Thunderstorm warning issued for southwest Simcoe, Dufferin counties

Communities in the southwestern part of Simcoe County and across Dufferin County are under a thunderstorm warning for Wednesday evening.
According to Environment Canada, meteorologists are tracking a line of severe thunderstorms capable of producing strong wind gusts.
The weather agency states that the storms are spanning from Shelburne to Grand Valley and moving east at 70 kilometres per hour.
The areas that could be impacted span as far southwest as the towns of Orangeville and Caledon and as far northeast as Innisfil.
Environmental Canada adds that local utility outages are likely, as well as damage to roofs, fences, soft shelters or trees.
Residents are urged to take immediate cover if a thunderstorm approaches and to seek protection from flying debris and hail.

Much of Ontario remains under special air quality statements or warnings today amid smoke from wildfires burning in other parts of Canada. Air quality warnings Environment Canada issued on Thursday for parts of northern Ontario remain in place today as wildfires scorch Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, with heavy smoke causing poor air quality and reduced visibility. The agency says regions including Kenora, Fort Hope and Sandy Lake could see extremely high levels of air pollution for several days, but smoke is expected to become more localized as of Saturday evening. It says parts of central and eastern Ontario, including the Muskoka region and Ottawa, are under a special air quality statement due to the smoke, adding conditions should gradually improve today. Much of southern Ontario was under an air quality statement on Thursday and Friday that lifted early Saturday morning. Swiss air quality tracker IQAir marked air quality in Toronto and Montreal among the worst in the world as of Saturday morning. ‘Showering so much': Indigenous students from water crisis-stricken village enjoy abundance on Montreal trip
A state of emergency over a water crisis in Puvirnituq, on the Northeast coast of Hudson Bay ended today, but the issues that slowed the availability of running water to the Inuit village linger. Temporary solutions are in place but the pipe that froze, cutting off water to the community of 2,000 people, won't be replaced until the fall. The school year was cut short but some of the students from the local high school are in Montreal for a six-day trip to learn but to also heal from the difficult three months they have just lived through. 'It was really hard, I couldn't take any showers, and I had to go to school to brush my teeth because there was water there sometimes,' said 13-year-old Nevie Cadot. 'It was really bad.' Today, Cadot was splashing around in the backyard pool of the home where the seven students and three teachers are staying during their visit. Some of the other students along with their Inuktitut teacher, Lisi Alasuak, were sitting by the side of the pool. They have toured the Montreal Science Centre, and the Insectarium, and a shopping centre. They are also enjoying abundant water, something they have missed at home in the North. 'I have been using a lot of water,' said student Annie Joy Irqu with a smile. 'I am showering so much.' The water crisis in their Inuit village broke out in mid-March. A protection mechanism on a pipeline connecting the pump station to the water treatment plant 2.5 kilometres away broke, causing the pipe to freeze. Water had to be trucked in and sewage trucked out. But that reduced the supply to a trickle as blizzards repeatedly made roads impassable. Hospital ran out of water and gastrointestinal diseases spiked as hygiene became a major issue. 'People had to melt ice from outside to flush the toilet,' says Alasuak. Puvirnituq declared a state of emergency after firefighters struggled to put out a house fire and Canadian Rangers were called to help distribute bottled water and provide logistical support to the community. In mid-May, a temporary pipeline, resembling a hose lying on top of the remaining snow, was installed. But the town had to issue a warning for people not to pass over the exposed pipeline with snowmobiles after it was severed and had to be repaired. For years, provincial and federal governments have promised to improve the availability of running water in communities in the North. But this crisis has renewed calls for more resources being invested in basic needs. The students offered a few suggestions of what they would ask if they could talk to politicians. 'I would ask for pipes deep underground for unlimited water,' says Cadot. 'But also, for better roads. The roads are really bad and bumpy, and the water trucks had a hard time getting through.' For now, the students are enjoying being teens on a school trip spending a few days away from home.

Poor air quality, moderate risk level still affecting Ottawa-Gatineau
The Ottawa-Gatineau region is still experiencing poor air quality from drifting wildfire smoke, prompting Environment Canada to maintain its special air quality statements into Saturday. The agency issued the statements for most of the region on Friday as of 7 a.m., which spread to blanket all of eastern Ontario and western Quebec. As of 9 a.m. Saturday, Kingston, Ont. and the surrounding area had its special air quality statement lifted, but the statement is still in place in Ontario as far south as Smith's Falls and stretching east all the way to the Georgian Bay. In western Quebec, the statement stretches east along the Quebec-U.S. border and north stopping short of Val-d'Or. The Air Quality Health Index for downtown Ottawa was six, or moderate risk, on Saturday as of 9 a.m. On Friday, it had risen to the highest level which Environment Canada issues (10+, or very high). Saturday morning's index for other eastern Ontario communities were, as of 9 a.m.: Four, or moderate risk, in Kingston. Five, or moderate risk, in Belleville. Five, or moderate risk, in Cornwall. The smoke may pose health risks, Environment Canada said, advising people in affected areas to limit time outdoors and to consider rescheduling outdoor activities. The Eastern Ontario Health Unit also warned of health risks and advised residents to watch for symptoms including: Eye, nose and throat irritation. Coughing. Headaches. Dizziness. Chest pains. Difficulty breathing. Both agencies said people over 65, pregnant people, children, people with pre-existing health conditions and people who work outdoors are more likely to be impacted by air pollution. Wildfires are raging across Western Canada, with B.C, Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan all battling blazes. Air quality warnings were issued from the Alberta-B.C. border into Labrador as of Friday morning and largely remain in place as of 9 a.m. Saturday.
