Palm opens lower on weak soyoil, strong ringgit

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian palm oil futures opened lower on Monday, reversing the previous session's gains, as weaker soyoil prices and a stronger ringgit weighed on the market.
The benchmark palm oil contract for October delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange slid RM34, or 0.79 per cent, to RM4,281 (US$1,010.62) a metric ton in early trade.
Dalian's most-active soyoil contract fell 0.34 per cent, while its palm oil contract added 0.29 per cent. Soyoil prices on the Chicago Board of Trade were down 0.47 per cent.
Palm oil tracks price movements of rival edible oils, as it competes for a share of the global vegetable oils market.
The ringgit, palm's currency of trade, strengthened 0.19 per cent against the dollar, making the commodity more expensive for buyers holding foreign currencies.
Oil prices barely budged as traders eyed the impact of new European sanctions on Russian oil supply, rising output from Middle East producers and concerns about fuel outlook as tariffs weighed on global economic growth.
Weaker crude oil futures make palm a less attractive option for biodiesel feedstock.
Cargo surveyor Intertek Testing Services estimated that exports of Malaysian palm oil products for July 1-20 fell 3.5 per cent compared with the same period a month earlier. AmSpec Agri Malaysia's export estimates are expected later in the day.
Palm oil may retrace into a range of RM4,254 to RM4,273 per ton, following its failure to break resistance at RM4,354, Reuters technical analyst Wang Tao said.

CTOS posts 2Q net profit of RM21.16mil

PETALING JAYA: CTOS Digital Bhd remains cautiously optimistic about its growth prospects for 2025, underpinned by product innovation, targeted marketing and ongoing efforts to improve operational efficiency across its business segments. The group said its key accounts division is expected to benefit from higher adoption of digital and analytical solutions, while its commercial segment will continue to focus on customer acquisition and retention. Meanwhile, the direct-to-consumer segment aims to deepen engagement with Malaysia's 16 million credit-active consumers through partnerships, financial literacy initiatives and targeted campaigns. 'The international business segment is also expected to continue contributing positively to the group's financial performance,' CTOS said, adding that it remains committed to delivering sustainable growth in the periods ahead. For the second quarter ended June 30, 2025 (2Q25), CTOS reported a net profit of RM21.16mil, down from RM25.5mil a year earlier. This translated to a lower basic earnings per share (EPS) of 0.9 sen compared with 1.1 sen in the same quarter last year. Quarterly revenue rose to RM79mil from RM76.6mil in 2Q24, supported by stronger contributions from the group's Malaysian business. The growth was largely driven by increased demand for digital reports and digital solutions across both local and international markets. For the first half of the financial year ending Dec 31, 2025 (1HFY25), the group posted a net profit of RM35.6mil or EPS of 1.5 sen, compared with earnings of RM46.32mil or 2 sen EPS it recorded for 1HFY24. Revenue for the six-month period climbed 4.6% on-year to RM155.07mil. CTOS said segment profit from its Malaysian operations fell to RM36.8mil, primarily due to increased operational expenses. Its international operations, comprising alternative data credit scoring businesses in Indonesia and the Philippines, recorded improved performance, with revenue and profit rising to RM20.2mil and RM1.5mil respectively in 1HFY25, supported by continued growth in client consumption. CTOS declared a second interim dividend of 0.65 sen per share for the financial year ending Dec 31, 2025, payable on Oct 24.

Ukraine secures three Patriot systems, seeks funding for seven more

KYIV: Ukraine has received confirmation from partners that they will provide three Patriot missile defence systems and discussions are underway to obtain seven more, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Thursday. 'I have officially received confirmation from Germany for two systems, and from Norway for one. We are currently working with Dutch partners,' he told reporters. President Donald Trump announced earlier this month that billions of dollars of U.S. weapons would go to Ukraine, including Patriot missiles. This set off negotiations around which partners could contribute to the weapons purchasing scheme -- a process that will determine the support Ukraine receives. The Patriot systems have proven effective at destroying Russian ballistic missiles aimed at Ukraine's cities. In addition to securing air defence supplies, Ukraine needs to cover a financing gap of $40 billion next year, Zelenskiy said in remarks released by his office. An additional $25 billion will be needed for missiles, drones and electronic warfare systems production, he added. - Reuters
