‘Absolutely legendary': New Yorkers reflect on Irv Gotti's local roots
HOLLIS, Queens (PIX11) — Such well-known figures as Jennifer Lopez, JayZ, DMX, and Ashanti are not only household names because they were catapulted to fame by hip-hop mogul Irv Gotti.
They were also local, New York talents that Gotti found close to home, intentionally, and then developed them as worldwide brands.

Gotti's strategy of recruiting from a geographic radius centered around his home neighborhood in Queens was being lauded by his many admirers both at home and abroad, following his passing.
One example of Irv Gotti's reach was evident at a local sound recording institution near the neighborhood where he grew up, at VP Records, in Jamaica, Queens.
The store's manager, Ramon Jones, said that he was born and raised in rural Jamaica — the Caribbean country. Still, he said, as he grew up, he knew and listened to artists produced by Gotti and his record label, Murder, Inc., which Gotti founded with his brother, Chris.
'Love the music, and the production, and the work ethic,' said Jones.
The store he manages is half a mile from Hollis, Queens, where Irv Gotti grew up. As a DJ there, starting in his teens, Gotti sought out artists who'd come into his social and cultural orbit, and over time, he figured out how to make them big.
Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar led one of the best Grammys in years. Has the awards show transformed?
Tarsha Jones, the radio and television personality known as Miss Jones, summed up Gotti's approach.
'One concept,' she said, in an interview, 'and he believed in it — local, homegrown talent.'
Miss Jones knew Irv Gotti, and still interacts with artists he had produced. His impact, Jones said, is enduring.
'The truth is that the talent and the songs were right for that time,' she said. 'It's timeless music. We're still playing it today.'
That was the case at an insurance office in Hollis on Thursday, near the corner of Jamaica Avenue and Francis Lewis Boulevard.
There, office staffers Yaneke Arrington and Shana Heath Prophete were busy at work, but on Thursday they curated their background music to serve as a tribute to the fallen impresario from their neighborhood.
'We were playing the 90s R&B hits, and hip hop records and stuff,' Heath Prophete said. They were well aware that many of the songs that they'd chosen to pipe into their office were produced by Irv Gotti, who they said is gone, but by no means forgotten.
'Too young, yes, too young,.' said Arrington. Gotti was 54 years old.
It's a loss that the women, who said that neighbors and friends tell stories about many encounters with Gotti over the years in the community, felt personally.
'Absolutely legendary,' Heath Prophete said about her hero. 'It cannot be denied the impact he had on music.'
Gotti's family has not provided a cause of death. He had been open about having cardiac issues in relation to diabetes. The family is now planning his memorial service and funeral.

