Major industry's shift: Infrastructure is critical for the AI era as KSA advances Vision 2030

Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia – Ahead of its flagship event in Riyadh 'Cisco Connect – CXO Edition', Cisco has revealed key local findings from its global networking study, highlighting how AI and modernized networks are driving fundamental changes in enterprise infrastructure. As AI assistants, agents, and data-driven workloads reshape how work gets done, they're creating faster, more dynamic, more latency-sensitive, and more complex network traffic. The rise of connected devices, 24/7 uptime demands, and growing security threats are pushing infrastructure to adapt and evolve. IT leaders are rethinking networks—what they do, how they enable growth, and how they protect businesses. The network they build today will decide the business they become tomorrow. Salman Faqeeh, the Managing Director of Cisco in Saudi Arabia, commented: "Our research highlights a critical shift in network architecture that aligns with Saudi Arabia's focus on innovation. The AI era relies on ultra-fast, low-latency, and highly secure networks, and KSA is leading the way by building the AI infrastructure of the future. At Cisco, we are proud to partner with Saudi Arabia to develop networks that will drive the Kingdom's ambitious Vision 2030 goals." Key Insights: The Future of Networking in Saudi Arabia The network has become a strategic priority: all participants say a modernized network is critical to rolling out AI, IoT, and cloud. 94% of IT leaders plan to increase the share of their overall IT budget allocated to networking. Secure networking is mission critical: 98% say secure networking is important to their operations and growth; 65% say it's critical. 97% believe an improved network will enhance their cybersecurity posture. AI intensifies demand for resilient networks: 97% say a resilient network is critical, at a time when 73% faced major outages in the past two years – driven largely by congestion, cyberattacks, and misconfigurations. Leaders look to AI to grow revenue: 52% say a modernized network's greatest impact on revenue will come from deploying AI tools that automate and tailor customer journeys – enabling faster, more personalized experiences that can strengthen loyalty and drive growth. AI is reshaping computing infrastructure: 67% say their data centres can't yet meet today's AI demands, and 90% plan to expand capacity – on-prem, in the cloud, or both. UAE Emerges as Premier Hub for Digital Nomads

Arabian Post Staff -Dubai Abu Dhabi, Dubai – The United Arab Emirates has climbed to second place in the 2025 VisaGuide Digital Nomad Visa Index, surpassing established destinations such as the Bahamas, Hungary, and Montenegro, and trailing only Spain. This ascent reflects the UAE's strategic pivot from an oil-driven economy to a digital-first global destination, underpinned by technological infrastructure, favourable tax regimes, and quality of life enhancements. With a score of 4.48 out of 5, the UAE trails Spain's top score of 5.00 on the index. VisaGuide's assessment considered six key factors: cost of living, visa income thresholds, taxation policies, internet connectivity, healthcare provisions, and tourism appeal. Among these, the UAE excels particularly in internet speed—the highest among index participants—and its zero income tax environment. Industry experts highlight the UAE's Virtual Working Programme as central to its success. The visa requires applicants to demonstrate a monthly income of at least USD 5,000, but offers long-term stability with a one-year renewable visa and a pathway to tax residency after 183 days of occupancy. As a result, the nation is increasingly perceived as a strategic location for professionals seeking financial efficiency and high-speed connectivity. ADVERTISEMENT Beyond the index metrics, the UAE has invested heavily in public–private partnerships aimed at improving urban liveability. Smart city initiatives in Dubai and Abu Dhabi have brought upgrades to healthcare, public transport, cultural amenities, and green spaces—features that cater to both expatriates and nomads. Local business leaders report rising demand for flexible work hubs, with coworking operators expanding operations across the emirates to accommodate this new demographic. At the same time, the nation's positioning as a global events centre—hosting high-profile conventions, sporting events and art exhibitions—has enhanced its appeal. The UAE now markets itself as a lifestyle destination which balances professional infrastructure and cultural vibrancy. Global digital nomad trends further bolster the UAE's rise. Industry reports suggest there are now between 40 and 80 million digital nomads worldwide, with significant proportions working in full-time remote positions. The majority are aged between 25 and 44, well-educated, and drawn to locations offering work–life synergies, cost-efficiency and mobility—all areas where the UAE measures strongly. Nevertheless, some critique remains. The USD 5,000 income requirement places the UAE out of reach for lower-earning nomads, in contrast to more accessible programmes in Eastern Europe or Latin America. That said, proponents argue the premium threshold aligns with the UAE's higher cost of living and positions the country as a destination for highly skilled professionals capable of contributing to its Vision 2030 economic diversification goals. VisaGuide's shift in ranking—from fourth place in 2023 to second in 2025—signals a rapidly evolving policy landscape. Since launching the Virtual Working Programme in mid-2021, the government has continued refining visa issuance processes, digitising applications, and exploring expanded visa durations and multi-entry permits. Such developments are likely to reinforce the UAE's standing as a top-tier remote-work hub as demand continues to grow. Looking ahead, rising competition from Spain and Montenegro—which offer lower income thresholds and EU access—suggests the UAE must maintain its digital edge. Experts recommend continued investment in affordable living solutions, broadband enhancements, and nomad-focused community services. The introduction of satellite cities and regional hubs is also under consideration to spread digital infrastructure beyond the emirate centres. For aspiring nomads plotting their next move, the UAE's rapid climb sends a clear message: remote work is no longer tethered to temperate climates or journey-to-work simplicity. With its borderless toolkit—tax freedom, connectivity, modern urbanism—it has repositioned itself as a compelling alternative to traditional European destinations.

