
Stunning new Lotus hyper-hybrids to rescue brand from its EV woes
Then there's the power of politics to make life hard for the car industry. Tariffs are impacting Lotus exports from China, while President Trump rolls back American EV incentives and Prime Minister Keir Starmer moves in the opposite direction by reconsidering a 2030 ban on UK sales of new combustion cars.
Given the climate, you'd understand if Matt Windle, the managing director of Lotus sports cars, passed on adding Europe's commercial performance to his responsibilities. Instead, the laid-back Lotus leader is 'excited' about his broader remit.
Before Chinese auto group Geely – also owner of Volvo, Polestar, Smart (in a joint venture) and a number of domestic brands – commenced the brand's growth spurt, Windle told me Lotus was a 'sleeping giant'. What is it now?
'It's waking up, it's coming out of hibernation,' he grins. 'We are starting to [realise] the opportunity we have. We've got the best products in our history, for technology, for quality. And the global volume is higher than ever.'
Lotus delivered 12,134 cars last year, with the lifestyle EVs accounting for 57 per cent. But the ambition is far higher, especially with Lotus' Wuhan factory having a 150,000-unit capacity. 'Is it quick enough? No, but I've learned to be patient. The time for impatience is when people don't do what they say they'll do.' With commendable understatement, he continues: 'There are a few external aspects that have had an impact: [sluggish] economies, wars and tariffs – and a lot of them you couldn't have predicted.'
He points out that deliveries in 2024 climbed 74 per cent on 2023's, and are in another league compared to the 1,710 cars that Hethel (the Norfolk sports car factory) assembled in 2021, the last year of the Elise, Exige and Evora.
Hethel also produces the Evija, the extraordinary hypercar that kicked off the Vision80 plan to transform Lotus from threatened minnow to luxury electric player by 2028. Getting the four-motor, 1,973bhp monster into production has caused a huge headache, with engineering sign-off running years late and the Evija proving a tricky sell – just like its fellow electric hypercars from Rimac and Pininfarina. The ambition was 130 units at £2.4million each: how many orders does Lotus have?
'I'm not going into the numbers,' says Windle, politely but firmly. 'Do I want more? Yes. And the car is going to be out there this year, in front of potential customers, and people now taking delivery of their cars will be advocates for an incredible product. As with every Lotus, you need to get people to drive it and then they understand it.'
What has Lotus learned from the Evija project? 'I could write a book on it!' jokes the sports car boss. 'Hypercars are very difficult: you're producing a car to operate at extreme performance levels while making sure it's safe.' Writing the software to manage the delivery of the enormous 1,704Nm of torque to all four wheels was the biggest challenge. Being an electric sports car pioneer has clearly given Lotus pause for thought. The Vision80 blueprint announced the Type 135 (all Lotus projects get a sequential 'type' number), a pure electric coupe destined to replace the Emira. Full of confidence, Lotus even showed a prototype chassis stacking the batteries in the classic mid-engined position, four years ago. What's the latest? 'We need to understand where the market is going,' replies Windle. 'We've got a range out there we're incredibly proud of right now…which will help with the product strategy. [Future planning] is an incredibly difficult job at the moment. As you'd expect, we're working in the background with R&D and looking at the possibilities.'
Will it help that Porsche and Alpine should both introduce electric sports cars in the next year or so? 'Yes, it does. Relative to those guys we are small, and you need to be absolutely certain there's going to be the market share for it. I think there is – and that we've got to go that way as far as legislation is concerned.'
Windle is also reticent about the Type 134, a smaller electric SUV beneath the Eletre, though he concedes it's still an aspiration. The priority is 'organic market growth' with the existing products, though Lotus has confirmed it must broaden its powertrain line-up with petrol/electric 'hyper hybrids' to attract more customers.
