Liverpool are considering a blockbuster £120 million ($160 million) bid for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak despite the Magpies' desire to hold onto the Sweden star, according to reports on Wednesday.
The Premier League champions are yet to make a formal offer for Isak but he is believed to be high on their wanted list as boss Arne Slot looks for a new forward in the wake of Diogo Jota's death.

Isak joined Newcastle from Real Sociedad for £63 million in 2022, emerging as a key player for Eddie Howe's team.
He scored 23 Premier League goals last season to fire the club into the Champions League for the second time in three years.
Isak also scored in Newcastle's League Cup final victory over Liverpool at Wembley, which ended the Magpies' 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy.
The 25-year-old, who is currently at a pre-season training camp in Austria, still has three years remaining on his contract and Newcastle are understood to be trying to tie him to a new deal.
They have reportedly put a value of around £150 million on Isak in an attempt to ward off potential suitors, with Arsenal also reportedly contemplating an offer.

Newcastle's majority owners, Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, have the financial muscle to resist any approach for a player who is said not to be agitating for a move.
Darwin Nunez and Federico Chiesa have also been linked with moves away from Anfield, which would increase their need to bring in a new striker.
As well as their Isak interest, Liverpool have been linked with Eintracht Frankfurt's £70 million-rated forward Hugo Ekitike, who has also attracted attention from Newcastle.

Crushing new blow for Knights fans as Melbourne Storm poach young star from Newcastle

A tumultuous week for the Newcastle Knights has gone from bad to worse, with the club reportedly losing one of its best young talents to the Melbourne Storm. Rumours that Kalyn Ponga is unhappy at the club refuse to go away, despite him insisting on Thursday that he's staying put. Coach Adam O'Brien is said to be on borrowed time, with the club reportedly preparing to part ways with him at the end of the season. And club officials are facing backlash for an 'insensitive' oversight towards former player Alex McKinnon. But the situation went from bad to worse on Friday amid reports the Storm have poached young gun Cooper Votano from Newcastle. The is reporting that 16-year-old Votano has agreed to join the Storm from next season. Described as "one of the game's most promising young playmakers", Cooper is the younger brother of NSW Under-19 representative Connor Votano. Cooper helped the Knights make the Harold Matthews Cup grand final this season in the Under-17s competition. Predominantly a half, Cooper's exit is a hammer blow for the Knights considering their struggle in the position in recent seasons. Jackson Hastings, Tyson Gamble and Jack Cogger have all failed to cement their place in the halves for Newcastle, however Fletcher Sharpe has emerged as a genuine superstar at five-eighth. The Knights also have Dylan Brown arriving in 2026 to play halfback. Votano's move to Melbourne is seen as an insurance policy for the Storm amid uncertainty around Jahrome Hughes and Cameron Munster. Hughes is contracted until the end of 2026, while Munster's deal is one year longer. Both are expected to receive lucrative offers from expansion clubs Perth and PNG, and there's also the looming threat of the cashed-up R360 rugby competition. How does Cooper Votano's exit affect brother Connor? The Storm also have talented young playmakers Jonah Pezet and Tyran Wishart on their books. Votano's exit will be a huge worry for Knights officials desperate to retain brother Connor. The 19-year-old played in the junior State of Origin game for NSW in 2024, and is viewed as one of the Knights' top prospects. However he's predominantly a fullback, meaning he'll struggle to crack the first-grade team while Ponga remains at the club. There was speculation earlier this year that Connor had drawn interest from the Bulldogs, but a family member moved to insist he was committed to remaining in Newcastle. RELATED: 'Real concern' for Panthers as Nathan Cleary floated for $3m exit Wayne Bennett 'ban' set to be upheld amid awful news about Latrell With Cooper Votano now heading to the Storm, it remains to be seen how his exit will affect Connor's future. The Storm have one of the best fullbacks in the game in Ryan Papenhuyzen, but he's also off contract at the end of 2026. There's a 'mutual' option in his deal to remain in 2027 if both he and the club agree, but he's also been floated as a top target for R360 and has admitted he'd consider it. As for Ponga, he stated on Thursday that he's committed to the Knights. The superstar fullback has reportedly hired a rugby union agent based in New Zealand, and has been discussed in meetings involving R360 offcials. But he wrote on social media: "Committed to the end of 2027. Excited about the vision of the club. Appreciate those that support me!"