Saudi Crown Charts Tourism Surge Ahead of 2034 Boom

Global tourism is projected to reach 30 billion trips by 2034 and contribute $16 trillion to world GDP, growing 1.5 times faster than the global economy, according to the World Economic Forum's latest report. Amid this surge, Saudi Arabia is emerging as a pivotal force, ranking the second fastest-growing tourism destination and leading global investments in innovation, infrastructure, and sustainability The WEF report, Travel and Tourism at a Turning Point: Principles for Transformative Growth, produced with Kearney and the Saudi Ministry of Tourism, highlights the Kingdom's rapid evolution. Under Vision 2030, it aims to attract 150 million visitors by 2030, underpinned by major mega-projects like NEOM, Soudah Peaks in Asir, Trojena, Al‑Ula, and the Red Sea Project. These initiatives reflect bold efforts to diversify beyond oil and position Saudi Arabia as a global tourism and cultural hub. Minister of Tourism Ahmed Al Khateeb emphasises that tourism goes beyond economic benefit; it fosters cultural diplomacy and long‑term resilience. He asserts that developing 'regenerative destinations, future‑ready infrastructure, and talent pipelines' is central to both national growth and shaping future global tourism. Saudi Arabia's investments via the Quality of Life Program—backed by a US$34.6 billion budget—underscore its commitment to improving recreation and entertainment infrastructure while supporting emerging tourism projects. ADVERTISEMENT Saudi mega-developments like NEOM's Sindalah island and the mountain resorts of Soudah Peaks and Trojena illustrate the Kingdom's integrated approach. Sindalah, an ultra‑luxury island destination opened in October 2024, with 85‑berth marina and high‑end amenities, aims to host 2,400 visitors daily by 2028. Soudah Peaks, a US$7.7 billion project nestled in the Asir Mountains, targets two million annual visitors by 2033 and aims to contribute US$7.8 billion to GDP. Trojena, designed as a year‑round mountain resort with skiing and adventure tourism, continues despite budget pressures, though a 2023 audit flagged soaring costs and alleged financial irregularities. Globally, Asia is highlighted as the fastest‑growing tourism region, with India and China expected to account for over 25% of outbound trips by 2030. Within this broader context, Saudi Arabia stands out for its strategic role in shaping global travel through luxury endeavours, sports tourism, ecotourism, and travel tech investment. Rapid industry expansion demands extensive infrastructure: an additional 7 million hotel rooms, 15 million flights annually, and substantial investments in transport and hospitality—areas where Saudi Arabia is heavily investing. Yet, the WEF report raises red flags: tourism already accounts for approximately 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions and that share could climb to 15% by 2034 if unchecked. Tourist‑derived waste is expected to reach 205 million tonnes annually—about 7% of global solid waste—and acute labour shortages plague countries worldwide, with UK turnover at 53% and US firms struggling with rising wages. WEF President Børge Brende warns of potential losses of up to $6 trillion by 2030 due to inadequate planning and lack of collaboration. He calls for transformative public‑private partnerships and sustainable fuel standards to underpin the sector's future. Kearney's Bob Willen echoes this, highlighting the need for investment in green infrastructure, workforce support, cultural preservation, and community benefit. Saudi Arabia appears poised to lead this shift. Its Vision 2030 agenda is channeling funds into infrastructure, entertainment, and training to support the projected 150 million annual visitors. Initiatives like cinemas, tourism visas, and Quality of Life enhancements are central to this strategy. By aligning mega-projects with sustainability and community inclusion objectives, Riyadh seeks to set an example of responsible tourism transformation.
