Odisha: Police arrest accused after self-immolation attempt Balasore college
Meanwhile, the Odisha government have formed a committee to conduct a thorough inquiry into the alleged harassment case against Samira Kumar Sahu, Assistant Professor at FM Auto College, who has been arrested following the suicide attempt by a female student of the college on July 12.
According to Balasore SP Raj Prasad, the police have established prima facie evidence against the teacher who was involved in the self-immolation case of the female student.
The accused has been arrested and produced before the court. The victim had lodged a complaint with the Internal Compliance Committee on June 30.
'In the case of a female student who attempted self-immolation, prima facie evidence has been established against a teacher. He has been arrested and forwarded to the court. This student had lodged a complaint with the Internal Compliance Committee on 30th June. We are enquiring about the findings of their report. Whoever is found guilty, accountability will be fixed for them,' he said.
The Higher Education Department of the Odisha government on Saturday suspended Assistant Professor and Principal of FM (Auto) College, following the self-immolation attempt of the college student.
In a letter issued by the Higher Education Department of the Odisha Government that Dilip Kumar Ghose failed to perform his duties as the Principal of the college due to which he was suspended under sub-rule (2) of rule 12 of the Odisha Civil Services (Classification, Control & Appeal) Rules, 1962, with immediate effect.
'The government has contemplated that the matter has not been handled properly by Dillip Kumar Ghose. He has failed to perform his duties in the capacity of Principal of the college. He is hereby placed under suspension under sub-rule (2) of rule 12 of the Odisha Civil Services (Classification, Control & Appeal) Rules, 1962, with immediate effect', the letter said.
Addressing the matter, MP Pratap Chandra Sarangi on Saturday said that the matter was going on from the past few days.
'This matter has been going on for many days. Initially, the Police had been assured by the college that they would complete the enquiry committee's report in five days', Sarangi told ANI. (ANI)

"We Will Get It Seized": Maharashtra Transport Minister's Warning On Illegal Bike-Taxis
Mumbai: Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik spoke to ANI about illegal bike-taxis in Mumbai and stated that the administration seized 72 cars during raids at 138 locations yesterday, with action being taken in coordination with the RTOs and police. He said to ANI, "The state government has confiscated 72 vehicles yesterday, and they have raided 138 places. Many of our officers were involved; we had organised that programme for a day. If any action is taken on this, it will be done through our RTO." He added, "We will also work with the police so that if responsible people catch anyone in the wrong way, then the state government's vehicle should be brought on the road only after taking permission from the state government. If a vehicle comes on any road illegally, we will get it seized with full force." This comes after the Mumbai Regional Transport Office (RTO) launched a joint crackdown involving 20 units across various parts of Mumbai, resulting in the seizure of approximately 78 bike taxis. The transport office has also taken action against 123 vehicles in Mumbai, Thane, Vasai, Vashi, and Panvel. The Mahrashtra RTO said in an official statement, "Against this backdrop, special teams of the Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Mumbai launched a joint crackdown through 20 units across Mumbai, Thane, Vasai, Vashi, and Panvel. During the operation, action was taken against a total of 123 vehicles engaged in illegal transport activities, out of which 78 bike taxis were seized." "Additionally, criminal cases have been registered against the concerned drivers under the Motor Vehicles Act, and further legal proceedings are underway against the operators of these unauthorised apps as well," it added. The Transport Department has earlier received several complaints from some passengers travelling using unauthorised bike taxi services. In response, an immediate investigation was initiated. The inquiry revealed that certain unregistered apps and illegal bike taxi operators have been operating without obtaining permission from the government to carry out passenger transport. This not only results in revenue loss for the state but also poses a serious threat to passenger safety. Notably, as per Section 93 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, it is mandatory to obtain a valid permit to operate any passenger transport service. However, it has been found that some app-based companies and drivers are blatantly violating these rules and engaging in illegal transportation activities.

Several opposition parties have jointly called for a 12-hour Odisha bandh on Thursday, July 17, to protest against the death of a college student, who set herself on fire, alleging inaction by authorities over a harassment complaint against a professor. The bandh was called by eight Opposition parties in Odisha, demanding justice for the student of Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College. The bandh call is set to remain in place until 6 pm Today. According to news agency ANI, transport services were hit and shops remained shut in Bhubaneswar on Thursday. A man who was waiting to board a bus in Bhubaneswar stated that people are facing transportation issues due to the state bandh, but added that the protest is necessary when the administration fails to act. Security forces were deployed, and petrol pumps remained closed in Odisha's capital city as several opposition parties observed the state bandh. The bandh also caused long traffic jams on the Chennai-Kolkata Highway, where trucks and other vehicles were left stranded. Bus services were impacted in different parts of the state. Eight Opposition political parties, including the Congress, on Tuesday unitedly called for 'Odisha Bandh' on Thursday, July 17. They are demanding the resignation of the State Higher Education Minister and a judicial investigation in the demise of the student. The 20-year-old student had allegedly faced prolonged sexual harassment by the Head of Department (HoD) at Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College in Balasore. Despite filing a formal complaint and seeking help from the college principal, her grievances reportedly went unheard, leading her to take the extreme step on campus last Saturday. She was initially admitted to the Balasore district hospital and later referred to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bhubaneswar, where she succumbed to her burn injuries on July 14. Crime Branch takes over FM College student death case
Bhubaneswar: The Crime Branch of Odisha Police on Wednesday took over the probe into the death of a woman student of Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College, Balasore, who allegedly set herself on fire on the campus. Director General of Police, CID-CB, Vinaytosh Mishra, in an order, deputed DSP Iman Kalyan Nayak of Crime Against Women and Children Wing (CAW&CW), Bhubaneswar, to take up the investigation of the case and such other cases registered in that connection. 'DSP, Iman Kalyan Nayak of CAW &CW, Bhubaneswar will have the powers to function as Officer-in-Charge of Balasore district Sahadevkhunta Police Station for the purpose of investigation of this case,' the office order said, adding that Inspector, Panchali Rout will assist Nayak. Earlier, the Balasore Police had arrested two persons, the prime accused and FM College Education department HoD Samir Kumar Sahoo and Principal Dillip Ghose. They were booked under sections 108/3 (5) (abetment), 351 (2) (criminal intimidation), 75 (1) (iii), which deals with sexual harassment and sections 78 and 79 that deal with stalking and insulting the modesty of a woman. Section 108/3(5) of BNS deals with abetment of suicide under which a person can get a maximum of 10 years imprisonment. After a meeting of ministers on Tuesday, Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari had indicated that the State government would expand the ambit of investigation and all persons who are directly or indirectly linked to the harassment of the college student would come under the purview of investigation. 'Though two persons have so far been arrested in the case, there are about 20 people found directly or indirectly harassing the woman student. All will come under the purview of the probe,' Pujari said. Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan said the government would ensure a free and fair investigation into the woman student's death case, and certain attempts to divert the probe would not be accepted. Harichandan came down heavily on the Opposition BJD and Congress, accusing them of using the sensitive case for their political gains. 'We have promptly taken action, and two persons have been arrested immediately. Chief Minister himself visited the victim at the hospital and announced stringent action against the culprits,'he said.
