Two Paytm Employees Arrested For Illegally Releasing Rs 30 Lakh From Frozen Accounts
Cops said Chandresh Rathore of Jabalpur and Tariq Anwar of Mau used their access privileges to bypass restrictions on frozen accounts, allowing funds to be withdrawn unlawfully
Noida Police have arrested two employees of Paytm Payments Bank for allegedly releasing nearly Rs 30 lakh from accounts that were frozen due to their suspected involvement in fraudulent activities. The arrests were made after an internal investigation revealed unauthorised transactions carried out by the accused staff members.
According to police officials, the employees— Chandresh Rathore of Jabalpur and Tariq Anwar of Mau—used their access privileges to bypass restrictions on frozen accounts, allowing funds to be withdrawn unlawfully.
The Times of India reported that the accused acted under the direction of an intermediary who communicated with the owners of several frozen accounts—likely individuals under investigation for various cyber fraud cases. These account holders reportedly paid the accused to unlock their accounts and release the funds.

The illegal transactions were detected during routine audits conducted by the company's fraud-prevention team, which immediately alerted law enforcement agencies.
The two staffers, who were part of Paytm's operations team, reportedly manipulated the system to facilitate the transfer of funds without following proper verification protocols. This breach raised serious concerns about the security and integrity of Paytm's financial operations.
Police are investigating whether the released funds were linked to larger financial scams or money laundering activities. The arrested employees have been taken into custody for further questioning, and authorities are scrutinising their communication and transaction records to identify possible accomplices.
Senior police officer Vivek Ranjan Rai was quoted as saying by NDTV that the accused 'helped cyber criminals this way for several years before getting caught". Another officer said more employees of the company could be involved in the scam.
Paytm has expressed its cooperation with the investigation and reiterated its commitment to stringent security measures to prevent such incidents. The company emphasised that it is taking steps to strengthen internal controls and protect customer assets from fraud.

Infrastructure lapses exposed: Drowning in drain sparks demand for safety steps
Gurgaon: The worst fears of residents came true when body of a 22-year-old man, who had been missing for three days, was found in an under-construction drain along Hamilton Court Road. The incident sparked outrage among locals and highlighted the safety gaps on sites of ongoing civic projects in city. GMDA is carrying out a project to renovate the stretch at a cost of Rs 21 crore. It was undertaken by the authority in Feb 2024 and was to be completed within 12 months, but only 50% of the work has been completed. Meanwhile, residents have been complaining for months about the poor condition of the stretch, pointing to uncovered drains, lack of proper barricading, and inadequate lighting. Despite several reminders to GMDA, no corrective measures were taken, they said. You Can Also Check: Gurgaon AQI | Weather in Gurgaon | Bank Holidays in Gurgaon | Public Holidays in Gurgaon "It is a dangerous stretch—cars get stuck here often. A few weeks ago, a cow was found trapped in a drain pit here. There is no space left for pedestrians. The work is being executed in a shoddy manner, with no proper planning. The road was revamped with a footpath ahead of the G20 summit in 2023, and then they started tearing it up again in 2024," said Col Pravin Uberoi (retd), a resident of Sushant Lok-1. "There is no barricading or signages on the stretch and streetlights malfunction frequently. We have been facing these issues for the last one-and-a-half years," Uberoi added. The recent incident of drowning at the site has intensified demands for a safety audit and strict accountability from the authorities, with many residents saying the tragedy could have been averted. "There is absolutely no monitoring of the stretch. They dug up everything and left it unattended. The contractor has also damaged sewer and electricity lines during digging. If someone is killed due to negligence, those responsible should be held accountable. Until accountability is fixed, such tragedies will keep happening," Anil Kapoor, another resident, said. Meanwhile, a GMDA official said safety protocols were part of every contract they signed. "They are mentioned in the agreement we sign with the agency. All terms and conditions regarding pollution mitigation and safety measures are clearly stated in the contract. While some safety measures were taken, they were not fully implemented," he said. The official added that instructions had been issued to all field officers to ensure that contractors strictly followed safety protocols. Reacting to the police notice served to GMDA in the case, the official said, "It's an ongoing investigation. We have responded to the notice."