Make no mistake: Liverpool have EMBARRASSED Newcastle in Hugo Ekitike talks

Liverpool embarrass Newcastle Just three days ago on Monday, it was reported by David Ornstein of The Athletic that Newcastle were looking to sign Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt, with the intention of him playing alongside Isak. Given this move was going to be extremely expensive for a player who would essentially be a back-up striker, doubts were expressed about the deal. Furthermore, an offer of €75m (£65m) was being looked at when the asking price was very clearly expressed to be €100m (£86m). A bold strategy. Then on Tuesday we got the news that Isak was approached by Liverpool and the ultimatum was delivered. Since Ekitike is a long-term target of Newcastle's this was a serious power move to make. A deal in the region of £120m was communicated to the Magpies, which would be a Premier League record fee, and the Reds' intent was laid out for all to see. Can you really reject such a high offer? Well, just in case, Liverpool made an official approach to Frankfurt regarding Ekitike's availability and just hours ago this morning, it was announced by Fabrizio Romano that Newcastle had left talks for the Frenchman, leaving Richard Hughes and Liverpool's recruiment team to have a free run at him. The assumption is that Newcastle responded to Liverpool's interest in Isak with the same 'not for sale' stance they have held all summer long, and in return, we can steal their No.1 transfer target. In case you're unsure about that last part, David Ornstein published a new report this morning that Newcastle's interest is turning to Yohan Wissa at Brentford no they've cooled their interest in Ekitike. So what does this all mean? Well, here's my view on things. Isak was always going to be a long-shot for Liverpool and so approaching Ekitike made sense. He's younger and he has a lower asking price, although of course it's still particularly high for a No. 9 without a track-record as a proven goalscorer. But if we considered Isak out of reach, then Liverpool's interest in the Frenchman is pretty innocuous. As such, all Newcastle had to gain was signing Ekitike. They held all the cards with Isak, because as we have seen, they were willing to reject a record-fee for him. He's seemingly priceless in their view. So with Liverpool progressing with him and Newcastle leaving the talks, it's clear who won that battle. Claims that 'the price has been driven up by Newcastle for Ekitike' are nonsense if we're honest, because the £65m bid was never going to be taken seriously. Frankfurt expected a far higher fee. Liverpool spending close to £70m-80m on him is merely a more realistic and respectful approach. And then we have to consider the situation that Newcastle have left themselves in, keeping Isak for this season at least and looking at bringing in Wissa - a 28-year-old striker with a £50m asking price. Of course, the Congo international had a brilliant campaign last season at Brentford playing next to Brian Mbuemo, but the fee required to sign him is high and he has just 12 months left on his deal. In addition, the situation with Mbuemo puts this approach at risk, because Manchester United are a few months into negotiations for the Cameroon forward and Brentford will not want to sell them both. As such, it's a race against time and David Ornstein has recently reported an improved bid of £65m plus £5m add-ons coming in for Mbeumo, which will hurt Newcastle fans because they've not even had a chance to make an opening bid for Wissa yet, so any intended deal might well collapse. Furthermore, even if they could sign Wissa, he would be absent for most of the winter because Congo are competing in the African Cup of Nations tournament this year, limiting his availability. So there we have it. Liverpool are now in direct communication with Frankfurt to sign Ekitike and bids will be exchanged in due course, with the Frenchman having already agreed personal terms, while Newcastle are sent back into the chaos of the transfer market, re-evaluating the options available. One of which is said to be the Reds' own Darwin Nunez, if BILD's German sources are to be believed. Also, if Isak doesn't receive a new contract that reflects his value to the club, then he could still be on the move in the years to come and Liverpool will be scouring once again. So in reality, there isn't a debate to be had about which team has come out on top. The Reds have embarrassed Newcastle.

Revealed: Why Florian Wirtz Chose to Sign for Liverpool Over Bayern Munich

Florian Wirtz: Why Liverpool Move Won Over Bayern Munich Florian Wirtz's father and agent, Hans-Joachim Wirtz, has explained why the German playmaker chose Liverpool over Bayern Munich this summer. Last month, Liverpool secured the signature of Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth £116 million, setting a new club record. The agreement includes £100 million guaranteed, with a further £16 million in add-ons. If all conditions are met, it would also become the British transfer record, surpassing Chelsea's £107 million move for Enzo Fernandez in 2023. Liverpool's Ambition Captures Wirtz's Attention Wirtz, now 22, arrives at Anfield after an outstanding spell at Leverkusen, where he made 197 appearances and scored 57 goals. His contributions were key in Leverkusen's historic Bundesliga title win in the 2023/24 season. Following his transfer, Wirtz spoke about his motivation to join the Premier League champions under Arne Slot. 'I would like to win everything every year. First of all, we have to do our work,' Wirtz said after completing his move. 'Last season they won the Premier League so my goal is for sure to win it again and also to go further in the Champions League. I'm really ambitious. 'I'm really excited to have a new adventure in front of me. This was also a big point of my thoughts: that I want to have something completely new, to go out of the Bundesliga and to join the Premier League. 'I will see how I can perform there. I hope I can do my best. 'I spoke also with some players who played there and they told me that it's perfect for me and every pitch is perfect, you can enjoy every game. I'm really looking forward to playing my first game.' X: @LFC Arne Slot's Influence Was Key Liverpool were not the only club keen on Wirtz, with Manchester City and Bayern Munich both expressing strong interest. City eventually turned to Rayan Cherki from Lyon, but Bayern remained in the hunt, especially after Jamal Musiala's serious leg injury at the Club World Cup. Hans-Joachim Wirtz revealed that the Liverpool manager played a decisive role in shaping his son's decision. 'Arne Slot was able to convince Florian personally. He's also a very pleasant person,' Wirtz said. 'Arne Slot presented his playing philosophy, the team tactics in possession and pressing, and how Florian can develop his strengths in these areas. That made a decisive impression on Florian.' Bayern Munich's Efforts Fell Just Short Despite Bayern's determined pursuit, the decision ultimately came down to subtle factors. 'Vincent Kompany also had very good thoughts and ideas about how he wanted to integrate Florian into the Bayern Munich team,' Hans-Joachim Wirtz added. 'In the end, it was nuances that ultimately influenced the decision, which had to do with the different sporting situations and the role for Florian. 'And financially, there were no major differences between the two clubs anyway. Once again: Bayern Munich really tried hard, but a decision had to be made.' Hans-Joachim Wirtz also shared details of his final discussion with Bayern president Uli Hoeneß. 'We had spoken several times before, so he was as objective and fair as I had come to know him. But of course he couldn't hide his disappointment. After all, he had personally put a lot of effort into this transfer.' With Liverpool now preparing for the new season, the arrival of Florian Wirtz signals their intent to build on last year's success and challenge for honours at home and in Europe.
