What Lionel Messi said to James Rodriguez in angry on-pitch confrontation

Lionel Messi angrily clashed with James Rodriguez during Argentina's World Cup qualifier against Colombia on Tuesday night. Messi captained La Albiceleste at the Estadio Mâs Monumental.
Lionel Scaloni's side have already booked their place in next summer's tournament and sit top of the South America qualifying group by 10 points. They hosted sixth-place Colombia, in a rematch of last year's Copa America final.

Argentina won that game, held at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, thanks to Lautaro Martinez's extra-time goal. Rodriguez was captain of Colombia that night, while Argentina skipper Messi was forced off through injury with 24 minutes of normal time to play.

Back in March, Rodriguez claimed that Colombia did not win due to 'external factors'. The former Real Madrid star hit out at the refereeing team for their performance during the final.
'Yes, we had an excellent Copa," he said. "Personally, it was spectacular. We wanted the title and came close, but due to external factors, we couldn't be champions of the Americas. The referee didn't award two penalties, and for me, one of them was clear.
"VAR audio recordings were shown in every match, but not in the final; something strange happened there. We were on the side of the draw that included Brazil, Uruguay, and the strong opponents, and they were on the side where their opponents were weaker.
"They've won everything. I'm not saying they're a team that doesn't deserve to win because if they were champions, it's because they deserved it, but it's true that these external factors influenced us and held us back.'
Four months later and it appears those comments did not go down well with Messi and the Argentina squad. During Tuesday's game, Rodriguez became involved in a confrontation with a number of Argentina players, with Messi heading over to push him away.

As he did so, the duo could be seen talking to each in an animated fashion. They continued their discussion with their hands covering their mouths, with Rodriguez caught by surprise by a comment from Messi.
According to TyC Sports, Messi approached Rodriguez to say: "You said they helped us in the final. You talk a lot." Rodriguez responded by insisting: "I didn't say anything."
After the game, Rodriguez refused to discuss the interaction, saying: "What stays on the field, stays on the field." Messi was substituted with 12 minutes to go as his side fought back from a goal down to secure a draw, with boss Scaloni admitting he had not been planning to take off the superstar.

"In principle, he wasn't going to come off, but when he saw that we were making two substitutions, he told me that it was better for him to come off, and I took him off, otherwise he wouldn't have come off," Scaloni said.
"You know how it works and what I think. I think the best thing about the team is their constant desire to try, which is always valuable."

Serie A referees to announce VAR decisions live in stadiums

Aug 5 (Reuters) - Serie A referees will begin announcing VAR decisions live in stadiums and on television starting next season, referee designator Gianluca Rocchi told Italian media on Tuesday. Rocchi described the move as a significant step forward in communication between referees and the public, saying the aim was to make officiating decisions quicker and clearer. "We have a select group of officials and we want to ensure the language is as uniform as possible so that decisions can be clear to the public," Rocchi said. The concept of referees explaining decisions to the crowd has also been explored in countries including England and Germany. The Serie A season kicks off on August 23.

Allianz UK Official Supporter of Women's Rugby World Cup 2025

The sponsorship highlights Allianz's continued commitment to supporting the women's game and is also marks a special sporting moment as the first international stadium naming rights agreement in the history of the Rugby World Cup. The World Cup, which begins on 22 August, will move across seven host cities in England before the champions of the 16-team tournament are crowned at Allianz Stadium. The winners will lift the newly unveiled Women's Rugby World Cup trophy, marking a new chapter in the tournament's history. With unprecedented interest in Women's Rugby World Cup 2025, the final at Allianz Stadium is on course to become the most attended women's rugby match in history, set to surpass the record-breaking crowd of 66,000 at Stade de France during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Allianz has a longstanding connection with rugby, spanning from elite to grassroots levels. In 2024, the iconic home of England Rugby was renamed Allianz Stadium, following the evolution of a wide-ranging partnership with England Rugby. This partnership includes support for the men's and women's national teams and investment in youth pathways. Allianz also supports grassroots rugby clubs across the UK via the Allianz Future Fund. Aligning with Allianz's strong focus and commitment to invest in fans and grassroots communities, as part of the tournament's wider purpose-led activation strategy, 'The Road to Allianz Stadium', is a partnership with global fan engagement platform Stepathlon. Designed to unite and inspire fans to get active in the build-up to the tournament, participants will be challenged to walk the equivalent distance from Sunderland's Stadium of Light – host of the opening match – to Allianz Stadium, the home of the final. Colm Holmes, CEO, Allianz UK commented: 'I'm thrilled that Allianz UK has been named as an official supporter of the Women's Rugby World Cup, and that the final will be played at Allianz Stadium. This is hugely exciting and also feels like a natural extension of our existing partnerships. We know and understand the power of sport to inspire and unite, so to be part of this journey for the Women's Rugby World Cup is very special. Ticket sales have already exceeded that of the Rugby World Cup in 2021, and I know it is going to be a terrific tournament for existing and new fans alike.' Sarah Massey, Managing Director of Women's Rugby World Cup 2025, commented: 'Allianz's commitment to rugby and to using sport as a force for positive societal change makes them an ideal partner for Women's Rugby World Cup 2025. We're delighted to welcome them on this journey as we work towards delivering the biggest and most impactful women's rugby event in history, set to conclude in spectacular fashion with a record-breaking final at Allianz Stadium on 27 September.'
