Goa temple stampede: CM Pramod Sawant visits injured at hospital, declares govt events cancellation for 3 days
Goa temple incident: Goa CM Pramod Sawant spoke about the temple festival stampede that took place in North Goa village in the wee hours of Saturday, killing at least six persons and 30 injured. He has declared the cancellation of all government programmes for the next 3 days and met injured at the hospital.
He stated that the injured are being treated at the hospital with care and SP North and the Collector and have begun the investigation into the incident.
'Six people died in the stampede and over 50 people have been injured. After getting the information, I went to the spot. The injured are being treated in the hospital...More than 50,000 people participate in the Jatra every year. This is an unfortunate incident,' ANI quoted Sawant as saying.
He said PM Modi called him and enquired about the incident, assuring Centre's assistance. The injured are being treated with care and SP North and the Collector are conducting an investigation of the incident, Sawant mentioned, further declaring that all governments programs have been cancelled for the next 3 days in the state.
'6 people had died before being shifted to hospital. I went to the community health centre where the bodies of 2 have been kept. I visited the district hospital as well, where 10 people are admitted... the rest are being treated at Goa Medical College...one person is in serious condition among them,' he added, according to ANI.
"Saddened by the loss of lives due to a stampede in Shirgao, Goa. Condolences to those who lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon. The local administration is assisting those affected," PM Modi said as per his office.
"At least 30,000 to 40,000 people had gathered for the festival, and some were standing on a slope. A few persons fell on the slope, causing others to fall on each other," PTI quoted the police official as saying. He stated 40 to 50 people fell on the slope, leading to the stampede, which was confined to that spot.

"India has successfully met a peak demand of 250 GW in May 2024 and has transformed from power-deficit to a power-sufficient nation, and as of today, peak demand shortage is zero," he said adding that the growth of the power sector is important for achieving the goal of 'Viksit Bharat' by 2047. The minister said the states should, while meeting their resource adequacy plan, should also work on having adequate power generation mix including addition of nuclear generation capacity. India's peak electricity demand is projected to reach 446 GW by 2034–35, and this sustainably requires proactive planning and continued coordination between the Centre, States, and stakeholders. On the issue of power reliability, Khattar highlighted the importance of cybersecurity and "islanding schemes" to help prevent outages due to cyber threats and to make the power grid more resilient. Calling the distribution sector the most critical link in the power value chain, Khattar said it continues to face major challenges due to poor tariff structures, inefficient billing and collections, and delays in payments by government departments. He said it is important to reduce AT&C (Aggregate Technical and Commercial) losses and the gap between the cost of supply and the revenue collected. He urged states to work with Electricity Regulatory Commissions for cost-reflective tariffs and timely tariff revisions. 'Losses of utilities today add to cost of power for consumers and also deteriorate the delivery of services to consumers, and further, continued losses have a cascading effect,' he said. Khattar also called on distribution companies to speed up work under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme to improve efficiency and smart infrastructure. He said the delay in payment of government dues and subsidies continues to affect the financial health of utilities, with some states still behind on dues from the 2023–24 financial year and wider gaps seen in the current year.

12 Maoists with Rs 1.1 crore bounty surrender before CM in Gadchiroli
Twelve Maoist cadres, collectively carrying a bounty of Rs 1.12 crore, surrendered before Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis during his visit to Gadchiroli on Friday. The CM also flagged off 19 new four-wheelers provided to Gadchiroli Police by the District Planning Committee for anti-Maoist operations.
