy wheels, uprated LED headlights, Varenna leather upholstery, heated and massaging Ergo Active front seats and the expanded ambient lighting package with 30 instead of 10 colours. Known options for the latter pair is the Matrix I.Q. LED headlights, a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats and a wireless smartphone charger. Smallest TSI only.. for now Up front, Volkswagen has so far only mentioned a single powertrain option, the 1.4 TSI, whose 110kW/250Nm goes to the front axle via a seven-speed DSG. For the time being, the 2.0 TSI and 2.0 TDI engines from the Tiguan hasn't been approved, with the same applying to the 4Motion all-wheel-drive system.
