Star centre Lafai confirms Salford departure
Tim Lafai has become the latest player to announce that he is leaving troubled Salford Red Devils.The Samoa centre is heading back to Australia to be with his family after spending three seasons with Salford.Lafai, 33, scored 21 tries in 63 Super League games for the Red Devils and helped the club reach the play-offs in two of his three campaigns.His departure follows that of half-back Marc Sneyd to Warrington Wolves and prop Brad Singleton's switch to Castleford Tigers.Salford are 11th in the Super League after a very difficult start to the season.
They have been under sustainability cap restrictions amid continued financial uncertainty following a proposed takeover, with head coach Paul Rowley unable to select his strongest team.Delays in funds being transferred by the investment group headed by Swiss banker Dario Berta also led to February's wages for players and staff being held up.Now Lafai has been granted an early release from his contract.He played for his country in the World Cup final in 2022, and also made it into the Super League Dream Team that year after starring in an exciting Salford side.They finished sixth that year, seventh in 2023 and fourth last season with Lafai a big weapon in their side and he leaves with good memories of his stint in England. "The boys I've played alongside present and past, it's been a rollercoaster of a ride, but one of the best times I've had here," Lafai told the club website. "One of the best playing groups and the staff who always made me feel welcome, put up with my nonsense – it's been a great time."

Former England captain Owen Farrell seals Saracens return
The former England captain called time on his 16-year stay with the Gallagher Premiership side at the end of last season. But fly-half Farrell has agreed to leave Racing 92 and return to Saracens after a disappointing, injury-disrupted campaign with the Top 14 outfit. He told the club's official website: 'Saracens is my home and the opportunity to come back is one that excites me enormously. 'Having watched from afar this season, it is clear to see that the club has incredible potential, and I can't wait to get back in the mix for the 25/26 season.' Farrell made his Saracens debut in 2008, 11 days after his 17th birthday, and amassed 256 appearances before heading for France. The returning Saracens fly-half has won 112 caps for England (David Davies/PA) He has won 112 England caps and made six Test appearances for the British and Irish Lions, although he has not been included in the squad – coached by his father Andy – for this summer's tour of Australia. Farrell has not played Test rugby since the 2023 World Cup, initially taking a break to prioritise his mental wellbeing, before his move abroad made him ineligible for selection. Saracens director of rugby Mark McCall is hoping the vastly-experienced stand-off will play a role in what he believes will be an exciting future for the club. McCall said: 'Owen has Saracens in his DNA. His competitive spirit is woven into the fabric of this club and we are delighted he has chosen to come home. 'He returns to a young group full of potential, players eager to learn, play and push for success. We know he will love being part of where this group, and this club, are headed.'

Gareth Bale part of group seeking Plymouth takeover
The Telegraph were first to report that the 35-year-old former Real Madrid and Wales forward was part of the group seeking to buy Argyle. The PA news agency understands the group featuring Bale has registered an interest in buying Argyle, but the process is at a very early stage. Should the deal go through, Bale would be the latest big sporting name to be associated with an EFL club. Bale's former Real team-mate Luka Modric became an investor and co-owner in Championship side Swansea in April, while ex-NFL quarterback Tom Brady has a minority stake in Birmingham. Plymouth declined to comment. Bale retired from football in January 2023 at the age of 33. He won five Champions League titles with Real and is the men's all-time record goalscorer for Wales with 41 in 111 caps. Bale featured for Wales at the 2022 World Cup – their first appearance at the global finals since 1958 – and at the Euros in 2016 and 2020.

England will want to get value for money out of Jofra Archer
Archer has been on a full central contract for nearly six years but stress reactions in his right elbow and lower back have been chiefly responsible for his absence from Tests since winning the last of his 13 caps in February 2021. Established again in the white-ball ranks in a carefully orchestrated comeback, a spanner was thrown in the works for a Test return when Archer injured his right thumb at this year's Indian Premier League. Out of this week's opener against India at Headingley, he has nevertheless been tipped to feature later in the five-match Test series and Broad can understand why England might roll the dice with Archer this summer. 'I'm assuming England have had him on a red-ball contract for a few years since he last made an impact,' Broad told the PA news agency. 'They'll be wanting to get some repayment out of that. 'I'm sure he'll play a part at some stage if he's fit. It will just be making sure his body is hard enough to be able to do the job. 'That is a really, really difficult question to answer because you can only really get match fit for a Test match by playing red-ball cricket. 'It will be a huge gamble. If we see him in whites for England this summer, there will be a lot of people chewing fingernails and praying a bone doesn't crack.' Archer's last first-class outing was four years ago but he has been pencilled in for Sussex's County Championship match against Durham on June 22 to check his readiness for Test cricket. He has shown glimpses in recent months of the dazzling 2019 World Cup and Ashes form that marked him out as a generational talent but Broad urged caution about expecting his former England team-mate to hit those heights again. 'It's impossible to know,' Broad, who will be a pundit for the series as a Sky Sports cricket expert, added. 'He didn't look match fit at the Champions Trophy. He bowled three or four nice overs and then struggled. He seemed to develop more of a match intensity at the IPL, which is mentally taxing but you're only bowling four overs. 'When you come into Test match cricket and suddenly your distance is 50km over five days, it's a completely different question. 'Because he's had so many injury setbacks, any time he pulls on an England shirt, it's a massive occasion for him.