CID to register case in the Kanke land scam
1 2 Ranchi: Police headquarters instructed the criminal investigation department (CID) to take over the case related to land scam involving hundreds of acres in Kanke block of Ranchi district. The scam is related to illegal transaction of tribal and gair mazirwa land by changing their nature. The role of land mafias, along with the employees of Kanke circle office and the National Informatics Centre (NIC), is under scanner in this connection. Director general of police (DGP) Anurag Gupta said, "I directed the CID to identify the persons, who manipulated the land records at the CO office and the NIC to alter the nature of land. The CID has also been urged to identify the beneficiaries, including land mafias and other big players." Police headquarters asked the CO office and the NIC to provide details of land records. The changes in nature of land have been made with and without the signature of CO officers. The involvement of NIC staffs is likely in cases where modifications are without signatures, sources said. Earlier, Jharkhand police had registered a case in this connection with Kanke police station and a special team under deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Amar Kumar Pandey started the investigation. Former Kanke CO staff Praveen Kumar Agrawal was arrested. Agrawal is an approver in the case for the Directorate of Enforcement (ED), which is investigating the case from money laundering point of view. The ED had on June 6 raided the Chandini Chowk-based flat of land mafia Kamlesh Kumar and seized Rs 1 crore in cash and 100 cartridges. Kamlesh was arrested on charges of attempting to occupy a Kanke-based land owned by a tribal in October 2021. On July 27, the ED interacted with villagers in Kanke after receiving complaints from them that land mafias have captured large areas, including tribal assets by changing nature of land and use of money and force. A villager, Parnu Oroan, alleged that people had lodged complaints with the local police station and the CO but the steps did not yield any result.

Nearly 2 years after mob attack onmosque, bail for last of 9 accused
Gurgaon: A city court this week granted bail to a 22-year-old man who was accused in a case related to a mob attack on a Sector 57 mosque in the aftermath of the 2023 Nuh riots. Sukhral alias Kapil alias Kubda (22), a resident of Bandhwari, is the last of the nine accused to be granted bail in the case. On July 31, 2023, after days of threats posted online by people from two communities, violence broke out during the Brijmandal Jalabhishek Yatra as the procession was crossing Nuh and came under attack from an armed mob. Hours after the violence in Nuh, an armed mob of around 90-100 surrounded Anjuman Mosque in Sector 57 and laid siege to it in the early hours of Aug 1. A police team deployed at the spot tried to stop the mob but came under fire. Within a few minutes, the mob had entered the mosque and set it on fire. The mosque's naib imam Mohd Saad, assaulted and critically injured in the attack, died while still on his way to the hospital. Another man, Khurshid Alam, sustained a bullet injury to his leg. Kapil's counsel Manish Shandilya argued during the hearings that the 22-year-old was implicated in the disclosure statement of other accused. "No recovery is pending. The chargesheet has been filed. No custodial interrogation is required. He has been falsely named in this FIR," Shandilya told the court. Public prosecutor Sumit Saini argued that though Kapil's name was not initially mentioned in the FIR, it was initially disclosed by the other accused. "The weapons used in the commission of the offence have been recovered from the accused," he said. Additional sessions judge Puneet Sehgal in the July 16 order observed that keeping the accused in custody without justification would infringe on his fundamental rights. "So, after considering the facts and circumstances of the case and without commenting on the merits of the case, this court deems it appropriate to grant the concession of bail to the applicants-accused," the order read. Kapil was granted bail on the condition that he pays a bond of Rs 1 lakh. Four other accused in the case – Naveen, Rakesh alias Bhola, Aakash and Naveen – are out on bail granted by the local court. Three more persons , Satpal, Ravinder and Rahul, were granted bail by Punjab and Haryana high court in July 2024.
