Harvey Elliott shrugs off painful knee-slide celebration to lead England to U-21 final
BRATISLAVA, Slovakia (AP) — Harvey Elliott's knee-slide celebration was brief — and painful.
The Liverpool midfielder scored twice to help England beat the Netherlands 2-1 on Wednesday and advance to the Under-21 European Championship final.
Elliott went into his celebration after opening the scoring in 62nd minute. But instead of sliding, he hit the dry pitch and tumbled forward, leaving a divot behind him.
He told broadcaster Channel 4 after the semifinal that his knee was 'hurting' and added 'hopefully it's nothing too silly.'
'I forgot the pitch was ridiculously dry. It's the price I've got to pay, but it is what it is,' said Elliott, who played on after the close-range strike.
After Noah Ohio had equalized for the Dutch, Elliott netted a left-footed winner in the 86th.
England, the defending champion, will play Germany in the final on Saturday.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer pitched five innings and gave up three runs Wednesday night in his first appearance for the Toronto Blue Jays since March. 'That's a good check-mark sign,' Scherzer said. 'Maybe something that you look for as you're coming back and as you're ramping back up. So good in that regard. The 40-year-old Scherzer threw his most pitches since last July 25, throwing 55 of 83 pitches for strikes. He gave up a two-out double in the fourth, and a pitch-clock violation led to one of his walks. 'I made a bad pitch, so I'm not going to blame that on the clock,' Scherzer said. (AP) — Monterrey scored three goals in a 10-minute span of the first half and went on to defeat the Urawa Red Diamonds 4-0 on Wednesday night and advance to the knockout rounds in the Club World Cup. Monterrey finished second in Group E behind Inter Milan, which defeated River Plate 2-0 in a simultaneous game in Seattle. Monterry plays Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday at Atlanta in the round of 16. The match drew just 14,312 to the 89,702-capacity Rose Bowl.