The Eletre is likely to get the powertrain first in 2026, and its 'hyper' label shows engineers will not compromise on the electric SUV's mighty performance. Parent Geely is rolling out a new plug-in hybrid system that mixes a 275bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a 389bhp front electric motor and 496bhp rear unit: that would be sufficient firepower to eclipse the base Eletre S's 4.5-second launch from standstill to 62mph. And with the group trying to use more technology across more brands, the engineering team is likely to finesse that system for Lotus.
'The products will be based on the performance where we are now, but then you get that addition of range,' says Windle. The Eletre has the space for a big battery, its 800-volt electric architecture may be upgraded to 900 volts for rapid recharging, and a 500-mile combined range should be possible: the battery alone is reportedly good for more than 200 miles. Rolling out hybrids should accelerate Lotus's growth – is 30,000 annual sales realistic? 'It's feasible,' he muses. 'Whether it's achievable is a different matter. It's important that we don't chase [a] number. We need to build the business from the bottom up.' The company – whose operations lost $786m last year – hopes to break even in 2026.
The UK and Europe account for 40 per cent of Lotus's volume, with Lotus striving to keep a lid on price rises despite the 29.9 per cent import duty on EVs going to the mainland. Windle's growth plan is to look for territorial gaps which could entice new retailers, venture into EV-hungry markets such as the Nordics, and tap the love for Lotus in car-mad countries such as Germany. Likewise the brand can now enter the corporate market, where tax incentives fuel EV sales.
But the scale of the task is huge: Lotus only has 16 retailers in the UK, and they've needed to develop a new capability of servicing EVs. Our discussion is in HR Owen's flagship Lotus store opposite London's Ritz hotel, and it's heartening to see faces young and old pressed up to the glass, gazing at the green Evija and Type 72 Formula 1 racer from 1975.
Windle, ever the car guy, persuaded Classic Team Lotus boss Clive Chapman to let him drive it. 'It was one of my best ever days,' he beams. 'Clive stood [beside the Hethel test track] and watched me do a lap, get a feel, go a bit quicker. I just felt so engaged with that car. It was the most thrilling but the most never-racking thing ever.'
A ground-breaking F1 car couldn't be much more distant from the big electric cars flanking it. But if Lotus can inject the passion it triggers into the new portfolio, the brand has a chance.
'Think of the [ageing, niche] cars we had just seven years ago to where we are now as a portfolio,' urges Matt Windle. 'We're on a journey – and we've already come a long way.'

JD Vance said he jokingly warned Volodymyr Zelensky to 'behave' before his pivotal summit with Donald Trump this week as the vice president revealed the future for MAGA and the Republican party. Vance addressed the summit with the Ukrainian leader during an interview with Fox News on Wednesday while also talking about a recent Wall Street Journal report that Tesla billionaire Elon Musk is preparing to back him for president in 2028. 'Zelensky walked into the Oval Office. I was chatting with him and I said: "Mr. President, so long as you behave, I won't say anything,"' Vance joked. 'It was a good little icebreaker.' Vance joined the summit with Zelensky and a group of European leaders on Monday as they discussed a path forward to end the years long conflict in Ukraine with Russia. The VP tried to lighten the mood after a previous White House meeting spiraled into chaos after Vance chided the Ukrainian president not saying 'thank you.' Vance has been tasked with coordinating a meeting between Zelensky and Vladimir Putin. Ingraham asked him his opinion on dealing with the Russian leader. He said that the stereotype of the Russian president many have as a cold, ruthless man are misguided. 'He's more soft spoken than you'd necessarily expect. The American media has a particular image of him,' Vance said. 'He's soft spoken in a certain way. He's very deliberate, he's very careful. Fundamentally, he's a person who looks out for the interests as he sees it of Russia.' Vance also responded to 2028 speculation as he prepares to stump for the crucial midterms and implored Musk to abandon his quest for a third party. 'If he doesn't like things the Republican Party's doing, my advice to Elon would be try to fix the Republican Party,' Vance declared. 'Try to push it in your own way. Disagree with me all you want, disagree with the president of the United States but don't pretend that you can make a big difference with a third party.' Vance also claimed that Musk should get on board with Donald Trump's GOP agenda because third parties are difficult to start and liberals don't like him anyway. 