Best strawberry picking spots in Scotland for a fun family day out this summer
Scotland is home to some of the UK's most beloved pick-your-own fruit farms, with several sites earning national recognition for their scenic beauty, family -friendly facilities and seasonal produce.
According to new research by Verdant Leisure, Cairnie Fruit Farm in Cupar, Fife, has been named the best strawberry-picking destination in Scotland this summer.
Scoring an impressive 19.4 on the index, the 120-acre site includes 45 acres of fruit fields and offers visitors the chance to pick a range of summer favourites, including strawberries, raspberries, cherries and blackcurrants.
Cairnie is more than just a fruit farm. Its popular Funyard is a major draw for families, while its on-site café is celebrated for serving freshly baked goods made daily. The attraction, nestled in the Fife countryside, has become a seasonal staple for locals and tourists alike.

Not far behind is Craigie's Farm and Deli in South Queensferry, which ranked as the second-best strawberry field in Scotland and also earned a spot among the UK's top ten, coming in seventh overall.
The farm appeals to a wide range of visitors with its play barns, jam-making parties and petting areas, including Shetland ponies, a particular favourite for children.
In third place is Charleton Farm in Montrose, Angus. Long cherished by locals, the farm continues to be a go-to destination during the summer months.
It features a welcoming café that serves hearty meals prepared using home-grown and locally sourced ingredients, making it a well-rounded destination for food and fruit lovers alike.
Nationally, the top title went to Claremont Farm in Wirral, which secured the number one position on Verdant Leisure's list with a total score of 39.6.
With a Google review rating of 4.4 and a social media following exceeding 35,000, Claremont has expanded its appeal beyond fruit picking.
Its café and farm shop host a wide array of community-focused events, from cooking demos and food festivals to school visits and wellness workshops.
In second place across the UK is Crockford Bridge Farm in Addlestone, Surrey.
With an index score of 22.9, the site is praised for its wide selection of pick-your-own produce, available throughout the growing season. The farm has become a go-to destination in the South East for both locals and tourists.

Garson Farm in Esher, Surrey, rounded out the top three with a score of 22.6. As one of the largest pick-your-own farms in the country, Garson offers tractor rides, fresh produce and family events throughout the summer, making it an ideal destination for visitors of all ages.

ScotRail train evacuated after carriages fill with smoke and ‘strange smell'
Passengers were left shaken this morning after a ScotRail train travelling from Inverness to Glasgow Queen Street filled with smoke and a "strange smell". Forty passengers had to be evacuated from a ScotRail train after carriages began filling with smoke and a "strange smell". Fire crews raced to the train, which had left Inverness at 5.36am today bound for Glasgow Queen Street, after smoke was spotted on board. The service came to a halt between Gleneagles and Dunblane with travellers taken off amid a strong, pungent odour and put on another service heading for Perth. No injuries were reported. Passengers were told their tickets would be accepted on rail replacement services. ScotRail has warned of potential delays and changes on routes between Glasgow Queen Street and Inverness/Aberdeen, as well as Edinburgh Waverley and Inverness. "I dozed off and woke up when the train stopped near Gleneagles and there was quite a lot of smoke in the carriage. The person then came over the loud speaker and asked us to either move to the end carriage or the first carriage. "At that point, I stood up and there was a pretty heavy smell of smoke and there was quite a lot of it in the carriage." He said: "The 05:36 Inverness to Glasgow Queen Street service was brought to a stop near Gleneagles this morning after reports of smoke being detected in one of the carriages. Our immediate priority is the safety and wellbeing of everyone on board, and customers have been safely assisted from the train." A message by ScotRail on X this morning read: "Due to a broken down train between Gleneagles and Dunblane all lines are blocked. Please keep an eye on our app/website for live service updates." It later said: "A rescue train has been dispatched to assist the broken-down train," and that was followed by a post, shortly before midday, saying: "The broken-down train is now on the move back to the depot and we're working to get trains and crew back into position." And on the ScotRail website it says of trouble between Gleneagles and Dunblane: "Train services running through these stations are returning to normal but some services will still be cancelled, delayed or revised. Disruption is expected to last until around 13:30 today (01 August)."

The Scottish beach just outside of Edinburgh named 'best in the country'
August is officially here, which means we are in the final stretch of summer. Don't fret, though, as you still have plenty of time to make the most of the season. When the weather is nice, nothing hits quite like a day at the beach. While there is certainly no shortage of fabulous bays in Scotland, the Daily Record's latest Walk of the Week was just named the best in the country. Gullane Beach is a sandy bay in East Lothian, around 20 miles out of Edinburgh. It is one of the most renowned beaches along the East Lothian coast. On Wednesday, July 30, holiday rental portal Holidu analysed Google Maps user data for over 9,500 beaches to reveal the most loved UK beaches for 2025. Gullane topped the list for Scotland with a rating of 4.8 out of five. Also known as Gullane Bents, the bay is family -friendly and is a popular destination for activities such as windsurfing and kitesurfing. If it is a more relaxing day out you are looking for, it is also perfect for sunbathing as you listen to the soothing sounds of the waves. The experts praised Gullane for its magnificent views out over the Firth of Forth and its golden sands. It was also singled out as a top destination for golf lovers, with famous courses such as Muirfield and Archerfield Links just a short walk away. Meanwhile, after you are done soaking in the views on the beach, the town of Gullane offers a variety of popular food and drink venues. Among these is The Bonnie Badger pub and restaurant with rooms, where you can enjoy delicious seafood dishes. Holidu wrote: "Gullane Beach in East Lothian, Scotland, is a true Scottish standout, uniquely blending stunning natural beauty with a world-renowned golfing backdrop. This expansive golden sand beach offers breathtaking panoramic views across the Firth of Forth to Edinburgh and Fife. "However, what truly sets Gullane apart is its direct adjacency to some of Scotland's most prestigious golf courses like Gullane Golf Club and Muirfield, making it a unique destination where the pristine shoreline meets legendary fairways." Dad's holiday to Greece turns to nightmare as desperate family make plea

A British dad is stuck in Greece with pneumonia and suspected cancer after a dream holiday turned into a nightmare earlier this month. Alan, from Somerset, checked into a clinic on Sunday, July 6 and was told he needed antibiotics for a chest infection. However, as reported by Somerset Live, after being transferred to a hospital his step-daughter says he was bluntly told "antibiotics won't cure cancer". Liza Whitmore says he needs to be home in the UK for a biopsy, where doctors will be able to confirm a cancer diagnosis and give more details plus a prognosis. He is now being treated for pneumonia, but needs to be home for cancer treatment, according to his family. Liza, who was forced to go home to the UK without him, said: "Time is not on our side. If it is cancer, we need to get him home for treatment." Liza has approached the British Embassy for help, but they were not able to finance Alan's return to the UK. They advised her to set up a fundraiser to cover costs for his treatment in Greece and for a flight home. At time of writing, the fundraiser has raised £1,703. However, Liza owes €14,194.74 to Athens Hospital where he is still being treated with half of it due today and the other half due in August - and more still is needed for a flight home. Liza has warned others about planning carefully before going on holiday. She says they did not declare a benign tumour that Alan was diagnosed with the year previously as he felt well and they did not believe it was relevant - but now it appears this declaration failure has made their insurance void. She also urged people going abroad to remember to bring a valid EHIC card (European Health Insurance Card), to declare everything on their travel insurance application and to request a 'fit to fly' certificate if necessary.
