UAE citizens can now renew passports up to one year before expiry, ICP announces
Starting August 18, 2025, UAE citizens will be allowed to renew their passports up to one year before the expiry date, a change from the earlier six-month window. The new rule, issued by the ICP, is part of a broader initiative to enhance travel flexibility, streamline official procedures, and strengthen the UAE passport's global standing.
New timeline for passport renewals
The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security (ICP) has revised the policy governing passport renewals for UAE citizens. As per the latest decision by Ali Mohammed Al Shamsi, Chairman of the ICP, Emiratis will now be permitted to renew their passports once the remaining validity is one year or less. This is a shift from the previous rule that allowed renewals only when six months or fewer were left before expiration.
The change will be effective Monday, August 18, 2025, and is applicable to all UAE nationals with eligible passports. The aim is to allow for better advance planning, especially for international travel, while reducing disruptions in official transactions and providing extended use of digital documentation.
ICP noted that the new timeline will also support seamless transitions for UAE citizens who travel frequently or are involved in long-term visa procedures abroad.

Digital-first, accessible renewal process
The ICP has confirmed that the renewal process will remain efficient and widely accessible, continuing to focus on digital services to facilitate ease of access. Citizens can complete the entire renewal process online through the ICP smart services platform, accessible via both the official website and mobile application.
The online process allows applicants to:
Fill out the application form
Upload necessary documentation
Make payments digitally
For those who prefer or require in-person assistance, customer happiness centers within the UAE will remain available.
Additionally, UAE nationals living abroad can submit their applications through UAE embassies and consulates, and they also have the option to initiate the process online and collect the renewed passport from a diplomatic mission.
UAE passport strength and global ranking
This update comes at a time when the UAE passport continues to see a significant rise in its global ranking and travel privileges. As of 2025, the UAE passport:
Is ranked 8th globally according to the Henley Passport Index
Grants holders visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 185 countries
This is a marked improvement over previous years:
2022 & 2023: Ranked 15th
2024: Advanced to 11th
2025: Entered the Top 10, securing 8th place
Since the Henley Passport Index's inception in 2006, the UAE passport has added 152 countries to its visa-free or visa-on-arrival list, reflecting the UAE's growing diplomatic ties and international mobility for its citizens.
Chairman Al Shamsi highlighted that the UAE passport continues to rank as the world's most powerful, trusted, and widely recognised travel document. The new decision, he added, is a strong boost to its global standing and further establishes the UAE's passport issuance and renewal system as a leading model for the region and beyond.
In terms of operations, the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai has processed 7,425 passport renewals during the first half of 2025 alone. Since the opening of its center in 2008, over 139,000 passports have been issued to Emiratis through that facility.

So much so that the UX designer got curious, bought 30g of ceremonial-grade matcha online, a premium quality powder traditionally used in the Japanese tea ceremony, for Rs 800. 'I made matcha drinks with caramel, strawberry and vanilla,' says Latsyamitra. 'I'm planning to bake next,' she says. Saravanan B V, a brand designer from Ooty, initially tried it for its high antioxidant properties and health benefits. But soon he fell in love with the taste and now collects matcha varieties. Not all matcha tastes the same, says Saravanan. Indian matcha has an astringent taste (a dry, puckering sensation in the mouth) that comes from the altitude difference and the way it is ground, compared to Japanese matcha. The Japanese matcha, says Alexander R K, chef at Dou, Nungambakkam, has a unique flavour profile; a delicate balance of earthiness, umami and subtle bitterness making it a versatile ingredient that blends well with sweet and savoury dishes. 'We are trying to use matcha as salt in barbecue meats and tempura,' says Alexander. 'They are still in a trial phase, but show promise among adventurous diners. We're also exploring matcha-infused sauces and glazes that can complement Asian-inspired small plates and grills,' he adds. Matcha Brownie Café owners and tea merchants say they procure their matcha from Japan or Assam (the only place in India where it is grown). Chota Tingrai in Assam's Tinsukia district is the only tea estate in the country that produces it. 'We've been making green tea at Chota Tingrai using Japanese technology since the 1980s, but matcha requires far greater precision and investment,' says tea manufacturer Mrigendra Jalan of Jalan Industries. The estate is experimenting with the Yabukita cultivar and its Assam equivalent, slowly moving toward Japanese standards with both ceremonial and culinary grades. 'The process is slow and costly, as one Japanese grinding machine costs Rs 40 lakh and produces just 10kg a day,' he says. South India has the potential to grow matcha, says Jalan, but the climate and altitude will influence its flavour profile. 'South Indian tea is not as strong as Assam tea, and less bitter. While Assam works on refining production, demand from Chennai, Bengaluru, and Ooty is already surging, pointing to a future where locally grown matcha could complement imports from Japan.' ‘Green nod must for Manimajra housing'
Chandigarh: The environment department of Chandigarh administration has told the municipal corporation that the "user agency" is required to obtain a green clearance from the competent authority for the MC's Rs 700 crore housing project in Manimajra. The department has clarified that the said project falls under category 8(a) of the schedule to Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) notification, 2006, which makes it necessary for it to have a prior environmental clearance. The letter from the environment department to MC clearly states, "The township and area development projects covering an area of less than 50 hectares and/or built-up of more than 1,50,000 sqm fall under category 8(b) of the schedule to EIA notification, 2006, dated Sept 14, 2006, and rules made thereunder, require prior environmental clearance. For all such projects falling under category 8(a) & 8(b) of the schedule to EIA notification, 2006, dated Sept 14, 2006, and rules made thereunder, the user agency is required to obtain prior environmental clearance from the competent authority. Pkl beggars to get a home, SMILE soon
Panchkula: Beggars in Panchkula will soon get a roof above their heads. The municipal corporation is set to rehabilitate them and is going to hire an agency/NGO to conduct a survey. The agency/NGO will identify the spots where beggars sit and the total number of beggars. It will also make suggestions about rehabilitation and other aspects related to it, and will be involved in the execution of the project from start to finish. MC's joint commissioner Gaurav Chauhan said, "We are planning to implement the ministry of social justice and empowerment's project named SMILE (Support for Marginalized Individuals for Livelihood and Enterprise) in Panchkula. For this, we are studying the projects of the states where it has already been implemented. Following this, an agency will be engaged for the survey and comprehensive preparation." He clarified that this project is meant only for beggars and not vagabonds scattered across the city.
