PA Game Commission finalizes 2025-26 seasons, bag limits
PENNSYLVANIA (WTAJ) — Hunters and trappers can now take a look ahead at what's to come with the finalization of the 2025-26 seasons and bag limits.
The Pennsylvania Game Commission has finalized everything, including a few changes from last season. Among the changes are two to the after-Christmas firearms season for antlerless deer, one to statewide archery bear season, and one to the season limits for snowshoe hares.
Bedford County native announced as state park manager
After-Christmas extended firearms season
The extended firearms deer season will be open on all Deer Management Assistance Program properties statewide from Dec. 26-Jan. 24, 2026, with participating hunters needing a valid permit for the property.
An extended firearms deer season to run Jan. 2-19, 2026 will be held in Wildlife Management Unit 4C, where Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) was recently detected.
Bear archery season
The archery season (and only the archery season) will be shortened to one week. The season this year will take place from Oct. 18-25. The only exemption is for WMUs 2B, 5B, 5C and 5D which will retain their longer formats.
Snowshoe hare trapping limits
There will be a season limit of three hares per hunter. The reduction protects against overharvest in isolated segments of the hare population.
Along with the changes the Game Commission announced that there will be 1,312,000 antlerless deer licenses available for the 2025-26 season, which is an increase from the previous year. There will also be 140 elk licenses.
A full list of bag limits and dates for this year's hunting and trapping can be found on the Pennsylvania Game Commission website.

Jax Forrest's World Trials Championship match rescheduled
(WTAJ) — July 14 is the new date that Bishop McCort Jax Forrest is circling on his calendar to try and make the 2025 Senior World Championships. Forrest had his Final X match, which decides Team USA, delayed earlier this week due to a request from his opponent, Vito Arujau. Their world trials championship match will now move from New Jersey to North Dakota to be held alongside the junior nationals inside the Fargodome. Round one for the best-of-three series will begin at 4:20 p.m. (EST). Since Arujau was a senior world medalist last year, he was able to request a delay due to an injury or illness. The winner between Arujau and Forrest will represent the U.S. at 61 kilograms for the 2025 Senior World Championships in Croatia this September. Forrest has been on an unprecedented run lately as a high schooler. Last year, he made the U.S. Olympic Team Trials and qualified for the national team. In April, he defeated former NCAA champions to win the U.S. Open to qualify for Final X. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Aaron Rodgers to sign with Pittsburgh Steelers ahead of minicamp, per NFL insiders
PITTSBURGH, Pa. (WTAJ) — Aaron Rodgers is trading green for gold this offseason. The 20-year veteran, four-time NFL MVP and longtime face of the Green Bay Packers, who spent the last two seasons with the New York Jets, is set to join the Pittsburgh Steelers ahead of next week's mandatory minicamp, according to multiple reports. Before his time in New York, Rodgers was previously one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL with Green Bay. With the Packers, Rodgers won Super Bowl XLV back in 2011 against the Steelers. NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported that Rodgers informed the team he'll fly to Pittsburgh on Friday and sign before minicamp. ESPN's Adam Schefter also confirmed the move, stating Rodgers plans to participate in team activities next week. Rodgers, 41, is expected to begin his 21st NFL season wearing the Black and Gold, marking one of the most high-profile quarterback additions to the Steelers since signing Russell Wilson in the 2024 season. Pittsburgh was limited on its quarterback options at this point after Justin Fields signed with Rodgers' previous team and Russell Wilson inked a deal with the New York Giants. While the Steelers have seen uncertainty at quarterback since Ben Roethlisberger's retirement after the 2021-2022 season, the addition of a seasoned and decorated veteran like Rodgers could signal a new chapter of stability and championship aspirations in Pittsburgh. Special Olympics Pennsylvania summer games set to kickoff in State College
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (WTAJ) — The 55th annual Special Olympics Pennsylvania Summer Games are getting set to kick off in State College. Over 2,000 athletes and 750 coaches will travel to Penn State for three days of competition in athletics, equestrian, basketball, golf, gymnastics, softball, swimming, and tennis. This is a weekend to compete, have fun, and build lifelong friendships. 'Memories, building friendships, remembering how hard they've worked, what they've overcome, the challenges, and having the courage to show up and give their best,' Chief People Officer & Executive Vice President of Operations for Special Olympics Pennsylvania, Pam Velasquez, said. While all of the focus is on the athletes competing, behind the scenes, over 1,000 volunteers will be assisting over the three days. However, they say they could use a few hundred more. 'Our volunteers are the backbone of everything we do. We still have open spots available over the next few days. So please come out and join us. There are many ways to be involved,' Velasquez said. One couple has been volunteering with Special Olympics for over 20 years. Robert & Christine Masters began volunteering when their son was 8-years-old. They volunteer because of the energy, excitement, and fun they have during the event. 'It doesn't matter how good or bad a day you're having, if you come down here and you hang out with these athletes for any length of time, you will be having a great day when you leave, and so that's why it's worth coming back,' Robert Masters said. The hard work the Masters see during the weekend is inspiring. 'I think every day when I work with Special Olympics athletes, the kind of hurdles they have to overcome just to get out of bed in the morning and to get here more so than anything I experience, it just makes the rest of the things I might be worried about melt away and I just enjoy spending time with them, their smiles really are the best thing,' Christine Masters said. The games are set to kick off with an opening ceremony on Thursday, June 5, at 7:15 p.m. For a full schedule, follow the link here. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