'My argument to him is whether you like it or not, you are perceived by the far left as part of the American right,' Vance said. 'The idea that Elon is ever going to go back to being in the middle where Democrats and Republicans both like him, that's just not going to happen, he is perceived as being on the American right.' Vance also previewed his Thursday to trip to Georgia, where he'll tout the One Big Beautiful Bill and take on Georgia Senator Jon Ossoff, who is up for re-election and voted against Trump's signature legislation. 'We will have fun and talk about the successes of the big beautiful bill,' he said, joking that what would happen would depend on who shows up. Ossoff's race could be the difference between Republicans increasing their 6-seat majority in the Senate or even keeping it depending on which party takes momentum into the midterms. The Republican nominee has not yet been decided. The speech is the first of a series of talks Vance will give selling the One, Big Beautiful Bill to voters and potentially begins the rumored push to make him the GOP standard bearer once Trump is term-limited in 2028, CNN reported. Perhaps leaning into that role, Vance sounded off on California Governor Gavin Newsom's new act of pretending to tweet like President Trump on social media. 'This idea that Gavin Newsom is somehow gonna mimic Donald Trump's style - I think that ignores the fundamental genius of President Trump's political success, which is that he's authentic,' he said. 'You've gotta be yourself, you've actually gotta' talk to people honestly about the issues. Don't be a crazy person, be authentic,' he added, noting that he doesn't believe Newsom to have moved away from any of the Democrats 'crazy' positions on immigration and transgender people in sports. Speculation started heating up in June, Vance made a secret trip to Rupert Murdoch 's Montana ranch, but it wasn't to ride horses or about tasting wine. The vice president spoke with the 94-year-old media mogul, his son Lachlan Murdoch and a group of other Fox News executives at the $280 million estate on June 11, to the talk up Trump agenda. The specifics of the meeting and Vance's conversation with the group was not disclosed - but it appeared to be brief. Murdoch and other top executives are known for hosting powerful politicians across the summer at their sprawling estates. After the Murdoch meeting, the vice president and his wife, Usha, then took a hike, Montana State Auditor James Brown, who helped plan the trip, told Montana Talks. Now, Musk has reportedly decided to join other tech titans and rally behind the person they believe is the likely successor to Trump: Vice President JD Vance, who has made recent moves that suggest he will run in 2028. The former DOGE head spent nearly $300million helping to elect Trump in 2024, but the duo has a spectacular fallout earlier this year with Musk eventually writing on X that 'Trump is in the Epstein files.' With Trump term-limited as president, Musk is considering using his financial largesse to help Vance win the next presidential election. He would join other tech honchos who have doled out money to Vance such as Palantir CEO Peter Thiel, former PayPal COO David Sacks, Roku CEO Anthony Wood and entrepreneur Palmer Luckey. Recent polls show Vance as a clear front runner for the 2028 Republican nomination. Musk has been speaking to Vance in recent weeks, the Journal said, and believes launching the so-called 'America Party' for the 2026 midterms might jeopardize their relationship. The vice president has been in the news all week after his role in the Trump-Zelensky showdown. Vance's advice to Zelensky to 'behave,' combined with his demand that Zelensky ' say thank you' to the president, may have had an effect on his blockbuster Monday love-fest with Trump. In fact, The Washington Post noted that Zelensky thanked Trump approximately 11 times in a nearly five-minute public address Monday. He thanked Trump another seven times in 50 seconds as they addressed the press in the Oval Office, the site of their infamous showdown in March. 'Thanks so much, Mr President. If I can, first of all, thank you for the invitation, and thank you very much for your efforts, personal efforts, to stop killings and stop this war. Thank you,' Zelensky said. Beyond pleasantries, Zelensky had come prepared to speak in the language that Trump made famous: the art of the deal. He announced that Ukraine plans to buy $100billion in American weapons in exchange for the 'major step forward' toward peace Zelensky believes Trump has offered. The European allies will be helping Ukraine finance the deal, as well as a $50billion deal between Washington and Kyiv to help Ukrainian companies produce drones, The Financial Times reported. Trump told Zelensky on Monday that the United States would help guarantee Ukraine's security in any deal to end Russia's war there, though the extent of any assistance was not immediately clear. 