West Nile virus detected in UK mosquitoes for first time
Although the virus can sometimes make people seriously ill, there is no evidence it is spreading in the UK and the risk to the general public is "very low", the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said.
The virus is found in many parts of the world, including Africa, South America and mainland Europe.
Climate change and other factors have been pushing mosquitoes - and the diseases they carry - further north in recent years.
West Nile virus causes either very minor symptoms or none at all - but around 20% of infected people can experience headaches, high fever and skin issues. In rare cases, it can kill through serious brain illnesses, including encephalitis or meningitis.
No specific treatment or vaccines exist for humans.
To date, there have been no human cases of West Nile virus acquired in the UK - although, since 2000, there have been seven cases of the disease linked to travel to other countries.
West Nile virus is usually present in several regions across the world, including parts of Africa, Asia, South America and Europe, and has expanded in recent years.
Research by the UKHSA and the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) found fragments of the virus in mosquitoes collected at ponds near Retford, Nottinghamshire in 2023.
"While this is the first detection of West Nile Virus in mosquitoes in the UK so far, it is not unexpected as the virus is already widespread in Europe," said Dr Meera Chand, a deputy director for travel health and infections at UKHSA.
Dr Arran Folly, who led the project which found the virus, said its detection is part of a "wider changing landscape, where, in the wake of climate change mosquito-borne diseases are expanding to new areas".
While the Aedes vexans mosquito is native to Britain, he added that warming temperatures may bring non-native species to the UK and, with them, the potential of infectious disease.
Prof James Logan, from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, said the development was "serious" but there was no need for the public to be alarmed.
He said surveillance systems were in place to monitor increased mosquito activity and shifting bird migration caused by warmer weather.
"But as conditions change, we need to stay one step ahead," he said.
"This is a moment to recognise that the UK is no longer immune to some diseases once considered 'tropical'."
Prof Logan said the virus is likely to have arrived via an infected bird or mosquito, which can both travel considerable distances during seasonal migration.
Infected mosquitoes can transmit the virus to humans, he said, but there was "no evidence of human infection acquired in the UK".
"However, the detection of the virus in mosquitoes marks a significant step in that direction," he added.
Heather Ferguson, professor of infectious disease ecology at Glasgow University, said several mosquito species native the UK were "known to be capable for transmitting the virus", but do not do so at present because the conditions, such as temperature, "are not favourable".
But she said this could change in the future, which is why lots of monitoring, testing and surveillance is always needed.
The affected mosquito, one of many thousands of species of mosquito, is often found in wet areas. Experts recommend getting rid of standing water sources where they breed, and taking personal measures such as using mosquito repellent and bed nets.
Last year, protests were held in Seville, Spain, after the death of five people infected with the disease.

West Nile Virus detected in Naperville, city urges caution
Naperville city officials are urging residents to be cautious after two mosquito traps tested positive for West Nile virus. The two traps that tested positive were on Oleson Drive and Jackson Avenue, according to a news release from the city. In response to the positive samples, city crews have sprayed immediate areas, checked for breeding sites and retreated area catch basins, the release said. The city will take further precautions by spraying the area around Jackson Avenue on Aug. 29 in advance of the start of Last Fling, Naperville's annual Labor Day Weekend festival. City efforts to prevent the virus from spreading include removing standing water and treating ponds, marshes and catch basins with safe chemicals during mosquito season from April through October. Mosquito traps are monitored every week and chemicals are sprayed when necessary to control the adult mosquito population. Naperville is not the only municipality to detect West Nile virus this summer. Earlier this month, Chicago health officials confirmed three people between the ages of 40 and 80 tested positive for the virus. In addition to those cases, the Illinois Department of Public Health has reported five other cases West Nile in DuPage, DeKalb, Lake, Madison and Wayne counties. Last year, the state health agency reported 69 human cases resulting in 13 deaths. Nearly half were in Cook County. To prevent mosquito bites, city officials recommend removing standing water, applying mosquito repellant with 25% to 35% DEET, and wearing loose-fitting, long-sleeved clothing. The city also urges residents to make sure all window screens are in tact, roof gutters are clear, and grass and shrubs cut short. Most people who are infected with West Nile do not feel symptoms or have very mild symptoms three to 14 days after they are bit, the city release said. Mild symptoms include a fever, headache and body aches, occasionally with a skin rash on the trunk of the body and swollen lymph glands. Less than 1% of people develop severe symptoms, with people over 50 most at risk.

West Michigan resident dies of complications of West Nile virus
A human case of West Nile virus in West Michigan has resulted in the death of that patient, local health officials confirmed. This is one of three publicly reported human cases of West Nile virus in Michigan this year, the only one so far that has resulted in a death. Oakland County recently reported a case of West Nile virus in a person, as did Livingston County. There are several counties in Michigan where local health officials have confirmed the virus among mosquito populations. It also has been confirmed among mosquitoes in Windsor, Ontario. The Kent County Health Department in Grand Rapids made its announcement Thursday, saying it was the first West Nile virus death in its area since May 2024. The health department also said there were detections of the virus earlier this summer in mosquito populations for three ZIP codes in Kent County. Those detections included a positive test result from a mosquito collected just 3,000 feet from where the patient lived. Mosquitoes are infected with the West Nile virus by biting an infected bird. The virus can then spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Most people who are infected with the virus have either no symptoms or experience a mild illness such as fever, headache, and body aches. But in some people, more serious conditions such as inflammation and swelling of the brain can occur. People older than 50 are more likely to develop serious and potentially life-threatening symptoms of West Nile Virus if they do get sick. Health officials recommend people take precautions against mosquito bites so to limit the spread of mosquito-borne diseases. Those steps include using an insect repellent registered with the Environmental Protection Agency, and removing standing water around homes and outdoor property where mosquitoes could breed. New Covid wave warning as cases in hospital patients soar by 31% in a fortnight
Covid cases in hospital patients have jumped by almost a third in a fortnight - sparking concerns of a new Covid wave. The number of hospital patients with respiratory symptoms testing positive for the virus has increased from 5.8 per cent on 26 July to 7.6 per cent on 10 August, according to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). That marks an increase of 31 per cent in just 15 days. This percentage is known as the positivity rate and it is much higher among hospital patients with symptoms than the general public. The rise in cases in hospitals could be an indication the country is facing a new wave of infections, with epidemiologists suggesting soaring cases could be a cause for concern. 'This rise in cases reinforces the fact that the virus is still circulating and is capable of spreading,' Professor Lawrence Young, a virologist at Warwick University told The Independent. He added: 'A particular concern is the impact on infection levels as people return to work and school after the holiday season and the effect of cooler weather. This coupled with new virus variants and restricted access to free vaccines over the Autumn period is worrying.' But experts stress it is difficult to get an accurate picture as people no longer routinely test for the virus. Infectious disease expert Professor Paul Hunter, at University of East Anglia, explained that infection numbers have been drifting up and down for most of the year and he expects cases to rise as we approach the end of the year. 'We will see further increases but against a continuing declining general trend in hospitalisation and deaths. As to how many infections are occurring in the community. This autumn the vaccine will be offered to adults over 75, residents in care homes for older adults and those who are immunosuppressed over the age of six months.
