After three preseason camp days, Marmion's Dane Pardridge decides to leave NIU for Rutgers. ‘No hard feelings.'

Chicago Tribune07-08-2025
It's been a wild ride over the past few weeks for former Marmion standout Dane Pardridge.
A curious set of circumstances saw Pardridge represent Northern Illinois at a team day and take part in preseason camp before entering the transfer portal and ending up at Rutgers.
Pardridge, a redshirt junior with two years of eligibility remaining, kept it short and sweet.
'I just decided to move on — no hard feelings,' Pardridge said.
He preferred to leave it at that, but the timing does raise some eyebrows.
Pardridge, who was born and raised in DeKalb, participated in the first three days of the Huskies' preseason camp that began on Wednesday, July 30.
He announced over the weekend on X, formerly known as Twitter, that he was entering the transfer portal, then made it official at a Monday meeting with NIU's compliance department.
On Wednesday, Pardridge reposted internet reports on the social media platform that said he had committed to Rutgers, located halfway across the country in New Jersey.
Last Sunday, he anticipated having to move fast.
'I've gotta figure out where I'm going to end up and learn the playbook and, hopefully, adapt quickly,' he said, realizing any team he joined also would have already started its fall camp.
Northern Illinois coach Thomas Hammock sent word through the university's sports information department that he would have no comment on the move.
Pardridge was NIU's leading returning receiver after catching 20 passes for 238 yards last fall. He finished with three touchdowns, scoring the team's first and last TDs of the season as the Huskies (8-5) won the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl 28-20 over Fresno State in double overtime.
Pardridge caught the team's opening TD on a 23-yard pass from senior quarterback Ethan Hampton in a 54-15 win over Western Illinois. Hampton, an Aurora Christian alum, left following the regular season and went to Illinois as a grad transfer.
On top of that, Pardridge scored the winning TD in the bowl game, catching a 25-yard option pass thrown by true freshman receiver George Dimopoulos.
There didn't seem to be any sign that Pardridge and NIU would be parting ways three weeks ago when he was one of six players attending the team's media day preview at Harry Caray's Restaurant in Chicago.
'Dane walked on and our walk-ons have been some of our best players,' said Hammock, who takes pride in developing players. 'They have an edge, a chip on their shoulders.
'I take a lot of pride in the fact that while Dane's dad, Curt, was a tremendous player here at NIU, Dane has made his own mark. I think it was important for him to do that last year.'
Curt Pardridge, who had 64 receptions for 1,074 yards during his career at NIU, also had 483 kick return yards for the 1985 MAC champions. He was selected in the sixth round of the 1986 NFL draft by San Diego, where he played one season.
'Dane is a tremendous returner for us and we feel like he's going to play a big role in our ability to change the field,' Hammock said at Harry Caray's Restaurant.
Pardridge, who had a punt return for a TD against Western Michigan in 2023, seemed excited at the prospect of working with new offensive coordinator Quinn Sanders. He's expected to open up the attack.
'We're going to spread it out a lot more and I think it will upgrade the opportunities,' Pardridge said then. 'I'm looking forward to it. I think we have six guys all competing for that No. 1 spot.'
In a one-on-one interview, Pardridge said he was looking forward to the Huskies' move to the Mountain West next season. At that time, he didn't foresee a chance of him transferring.
'It would have to be a really good deal for me to leave as I love it here so much,' he said. 'It's close to home.'
But with the portal, things change. It has been reported that Pardridge is expected to add depth to Rutgers' receiving corps.

PSG 2-2 (4-3 PKs) Spurs: Champions League winners lift UEFA Super Cup to kick off new season