'When it comes to security, there's going to be a lot of help,' Trump told reporters, adding that European countries would be involved. 'They are a first line of defense because they're there, but we'll help them out.' Trump refused three times to rule out putting American boots on the ground though any assistance is more likely to come in the form of air support. Zelensky hailed the promise as 'a major step forward,' adding that the guarantees would be 'formalized on paper within the next week to 10 days.' However, Zelensky clearly saw charming the president as key to getting any deals done. The president said on social media Monday that he and Putin discussed plans for a summit between the leaders of Russia and Ukraine, at a location to be determined. Following that diplomatic showdown, Trump said he will then sit down with both leaders in an attempt to make peace in the war torn country. 'This was a very good, early step for a War that has been going on for almost four years,' he said. Zelensky responded by saying 'we are ready' for any leader-level meetings while speaking to reporters after the White House. He said it's the only way to solve these 'complicated and painful issues.' The Ukrainian leader was reluctant to set conditions for the meeting, regarding a potential ceasefire or other matters, to prevent Russia from making their own demands, potentially jeopardizing those talks. 'That's why I believe that we must meet without any conditions,' he told reporters. The president specifically thanked Vance, who will be coordinating between Russia and Ukraine alongside Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.

Buchenwald can refuse entry to people wearing Palestinian keffiyeh, German court rules
A German court has ruled that a Nazi concentration camp memorial has the right to refuse entry to those wearing the Palestinian keffiyeh scarf. The higher administrative court in the eastern state of Thuringia on Wednesday rejected a request from a woman to be allowed entry to the Buchenwald concentration camp memorial while wearing a keffiyeh. According to local media reports, the woman was turned away when she attempted to attend a commemorative event marking the 80th anniversary of the camp's liberation in April while wearing the scarf. She then petitioned the courts to allow her to return to the memorial for another commemorative event this week while wearing a keffiyeh. The court found that the memorial was within its rights to deny her entry, pointing to the woman's declared aim of 'sending a political message against what she saw as the [memorial's] one-sided support for the policies of the Israeli government'. 'It is unquestionable that this would endanger the sense of security of many Jews, especially at this site,' the court said. The court said the woman's right to freedom of expression was outweighed in this case by the memorial's 'interest in upholding the purpose of the institution'. Germany, still trying to atone for the murder of 6 million Jews in the Holocaust, has been one of Israel's staunchest allies. About 56,000 people lost their lives at Buchenwald – some executed, others starved or worked to death – and a further 20,000 died in Mittelbau-Dora, where inmates worked on the Nazis' V1 and V2 rockets.

Thousands await GCSE results across Northern Ireland
Thousands of young people across Northern Ireland are set to receive their GCSE results today. Scores of students will also receive vocational qualification results. Last year around a third of the 32,018 students in the region who received GCSEs results achieved a grade A or better. Last Thursday, more than 25,000 students across the region received their AS and A-level examination results, with 30.4% of entries having achieved the top A* to A grades. Northern Ireland continued to outperform other parts of the UK in the A-level results last week with nearly 86% of pupils in the region receiving an A* to C grade, while the figures for England and Wales were just under 78%. Stormont Economy Minister Caoimhe Archibald has urged students receiving results today and their parents/carers to make use of the advice and guidance offered by her department's Careers Service. 'Making informed decisions following your exam results is crucial in helping you consider the next step on your journey,' she said. 'No matter what your results were, there are many opportunities available to you and I would urge you to examine these fully. 'You may wish to remain at school, or you might want to explore further education courses, start an apprenticeship or training programme or go into employment – my department's Careers Service can provide you with all the help and guidance you need. 'Whatever choice you make, I want to pass on my very best wishes for the future.' Young people and parents can find useful information on the Careers Service website at