Cops Contradict Claim Made by Husband of Murdered TV Star
Cops investigating the murder of Jonathan Joss have told the Daily Beast that the King of the Hill star did not make a single report of being threatened before his death, contradicting his husband's claims that they made 'multiple' complaints which went ignored. Joss, 59, was gunned down Sunday during a confrontation with his neighbor, Sigfredo Ceja Alvarez, with whom the voice actor had allegedly been feuding. In the aftermath, Joss's grieving husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales used the star's Facebook page to claim the pair had been 'harassed regularly by individuals [who were] openly homophobic,' suggesting Joss' sexual orientation played a role in his murder. A police source told the Daily Beast that the force had found no evidence that prejudice had played a part in the killing, and that homophobia had not featured in its report sent to the District Attorney. Speaking on condition of anonymity, the source said: 'We have found no evidence of homophobia as a motive during our investigation of this tragic incident. 'If that changes in the course of the investigation, our detectives will, of course, inform the District Attorney.' The San Antonio Police Department cast doubt on such claims in a June 2 statement posted to X, writing, 'Despite online claims of this being a hate crime, currently the investigation has found no evidence to indicate that ... Mr. Joss's murder was related to his sexual orientation.' However, in a Thursday press conference update, the police department appeared to wildly change its tune as Chief of Police William P. McManus apologized for releasing a statement on Joss' case before a full investigation. McManus called the statement 'way, way, way premature.' 'It was way too early in the process for any statement of that nature to have been issued' he added. 'I will own that.' Addressing calls for Joss' murder to be treated as a hate crime, McManus explained during the brief update, which lasted around 7 minutes, that 'hate crimes' are not treated as separate charges in Texas. 'Instead they are addressed through sentencing enhancements,' McManus said. 'A hate crime designation can be attached to a charge and elevated.' In his Facebook post, Kern de Gonzales alleged that Joss' shooter had been 'yelling violent homophobic slurs at us' before he shot Joss—who voiced John Redcorn in the popular and long-running animated show King of the Hill—in what he later described as a 'hate crime.' He added, 'We reported these threats to law enforcement multiple times and nothing was done,' saying the home was burned down 'after over two years of threats from people in the area who repeatedly told us they would set it on fire.' The Daily Beast has attempted to reach Mr Kern de Gonzales for comment. A spokesperson for San Antonio Police Department said in a statement issued to the Daily Beast Wednesday: 'The San Antonio Police Department has responded to Mr. Joss's residence over 70 times in the last two years for various incidents. None of these incidents involved reports of threats of any kind.' Alvarez—who police said immediately admitted to shooting Joss—has been charged with murder and released under house arrest on a $200,000 bond, with a pre-trial hearing set for August 19. He posted on his own Facebook account Wednesday: 'Am I surprised the police investigated themselves and found out they did nothing wrong? Am I surprised they released my husband's killer after I spoke out about them? No. 'I have no faith in the criminal justice system. I only have faith that those outside a uniform who loved my husband will see to justice that doesn't cost the American taxpayers.' Kern de Gonzales also posted a TikTok video the same day in which in which he said he 'won't stop talking about this.' 'I'm not going to let the SAPD or anyone else silence the fact that this was a hate crime, and I just won't be silenced.' Chief William. P. McManus will on Thursday evening attend a neighborhood forum featuring San Antonio Pride. The police source said the force had decided to speak out, including releasing this statement to the Daily Beast, to reassure the public that it was handling the investigation sensitively and properly.

Andrew Barth Feldman's Muppet*Vision 3D tribute is absolutely wonderful
Andrew Barth Feldman's Muppet*Vision 3D tribute is absolutely wonderful Since nothing lasts forever and the cruel specter of time claims all things sacred, Disney's Hollywood Studio will shut the doors to Muppet*Vision 3D after Saturday. After more than 30 years of "state-of-the-art" 3D effects and saluting all nations (but mostly America), Muppets maestro Jim Henson's last true masterwork will eventually be replaced with a Monsters, Inc. section of the park and plays its last show this weekend. While the attraction never got the consistent attention of, say, a roller coaster or a landmark dark ride, it's still one of the best experiences Disney Parks ever crafted. It's a testament to Henson's genius that it never lost its zeal in the decades since its opening, and there really wasn't ever anything quite like it to watch in a theater. Last year, I wrote that Muppet*Vision 3D is "a timeless piece of Disney history that should stand for as long as the theme park surrounding it stands, and closing it would feel completely antithetical to the way Disney treats its other classic attractions, with deep reverence and keen understanding of how awful it would be to snuff out that corner of irreplaceable Disney magic forever." Well, Disney Parks clearly didn't read that or, y'know, care, because the attraction is headed to the big theme park in the sky after Saturday's final shows. To help all of us cope with such a colossal loss, actor Andrew Barth Feldman crafted an absolutely brilliant tribute to the Muppets attraction that we know Kermit and the gang would be proud to watch. Seriously, this is just wonderful. Feldman teaming up with Defunctland's Kevin Perjurer to send off Muppet*Vision 3D with a hysterical bang is just the best way any of this could go We're going to miss Henson's great attraction like all get out, but we will fire this up whenever we need a smile... and the YouTube bootleg footage of the attraction itself, which you can watch below as many times as you'd like. RIP Muppet*Vision 3D. We will miss you, your cannon fire, your cranky old men in the balcony, your penguin symphony and your floating cream pies. Sweetums forever.