PSG erased Tottenham Hotspur's 2-0 lead late in the UEFA Super Cup final on Wednesday, equalizing in the 94th minute and then coming from behind again in the penalty shootout. Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero scored Spurs' goal either side of halftime — both from set pieces — and Thomas Frank's debut was off to a roaring start. Spurs didn't have much of the ball (just 26 percent on the night) but they were a constant threat on the counter for about an hour. Meanwhile, PSG had just four shots in the first half, none of which were on target. Pragmatic but practical, and necessary given the current injury situation (again, already). Two of PSG's subs, Kang-In Lee and Goncalo Ramos, scored the goals, in the 85th and 94th. Spurs had the lead early in the shootout as well after Vitinha sent his effort wide of the goal, but Van de Ven was denied by Lucas Chevalier and Tel hooked his wide in rounds 3 and 4. NUNO MENDES WINS IT FOR PSG 💥 — CBS Sports Golazo ⚽️ (@CBSSportsGolazo) August 13, 2025 Tottenham Hotspur, the newest Set Piece FC Frank is at it again, quietly assembling a squad full of big lads that don't have a problem imposing themselves on opponents. And what do you do with such a group of players? Get 'em forward, and get it in the mixer. Micky van de Ven, Kevin Danso, Joao Palhinha, Rodrigo Bentancur and Cristian Romero all stand 6-foot-1 or taller, and it became very clear very quickly that Spurs intended to make good use of them on set pieces. Danso will serve as the long-throw specialist and should feature heavily if Frank persists with the three-man backline, which suits the whole trio very well. Set pieces were a hallmark of Brentford when Frank was in charge there, and it is clear after just one (semi-)competitive game at Spurs that normal service has resumed. The other positive (very closely related) is that Spurs are going to be incredibly annoying to play against this season. They're going to press a lot, they're going to go in for lots of hard challenges, and they're going to score lots of goals from set pieces when you feel they've created nothing otherwise. It was truly fantastic that Ange Postecoglou did what he did and won Tottenham Hotspur its first trophy in nearly two decades, but seeing Spurs so defensively organized, resilient and a little nasty right out of the gate just confirms that Daniel Levy was right to make the change. How did Spurs set up tactically in Thomas Frank's first game? Spurs played with three at the back (Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero and Kevin Danso) and Pedro Porro and Djed Spence provided width over the full length of the pitch. We didn't see any three- or five-man setups from Spurs during preseason and the change was partially forced upon Frank (long-term injuries to James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski), but the Dane decided that the best (and maybe only) place to move the ball forward against PSG was out wide. The midfield trio of Joao Palhinha, Rodrigo Bentancur and Pape Matar Sarr is industrious but hardly creative. Richarlison and Mohammed Kudus were be tasked with running onto through balls in behind and getting on the end of crosses. Spurs were quite dangerous when they pressed, with so many committed and willing workers from front to back. What's next? Chevalier has been brought in just as Champions League hero Gianiluigi Donnarumma looks set to leave the club and likely to land in Manchester. Chevalier is expected to start against Spurs with a virtually unchanged team in front of him. OUT: Senny Mayulu (thigh) Tottenham Hotspur team news, focus Things are looking far less familiar for Tottenham Hotspur, where there is a new manager (Thomas Frank) a new $74-million man (Mohammed Kudus), and another legend of the club has departed (Son Heung-min). There are also a number of injuries (quite familiar, sadly) making matters more difficult for Frank right out of the starting gate. James Maddison is out for most, if not all, of the season after tearing his ACL in preseason; Dejan Kulusevski is still recovering from his patella (knee) fracture back in May; Dominic Solanke hasn't appeared in a preseason game since July 19; and the same since July 26 for Destiny Udogie. Who will provide the creativity? It certainly won't be Yves Bissouma, who was dropped by Frank for being late on a number of occasions this summer, according to the manager. OUT: James Maddison (torn ACL), Dejan Kulusevski (knee), Dominic Solanke (ankle), Destiny Udogie (hamstring) PSG vs Tottenham Hotspur prediction PSG are the better side, the more settled side and the more accomplished side. They also don't have any key injuries to deal with at this point of the season, and they looked sharp at the Club World Cup indicating a strong desire to kick on and win even more this season. PSG 3-1 Tottenham Hotspur.

Inside a Jersey guy's historic ‘Jeopardy!' run — and what he's buying with his winnings

For Scott Riccardi, watching 'Jeopardy!' was a family custom, guessing along with his parents and grandparents. Little did he know he'd go on to put his name in the game show's record books, as one of the winningest 'Jeopardy!' contestants ever. The engineer and Rutgers University graduate began his 16-game winning streak on July 3, earning $455,000 in winnings and securing the No. 8 spot on the regular-season earnings list. His 16 wins earned him a place on the 'Leaderboard of Champions,' tied for tenth with previous winner Ryan Long. In a recent interview with NJ Advance Media, Riccardi, 26, recalled the highs and lows of rewatching his historic run. 'The interview portions are probably the toughest for me to rewatch because you're just so nervous and it's difficult to suddenly have to be yourself for 30 seconds to a minute in the middle of this intense trivia where you're just really trying to focus,' said Riccardi. 'It was really fun to relive all this, considering that I had a hazy memory of exactly how things played out for the most part. It's one of the biggest experiences of your life, but the intensity is so overwhelming that you often find yourself forgetting some of the smaller details.' In terms of strategy, Riccardi stuck to the principles of betting big and answering first. He explained that during the competition, it's a game of timing; hearing the clues and buzzing in, even if the answer didn't come to him immediately. His plan worked for the most part: There were very few points during his streak where Riccardi didn't have the answer or ran out of time on a question. 'I would say a good 80% of the time it's just a sense of me knowing the answer and trying to get in first, hoping to get the rebound if someone else gets it wrong,' said Riccardi. 'I think there are quite a few examples looking back at that run where it feels like there are two really convincing possible answers for something. In many cases, I just waited for someone else to get in and hopefully eliminate one of those wrong choices for me.' Riccardi will be back to compete in the Season 41 Tournament of Champions in January (with an airdate to still be determined). To qualify, a contestant must win five consecutive games during the regular season. In terms of preparation, he is sticking to the plan that got him in the winner's circle 16 times before. 'I'm honestly treating prep for this just the way I was for the regular show,' said Riccardi. 'I'm continuing to work on identifying any blind spots and differentiating between things that are easy to mix up.' What does Riccardi plan to buy with a portion of those winnings? It turns out he's a long-time percussionist, so purchasing a marimba is in his future. 'I've had a few marimba companies message me directly as soon as it was mentioned on the show, which was really surreal,' said Riccardi. The main thing is logistics because they're so big and hard to move around. Once I've got a good space situation figured out for it, it'd be cool to have a nice five-octave marimba and vibraphone while I'm at it.'
