America team at world swimming battles case of 'acute gastroenteritis' that damages performance
SINGAPORE: The United States team at the swimming world championships in Singapore is battling a case of "acute gastroenteritis" that compromised performances on Sunday, the opening day of eight days of competition in the pool. Nikki Warner, the spokeswoman for USA Swimming, confirmed the outbreak to The Associated Press and said it had its roots at a training camp the American team held in Phuket, Thailand, before arriving in Singapore. She said all American swimmers had traveled to Singapore. She declined to say how many had been affected with the infectious diarrhea. At least three clearly have been impacted: Torri Huske, Luca Mijatovic and Claire Weinstein. Defending Olympic 100-meter butterfly champion Huske was withdrawn from preliminary heats of her event on Sunday. The team initially said she was pulled to focus on relay events. American 16-year-old Mijatovic swam the prelims of the 400 freestyle. His time of 3:59.68 was almost 15 seconds off his entry time, and it was clear he was under duress as he swam. Weinstein, a promising 18 year old, was also pulled from the 400 freestyle. Katie Ledecky, the most famous swimmer on the American team, performed normally in her preliminary session on Sunday and did not appear to be affected. The United States swim team is trying to rebound from a difficult time a year ago at the Paris Olympics. The Americans won only eight gold medals, their lowest total since the 1988 Seoul Olympics. That relatively low total still topped the medal table followed by Australia. The men won only one gold medal in Paris, and that group is hoping to rebound in Singapore with a very young men's team. Head coach Greg Meehan said it's the youngest in memory.

Raducanu misses out on Washington Open final
Washington, July 27 (UNI) Britain's Emma Raducanu has been beaten 6-4 6-3 by Russia's Anna Kalinskaya in the semi-finals of the Washington Open. The 22-year-old, whose run in the United States has ensured she will regain her British number one spot from Katie Boulter, served five aces early on, but could not convert any of her four break point opportunities Kalinskaya, ranked two places below Raducanu at 48th in the world, capitalised with a break in the ninth game on her way to clinching the first set on Saturday. The two exchanged early breaks in the second set before the 26-year-old Russian pulled ahead once more, taking a lead that proved decisive and breaking again to seal the win. "It was an interesting match. It's nice to play against Emma," said Kalinskaya, who is aiming to win her first WTA 500 title. "I'm proud of myself. I stayed aggressive and stuck to my plan." Kalinskaya will face Leylah Fernandez in Sunday's final after the Canadian edged out third seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan in an epic encounter that included three tie-breaks, according to a BBC news. Fernandez, who Raducanu beat to win her US Open title in 2021, prevailed 6-7 (2-7) 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (7-3) after three hours and 12 minutes. In the men's event, Australia's Alex de Minaur secured a 6-4 6-3 semi-final victory over French lucky loser Corentin Moutet. De Minaur will play Spain's Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the final, after the 12th seed defeated American fourth seed Ben Shelton 6-2 7-5. UNI BM

Claressa Shields unanimously outpoints Lani Daniels, successfully defending heavyweight belts
Claressa Shields unanimously outpointed Lani Daniels on Saturday night, successfully defending all her belts as the first undisputed heavyweight champion in women's boxing. The 30-year-old Claressa, a two-time Olympic champion, improved to 17-0 in front of 15,366 fans at Little Caesars Arena. The 36-year-old Lani, the IBF light heavyweight champion, dropped to 11-3-2. She had won seven in a row. Former super-welterweight champion Tony Harrison beat Edward Diaz of the Dominican Republic by unanimous decision after being knocked down in the ninth round of the 10-round fight. Harrison, who is from Detroit, improved to 30-4-1 in his first fight since losing his belt to Tim Tszyu more than 10 years ago. In the main event, Lani danced and shuffled along the ropes for two rounds to stay away from Claressa, who was patient until unleashing a flurry of combinations late in both rounds. Lani didn't run in the following rounds, and Claressa took advantage with punishing blows to the body and head. Lani fought for the first time outside of her native New Zealand and was not welcomed in the Motor City, where Claressa is a fan favourite. Claressa, elected to the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame on Friday, has revived big-time boxing in Detroit. The city with a rich history in the sport that includes Joe Louis, Sugar Ray Robinson and Thomas Hearns went decades without relevant fights. The Red Wings and Pistons moved into Little Caesars Arena in 2017, but the arena didn't have a boxing card until 2023, when Claressa was the headliner and beat Maricela Cornejo. Claressa was back at Little Caesars Arena last summer, knocking out WBC heavyweight champion Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse in front of about 12,000 fans, and she drew a bigger crowd in her latest Earlier this month, Katie Taylor beat Amanda Serrano for the third time in front of a sold-out crowd of more than 19,000 at Madison Square Garden in New York in the arena's first all-women's card. Claressa won gold medals at 165 pounds at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, making her the first boxer from the United States to win consecutive Olympic medals. Professionally, she has earned titles in five divisions from 154 to 200 pounds.
