STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (WTAJ) — The 55th annual Special Olympics Pennsylvania Summer Games are getting set to kick off in State College.
Over 2,000 athletes and 750 coaches will travel to Penn State for three days of competition in athletics, equestrian, basketball, golf, gymnastics, softball, swimming, and tennis. This is a weekend to compete, have fun, and build lifelong friendships.
'Memories, building friendships, remembering how hard they've worked, what they've overcome, the challenges, and having the courage to show up and give their best,' Chief People Officer & Executive Vice President of Operations for Special Olympics Pennsylvania, Pam Velasquez, said.
While all of the focus is on the athletes competing, behind the scenes, over 1,000 volunteers will be assisting over the three days. However, they say they could use a few hundred more.
'Our volunteers are the backbone of everything we do. We still have open spots available over the next few days. So please come out and join us. There are many ways to be involved,' Velasquez said.
One couple has been volunteering with Special Olympics for over 20 years. Robert & Christine Masters began volunteering when their son was 8-years-old. They volunteer because of the energy, excitement, and fun they have during the event.
'It doesn't matter how good or bad a day you're having, if you come down here and you hang out with these athletes for any length of time, you will be having a great day when you leave, and so that's why it's worth coming back,' Robert Masters said.
The hard work the Masters see during the weekend is inspiring.
'I think every day when I work with Special Olympics athletes, the kind of hurdles they have to overcome just to get out of bed in the morning and to get here more so than anything I experience, it just makes the rest of the things I might be worried about melt away and I just enjoy spending time with them, their smiles really are the best thing,' Christine Masters said.
The games are set to kick off with an opening ceremony on Thursday, June 5, at 7:15 p.m. For a full schedule, follow the link here.

The race to find a thief: Berlin police investigating after Torch Run signs were stolen

BERLIN, Conn. (WTNH) — Anticipation and excitement surround the Law Enforcement Torch Run for the Special Olympics each year in Berlin. Year after year, students line the route in front of their school to cheer on the officers. Annual Special Olympics Torch Run begins in Connecticut This year, there was also disappointment. The signs, which usually line Veterans Way, were stolen sometime between Monday when they were placed there, and Wednesday, when Mark DePinto, the officer who organizes Berlin's leg of the run, realized they were gone. 'He works very hard for this to come out perfect and that was like a setback to him,' Carmen DePinto, Mark's wife, said. It was too late to replace the signs before Thursday's torch run. The signs show the businesses and organizations which support the torch run and the Special Olympics. DePinto's daughter Christine is one of the athletes. On the day of the race, she rides in the truck which leads the police officers through town. 'She gets excited to be part of it every year,' DePinto said. 'She gets so excited she don't even want to go to her job.' 'It's just… it's hard to understand why somebody would pull those signs out and take them for a cause as good as the Special Olympics,' Berlin Deputy Police Chief Drew Gallupe said. Berlin police have launched a full investigation and say whoever is responsible will face larceny charges. 'We're reviewing video from surrounding businesses and we would ask anyone that has information or saw someone taking the signs or knows who took them if they would call us at the Berlin Police Department,' Gallupe said. Berlin police say there were about a half a dozen signs stolen from Veterans Way and because of that, those businesses and organizations didn't get the recognition they deserve for supporting this worthy cause. One of them was a local fire department. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Aaron Rodgers to sign with Pittsburgh Steelers ahead of minicamp, per NFL insiders

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (WTAJ) — Aaron Rodgers is trading green for gold this offseason. The 20-year veteran, four-time NFL MVP and longtime face of the Green Bay Packers, who spent the last two seasons with the New York Jets, is set to join the Pittsburgh Steelers ahead of next week's mandatory minicamp, according to multiple reports. Before his time in New York, Rodgers was previously one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL with Green Bay. With the Packers, Rodgers won Super Bowl XLV back in 2011 against the Steelers. NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported that Rodgers informed the team he'll fly to Pittsburgh on Friday and sign before minicamp. ESPN's Adam Schefter also confirmed the move, stating Rodgers plans to participate in team activities next week. Rodgers, 41, is expected to begin his 21st NFL season wearing the Black and Gold, marking one of the most high-profile quarterback additions to the Steelers since signing Russell Wilson in the 2024 season. Pittsburgh was limited on its quarterback options at this point after Justin Fields signed with Rodgers' previous team and Russell Wilson inked a deal with the New York Giants. While the Steelers have seen uncertainty at quarterback since Ben Roethlisberger's retirement after the 2021-2022 season, the addition of a seasoned and decorated veteran like Rodgers could signal a new chapter of stability and championship aspirations in Pittsburgh.
